Editorial Reviews

In a perfect world, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' breakthrough album wouldn't have been 1989's Mother's Milk, but 1987's The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, and the history of this groundbreaking rock/ rap band (and likely the entire subgenre it created) would've been drastically changed. Veterans Anthony Kiedis (vocals) and Flea (bass) had welcomed back original guitarist Hillel Slovak for the preceding Freaky Styley album, doing the same at this point for original drummer Jack Irons, who replaced Cliff Martinez. The energy of having these four friends from Los Angeles back together jumps out of the opening anthem "Fight Like a Brave" and the experimental "Funky Crime"; tracks like the autobiographical "Me & My Friends" and closing "Organic Anti-Beat Box Band" would stay in the group's live repertoire for the next decade or more. Kiedis' barking rap delivery drives the cover of Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues," and Flea's ahead-of-their-time slapping basslines stand out in "Behind the Sun" and "Walkin' on Down the Road," but Slovak and Irons brought things to the Chili Peppers that no one else ever has. The drummer's pounding funk backbeats left a blueprint for his successor, Chad Smith, and the manic intro to "Skinny Sweaty Man" sounds like Buddy Rich playing James Brown material. Slovak is at the height of his powers on the rap-rock reggae "Love Trilogy" and funky "Special Secret Song Inside," which gained some notoriety for it's anatomical undertones. But Slovak would die of a heroin overdose the following year, with Irons quitting the band afterward from the depression of the loss, leaving Kiedis and Flea to wonder what might have been.

Great CD. Great Price. Advertised as used, but appears to have never been played. Have never had any issues with the music that we purchase through Amazon.

This was the first RHCP album I ever heard back in 1990-1991?. Found it in a library and took it home for a listen- blew me away! Been a fan since. Purchased Mother's mil when it first came out and saw them in Boston for that tour. Haven't listened to this for more than a decade when I decided to purchase the CD- had an old cassette copy that just doesn't sound so good. The remastered CD sounds great! Very nice new liner notes from Flea on the band at the time of the recording. I forgot how much I liked Hillel's playing (RIP Slim). Him and Flea are monsters on this record. Truly their funkiest record. Sad to think what they could have done if Hillel lived on. Behind the Sun is still one if not my favorite RHCPs song. Just makes me so happy every time I hear it! The first 6 songs on this album make you feel like your being shot out of a cannon. If you don't have this in your RHCP collection get it- you won't be disappointed. The album is truly a Party through and throughout.

I just got into the peppers back in 2012, and got all the modern stuff from , Blood Sugar Sex Magik to I'm With you, and recently was discovering there funky stuff back from the 80s. This album has some amazing stuff, from my favorite on the album Behind the sun i love the music video and the song itself it reminds me of growing up back in the 90s, with the music video looking like something out of gullah gullah island! But back to the album, this was the only album recorded with the original lineup, seeing how Hillel Slovak would die and Jack Irons would leave the band not wanting to go on with the death of his friends. Before that Irons was in another band, and Hillel Slovak wasn't on the first album. This has some great funk rock to it, and is worth it! While not as great as mothers milk its still a great album with my favorite tracks behind the sun, Fight like a brave, Me & My friends and the cover of the bob dylan song Subterranean Homesick Blues. I'd recommend this to people who are fans of the chili peppers 80s stuff, no the alternative rock style they have gone since 1999.

I've always been partial toward the Hillel Slovak era Chili Pepper albums. This one is my third favorite from RHCP, behind Freaky Styley and Blood Sugar. My only complaint is the drummer doesn't play with any dynamics on this record. Otherwise, the album is great.

This came out before any of the super big albums. So, if you are looking for older RHCP, this is my favorite in that category.

This is the only RHCP album that features the original line-up formed while they were in high school. The sound you'll find here you cant get on any other album. With songs like "backwoods", "Me and My Friends", "No Chump Love Sucker" and "The Love trilogy" this CD hits hard and will leave you wanting more of this lineup that sadly would never be again.

I bought vinyl. Its is heavy gauge vinyl very flat with no warps or other problems. Sound level and quality is great. Highly recommend and in my opinion possibly their best album. (although they are all excellent)

This is where the Peppers found their sound. Funk and Roll.. hard rocking with their socks out... songs like "Funky Crime", "Backwoods" and "Love Trilogy" are the backbone of the Peppers.. "Behind the Sun" was a taste of what was still to come..
