Elle was always the good girl who did exactly what everyone expected of her. But that is beginning to get old for Elle and she is looking to break free. I liked Elle. She made some bad choices and I didn’t agree with some of her decisions, but I still liked her. She just felt stuck and while none of her problems may seem monumental, I still saw how she felt like she had no choice. It may not be rational, but she just needed to find herself. Her Dad controlled her entire life and it’s hard for her to finally take that control, but I was proud of her when she did.
Then we have Cole and I loooooooved Cole. I fell hard for him. He is tough and rugged but also sweet. He is a bad boy with a good heart and I absolutely loved that about him. But boy, when he got upset did he get upset. Some of the things he said out of anger made me so mad at him, but that’s Cole. It doesn’t excuse anything, but he feels everything and he feels it with everything he has.
I’m not gonna lie. The cheating aspect was not something I approved of, but I’m not one of those readers who absolutely hates it in book. I accept it as fiction and go along with the story. I didn’t like what Cole and Elle did to Logan behind his back, but I also didn’t hate them for it. Elle just didn’t want to hurt anyone and neither Cole nor Elle expected one another. So I don’t approve of it, but I could understand their decisions and I was 100% rooting for Cole and Elle to make it work.
Up In Flames brought all of the swoon and schmexy times and I ate them up. The feels were strong with this one. My heart was ripped to shreds multiple times because I cared so much for these characters. No one does feels and romance like Nicole.
Up In Flames was a great read and another wonderful book from Nicole. A great romance, not to be missed.
Elle lives in a small town, the daughter of a widowed father, who spent her time being whatever either he or her boyfriend wanted her to be. While I found her boyfriend and dad to be condescending and controlling at times, the truth is, they seemed to want to do what they thought was best for Elle, or what they thought she wanted. Further, she never stood up for herself and told them she didn't like how she was treated (or that she didn't actually like tea!). Elle basically coasted through life, accepting that she was destined to "settle."
However, Elle isn't really as accepting of her life as she seems to want to be. She blows off steam by small acts of rebellion, like skinny dipping in her grandma's lake. Enter Cole. Oh Cole. Cole is a smokejumper who spends his summers following and fighting fires. Cole lives life to its fullest- as if he won't make it another day. No regrets. No roots. Definitely no settling down. That is, until Cole meets Elle.
The tension between these two is hot. Elle is a good girl, who doesn't want to hurt her boyfriend who she cares about, or lose the comfortable life she has planned for her future, but she can't seem to stay away from Cole. Cole doesn't want a relationship or to settle down in one place, but likewise, he can't seem to stay away from Elle.
Nicole Williams does an amazing job of developing these characters and showing their flaws, making their relationship all the more relatable. While you really want the two to get together, you can understand the hesitation Elle has to giving up everything she thought would be her future. On the other hand, you can understand how vulnerable Cole feels and how quickly he is to freak out about putting himself out there. If I had anything to criticize, it would be Elle's quickness to forgive Cole's reactions to her (in)actions. But, the truth is, I don't really care because I just really wanted these two to have their happily ever after. Also, her father's quick come around to Elle standing up for herself and dumping of her long term boyfriend for a guy she met like 2 weeks before... well again it may be kind of unbelievable, but again, I don't really care. I guess this story line could have been explored a little more. That's why I'm giving this story 4 stars instead of 5.
In the end, I really loved this story. The tension was hot, the characters were relatable and flawed and the story was as much about these two finding themselves as it was about them finding each other. Can't wait to read more by this author.
This was a really good read. The characters are very relate able and the romance is swoon worthy. This is definitely a new adult book, because there are some very steamy love scenes in here.
