I like the solid construction and sleek design. This is a kitchen tool that will last a long time.
The one problem, and why I have given it 4 stars rather than 5, is that the manufacturer has used an inferior grade of stainless steel, probably 18/0, and it has not taken long for corrosion to start appearing. Better stainless steel is 18/10 -- that means the alloy includes 18% chromium and 10% nickel. While no stainless steel is truly stainless, the inclusion of nickel makes a great difference, but adds to the cost so many manufacturers stick with the less expensive 18/0. I will try to post a photo showing the corrosion.
Despite the corrosion, after having used this for 6 months I am pleased with my purchase. I would encourage others to search for another cracker made of better quality steel, but since it seems difficult to know in advance what grade of steel one would be buying, this may well be the best you will find.
While the key feature I always look for in a cracker is the ability to make short work of the thinner legs of the smaller crustaceans, this has additional features that I love. First is the engineering.
The fulcrum is designed to effortlessly crack shells in a controlled manner. What I mean by this is you can exert a measured pressure, starting with a low squeezing pressure and increase it in small steps until larger shells crack. Some crackers are all or nothing - you need to exert maximum pressure with no finesse or graduations. That approach usually results in shell and meat splattering when the shell is cracked. It also is because of poor design that places the fulcrum in the wrong place. This one is vastly superior to most designs in that respect.
Another advantage, which is mentioned in ChuckH's March 13, 2013 review, is the material. This does not have a cheap, clad plating that could contaminate your meal. It's stainless steel that is relatively easy to care for and will provide a long life if you do so properly. I personally hand wash mine and immediately wipe it dry. I do that for all stainless steel cook and serving ware.
If you consume crab or lobster more than occasionally this is a cracker you should consider because it's well designed and constructed. It's made for frequent use.
