Knight hooked me into the story quickly by jumping right into the action. I particularly enjoyed the author’s handling of the sex scenes; they were drawn out for maximum pleasure, incredibly detailed, and really built up my anticipation right alongside Tad and Scott’s growing anticipation for each other. There were both tender and sexy moments and the chemistry between the two was pretty incendiary.
Despite the hot and explicit sex scenes, both Tad and Scott have very strong voices and are pretty well developed. Scott was adorable in his sweet pursuit of Tad, despite being the “dominant” and experienced one. His willingness to make himself vulnerable to forge a connection with Tad was endearing and tugged on my heartstrings. I love to see characters that turn stereotypes on their head and I think Scott does that.
That, coupled with Tad’s inner conflict about getting physically and emotionally involved with Scott really brought more depth to the book than I anticipated. This wasn’t all sex and no substance mixed in with some instalove. Tad has to reconcile what he’s feeling emotionally with what he’s feeling physically. This added just enough angst to keep things engaging but not so much that I felt slightly depressed and emotionally drained after reading.
Now I’m not intimately acquainted with the BDSM community or lifestyle, but I have read many books with this theme. I felt very comfortable with how consent was addressed and represented in this book and that hasn’t been the case with a lot of others that I’ve read. The circumstance under which Tad meets Scott would be questionable in the real world but it worked for me as a plot device (cause this is fiction after all) and I think the author did a solid job of addressing that situation later on.
On the whole, the end of the book came too fast for me and this quickly became something that I read over and over.
Books 1-3 start out with a very hard core erotic story. Tad just ends up on the losing end of poker game. At this point, his ‘debt’ is paid to alpha male hottie Scott. Let’s just say – there is no ‘safe’ way to properly summarize the story. In Book 2, the reader is introduced to the mental journey Tad needs to make. He is confused; it’s obvious he thinks his behavior should conform to what is ‘normal’. However another super-hot encounter with Scott leaves Tad (and the reader) aching. Book 3, Tad is coming to grips with his ‘new’ reality courtesy of another wild-hanging out with Scott.
My thoughts focus on the fact that Tad's a college age student. At that time in his life all readers can relate to not knowing who you want to be. Whether personally, professionally or sexually. Tad seems to be dealing with two of the three. "But this? This kind of intimacy was gunning for something else". That's where the book took a turn for me from highly eroticism to erotic contemporary romance. You get to be introduced with their struggle to figure this new relationship that isn't going to be purely sexual as presented in book one. I have to hand it to Scott's character. He recognized Tad was struggling. I am not sure I would have been as patient with Tad as Scott.
Why the .5 star deduction? I've got to be fair in all my genres and there was just one stumbling point for me. Tad was toweling off then suddenly at his jeep. I had to re-read the passage twice to make sure I wasn't just tired. ( This is a weird pet peeve of mine when reading. I need clean transition. So there you have it) So, yes, out of all the pages this is my one minor thing I have take away from a perfect read for me.
If you love a great erotic story where you can see characters change and evolve with light your pants on fire scenes, this is it. I liked it so very much I'm definitely finishing the series and new fan of the author.
