Product Description
Know your breast milk supply is ready! Breastfeeding moms can celebrate with peace of mind in 2 minutes. UpSpring MilkScreen’s breast milk test strips for alcohol have been trusted by moms for over 10 years. MilkScreen test strips detect alcohol in breast milk, even at low levels, so you can feel reassured knowing your breast milk is ready for your baby. EASY, FAST, ACCURATE - Just saturate the MilkScreen alcohol test strips with breast milk. If the test pad changes color at 2 minutes, alcohol is present (at or above 13.1 mg/dL). No more guessing. FSA/HSA approved. The pack includes 20 individually wrapped disposable test strips and instruction guide. While the overall recommendations (by AAP, World Health Organization (WHO), and others) are to avoid alcohol, a small or standard drink is considered acceptable, and breastfeeding should be avoided for at least 2 hours after consumption. The reason is that alcohol is metabolized and eliminated from the blood and breast over time. As a result, it is not recommended to pump and dump the milk, but rather wait before the next feeding if possible. No two women metabolize alcohol at the same rate. There are many factors that affect the metabolism of alcohol, such as body weight, the type and amount of alcohol you drink, and how much and when you've last eaten. UpSpring MilkScreen test strips will help you feel reassured knowing your breast milk is ready for baby. More fun. Less worry. UpSpring is here to support your long breastfeeding journey and we do not want you to stop due to a celebratory occasion. PROUDLY MADE IN THE USA. Don't settle for substitutes. At UpSpring, we nurture the nurturers. So, you will feel cared for too. All our wellness solutions are made with love and backed by science. This product is not intended to be used in the prevention, diagnosis or treatment of alcohol intoxication or poisoning or other health-related conditions in women or nursing babies.
From the Manufacturer
In just two minutes, milkscreen quickly and accurately analyzes breast milk for alcohol. Every mother is unique so, naturally, the way our bodies metabolize alcohol is unique, too. Metabolizing alcohol depends on several factors including body weight, type of alcohol consumed, and food intake so milkscreen was created to eliminate those variables. milkscreen also helps ensure that the alcohol concentrated in Moms breast milk is not at a level that may have negative impacts on Baby. Studies have shown infants consuming breast milk with alcohol concentrations at approximately 30mg/dl, or 0.03%, and higher have exhibited distinctive changes in feeding behavior and sleep. Babies consume less if the milk contains alcohol and they also sleep less and wake more frequently. We have set the milkscreen test to show a color change at 0.02% to help Mom stay within recommended feeding guidelines.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2016Size: 20 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseEveryone does metabolize alcohol differently, and we all have different philosophies as to whether these things work and if we can trust them. For me, these test strips work consistently with how I have been drinking and how my body feels at the moment of the test.
How it worked for me:
- 2.5 glasses of wine (about 18 oz) drunken evenly over 1.5 hours (had some cheese and nuts); tested an hour after the last sip - test pad turned light yellow.
- 1 glass of wine (about 7 oz) drunken evenly over 1 hour; tested an hour after the last sip - all clean.
- 2 glasses of wine (about 15 oz) drunken evenly over 1 hour; tested immediately after - test pad turned brown.
- 3 glasses of wine (about 24 oz) from 9:30pm-11:30pm; 1 mixed drink around 12:30am; half a shot around 2am; half a shot around 2:30am. Tested breastmilk around 7:30am - test pad showed scattered brownness; tested again around 10am - all clean.
A few things to look out for:
- A negative result does not mean that you have no alcohol in your blood/breastmilk; it only means that you have less than 13.1mg/dL of alcohol in your blood.
- Read the result at exactly 2 minutes after you saturate the test pad. The result will be very different and invalid if you read it after 2 minutes, say an hour later. For example, one time the test pad turned brown when I was drinking wine, but the same test pad returned to its initial color after half a day.
- Either expressing breastmilk onto test pad or saturating test pad in breastmilk will work, but if you choose the former, make sure your breastmilk cover the whole pad; 3-5 drops should work.
- The instruction says ANY color change on the test pad indicates more than 13.1mg/dL alcohol in blood, but it didn't say whether a darker color indicates a higher level of alcohol in blood. However, personally, I observed that when I drank more and tested sooner, the test pad turned to a darker color. It could be coincidence, but just something for you to consider.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2023Size: 20 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI knew there should be a way to know if my milk had alcohol or not!! I feel moms are expected to become something no one is: perfect. And drink alcohol while breastfeeding is one of the most criticized actions, right? Well, this little things helped me and my husband to be more open to the possibility of me having a drink or two (of course never got drunk) and also keep feeding my baby as I pumped since baby was born. They get dark almost on the spot if milk has alcohol and will be the same color as they originally are when it doesn’t. I did a try one day I didn’t drink at all and they didn’t change and, the day I had 3 drinks, I pumped right after dinner and the strips got brown: I threw that milk; I drank water (like regularly) and, next time I pumped the strips were “white” so I saved that milk for my baby. I wish they said this existed the moment my baby was born and I think every woman needs to know this and spread the word!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2022Size: 20 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI’ve had these on hand for a few months and was always a little skeptical of their accuracy. I’ve enjoyed an occasional drink or two but have always followed it up with plenty of water and waiting 2+ hours to pump and the test always comes back negative. Well the hubby and I were finally able to take our first weekend getaway (we have a three month old) and I let myself enjoy a few more drinks than I usually do. The first test strip was at 1pm or about 3 hours after having a couple of mimosas with breakfast. I continued to have 3 more drinks in the early afternoon and pumped/tested again at 4pm and that was the second strip. Now I stopped drinking at 4pm and pumped/tested at 7:30pm and that was the third positive strip. My last pump of the night was at 11pm (about 7 hours after I stopped drinking) and I was finally able to see a negative strip. I still dumped this milk out of an abundance of caution but I will say that having these test strips really eased my mind. They helped me enjoy my vacation and made me feel confident knowing when I can safely feed my baby. The final test strip was taken around 6am the next morning (an obvious negative) and is there for comparison. I will always have these on hand so long as I am pumping for my baby!

- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2024Size: 20 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseThese test strips give new moms like me, the reassurance needed when we do happen to drink. The strips are super easy to use, and you get results quickly. This saves me from any “pump and dumps” of precious milk!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022Size: 20 Count (Pack of 1)Verified PurchaseI was a little unsure about these when I bought them and first tried them. I don’t drink that often or when I do I don’t drink that much. But I’ve got a vacation coming up and I know I’ll have one good night with some drinking. 😬 So I want to be sure I’m not passing any alcohol through my breast milk to my baby. I tried these out a couple times before my vacation to see if they really worked.
One day I had 2 glasses of wine and tried a test strip 2 hours after drinking and it came up negative. Another time I had a couple of those flavored alcoholic seltzers. Came up negative.
Last week (no judgement- it was my first week back to work, working from home with an infant - it was stressful!) I had a glass of wine, 2 shots of vodka and 2 wine coolers after baby went to bed. I started drinking at 7pm and tested my milk at 11pm and it was clearly positive. So I pumped and dumped. I tested again before I fed by baby at 2am and the test was negative.
I’m sure it also depends on your body size, how often you drink, etc. I asked my Obgyn if I could have an occasional drink while breastfeeding and asked if i had to pump and dump. My obgyn told me as long as I wasn’t drunk I could breastfeed. I didn’t like that at all because i have a high alcohol tolerance. I wanted a more definitive answer. Obviously the best answer for peace of mind is to never drink while breastfeeding. But let’s be honest. It’s 2022. Life is rough. This solo mom needs an occasional fun night! Really happy with these! Takes the guessing out of things.
