I enjoyed this book immensely. In style of coziness and characterization, with the elements of Church of England doings combined with women's pants suits, a vicar's wife who is a former reporter and amateur detective, and the use of cell phones, it crosses a century of detective fiction and ties them together seamlessly.
Leach is a writer I want to read more of.
Recommended for readers of good clean mysteries.

Love Agatha Christie? If so, you won't want to miss Marilyn Leach’s second Berdie Elliott mystery. I enjoyed my return to St. Aidan of the Wood parish and seeing what was happening with its inhabitants, including the intrepid vicar’s wife and her sleuthing companion. Life is never simple for them. As if that weren’t enough, the author’s use of British idiom gives the story an authentic feel that enhances this cozy mystery.

Up From the Grave is not the first book I read of Marilyn Leach. She did not disappoint me with this one either. She continues with her tradition of cozy British mysteries. Berdie Elliot is the vivar's wife and the main crime solver of the books. This book revolves around a skeleton that is found in the parish garden that was found when digging for a fountain. Berdie and her friend Lillie embark on an investigation to solve the mystery. There will be danger, murder, conflict, humor and romance. I can not wait to read more of Berdie's adventures!

The plot has its moments, but the poor writing and lack of proofreading distract from the plot. It is very clear that the author is not English, and some of her use of British words isn't quite genuine. I also doubt that she has had much experience of vicarage life. A good British editor would be a big help.

I found this book thoroughly enjoyable and read it in about a day. I had a hard time putting it down. I don't deliberately choose Christian literature, and though Christianity played a big part in the story, it wasn't overwhelming for a reader like myself. The mystery is set in a small village in England and revolves around the Vicar, his wife, Berdie, her friends, and their fellow villagers. There was actually a mystery within a mystery, and I was kept guessing until the very end as Berdie did her sleuthing to discover the identity of a child's bones uncovered in the church garden. I enjoyed the author's development of the characters and their relationships with each other in the context of a small village where everyone knows everyone. I felt as if I knew every one of them personally, and felt I could be good friends with quite a few of them. I would recommend this book with enthusiasm as a light, fun read, and look forward to reading other books by Ms. Leach.

GOD takes you up from the grave

This book is jovial yet practical, adventurous yet grounded, amusing yet chilling, knowledgeable yet ignorant, joyous yet solemn and romantic yet alone - lonely, but with GOD all of this is brought together and HE resolves it all and takes care of it all and resolves it. This is a story of a vicar's wife who, when they found a skeleton when they moved the ground for the church's fountain. She takes it upon herself to figure out who it is - why it is there and how it got there - This book keeps you guessing - it really does - I know they all say that - but this really does - GOD is in the book - that is what is important for me - you cannot go wrong when GOD is involved - the vicar's wife's friend helps her - and there are hijinks and serious times - this is a book of dichotomies and you will love every minute of it - and who it is will surprise you.. I rreceived a copy of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.

English cozy mystery

I am a cozy mystery addict and found this one delightful. It is set in a village in England that can’t help but remind the reader of Agatha Christie’s St. Mary’s Meade. Both are populated by an assortment of characters with both peculiar behaviors and quirky personalities. However, rather than an elderly spinster like Miss Marple to solve the mystery, Marilyn Leach presents Berdie- spunky, lively, the happily-married vicar’s wife who takes her church duties and her sleuthing equally seriously. With her love-challenged sidekick, Lillie, she uses her skills as a former investigative reporter and her “gift of setting things to rights for the benefit of all” to observe, question and deduce as she goes about daily village life. As in St. Mary’s Meade, there is a lot more going on than just what appears on the surface, and the discovery of bones in the church’s garden brings several smoldering situations to the light of day. I enjoyed the relatationship between Berdie and her husband and her wise, prayerful counsel. Great intricate mystery with very likeable protagonists. This is obviously not Berdie’s first adventure so I am eager to read any more I can find. I received this book through the Book Club Network in exchange for this my honest opinion.

Once again we have an American writer setting her story in an English village. Ms Leach credits her English friends with giving her an appreciation of English culture. Why, therefore does she make so many errors like calling shopping bags "marketing bags" etc etc? I see that this was first published in paperback. I wonder if errors such as palette for palate and other similar mistakes appeared in that edition, they certainly do here and become increasingly irritating the more they appear.
The premise of the mystery is clever and some of the characters are well drawn but I felt that it was slightly over written and could have done with some judicious editing, particularly when it comes to the over use of adjectives eg almost every room is described as "gracious" and almost every verb has an adverb attached to it.The conversational style appears to date from the era of Jane Austen and not from the modern era so it appears stilted at times.
It whiled away an hour or two but is not one of the best I have read
