"Nothing gets one's attention like one's imminent demise," writes Gene O'Neil in An Upraised Chalice, a book that chronicles the remarkable travels, adventures and near-death experiences that have marked his quest to discover the meaning of life. O'Neil's practical insights, born of experience, cut across religious boundaries to convey a vibrant spirituality in plain, accessible language."
A riveting adventure travel story that filled a lifetime, an epic journey of self-discovery, with spiritual realizations and intense physical challenges along the way, including multiple near-death experiences.
Many have turned away from traditional organized religions to explore their own relationship with the Divine. The author is one of these seekers and this book chronicles his coming to terms with an inner understanding of reincarnation that he could faintly remember as a boy and sought to understand more fully as he grew older.
It follows him to many of the world’s sacred places—across Europe to the Middle East, from Jerusalem to Istanbul, then overland across Asia to Himalayan monasteries, from Darjeeling to Saranath where the Buddha taught his first sermon, from the cremation vats of Benares on the banks of the Ganges to the mystical plains of South India.
It is the inspiring story of a lifetime’s quest for the sacred, ancient wisdom, alluded to by the mystical traditions of the world’s cultures. All of this while experiencing the teachings and miraculous intercessions of the Great Ones—the great masters, sages and saints of East and West who comprise the Brotherhood of Light.
This story details the lifelong chain of events that brought about these intercessions and the prior and subsequent interactions with the Great Ones that so shaped Gene’s life. And there is a much deeper story here. A story that is vast in its implications and that contains a challenge to all who seek to know the truth – a story that helps to answer our greatest questions: Who are we? Why are we here?

An Upraised Chalice sets the tone for anyone ready for their own journey of discovery. Those who would drink from O Neil s chalice of understanding will find its contents full and complex. Near death encounters, a travelogue to the world's spiritual places and their impact on his life and understanding make for a fascinating blend of self-inspection, pilgrimage, and revelation that holds many possible truths that will resonate with many readers. O'Neil's search in a way can be identified as the modern dilemma of 'everyman': "There is a growing sense among many that something major is missing in our civilization - a lack of moral compass, a lack of direction. Many are looking for answers." And the crux of living lies in these questions: "The years turn into decades and sooner or later, (hopefully later) sickness or accidents happen and all are again confronted with the big questions: Why? What's next? What has this life that I've lived been about? As one begins to consider their own eventual departure: What have I been able to do to make things a little better? What have I passed along to make others' lives more beautiful?" --D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review
The remarkable story of a lifetime quest by a modern-day mystic of his world travels and then integrating his experiences back into professional life in America. But what is really interesting here are the practical disciplines that he incorporated into his life that paved the way for his survival in multiple near-death experiences. A fascinating and thought-provoking read. --David Tame, author The Secret Power of Music and Beethoven and the Spiritual Path
About the Author
When he returned to the United States 17 months after he left on his quest, he resumed his studies at the university and learned how to fly. He became a professional pilot and balanced that time in the air with building a self-sufficient homestead in the Green Mountains of Vermont a passive solar home powered by a hydro-electric plant. It was here that he has raised his family and hosted meditation retreats for 25 years. This period was punctuated with multiple near-death experiences and other mystical encounters. Aside from being a pilot, builder and cabinetmaker, he designed and built a state-of-the-art solar aquaculture facility that received national attention. He was asked by the United Nations to bring this design to developing countries.
After a lifetime of extraordinary adventures in studying and experiencing first-hand the teachings of the Great Masters of east and west, he wrote it all down so that his children and all others might benefit.

I was more interested in what happens when he gets back to the U.S.A. He joins the Summit Lighthouse and adds "decrees" to his spiritual practice of meditation. Decrees are a scientific way the Masters teach of calling to God and the Heavenly Host using the power of the spoken word.
Gene buys a beautiful piece of land in Vermont and describes how he turned it into a spiritual retreat and establishes a business there raising fish for area restaurants frequented by tourists. His attunement with the Presence of God in his life gives him the impetus to go to town one day, where he meets the woman he will later marry. Because of his daily meditations and calls to the archangels, he has some very intense experiences in which his life is actually saved by Archangel Michael, who alerts him that he needs to call immediately for protection, for the Heavenly Host cannot intervene in people's lives without being invited; and there is, in fact, an impending collision around the next corner. He was injured, but he could have been killed. There is another incident when his backhoe rolls over as he was digging a pond on his property wherein he would have been crushed, but instead finds himself miraculously standing on the sidelines.
Gene O'Neil is very enthusiastic about the Temple of the Presence, where the Ascended Masters have begun anew since the Messenger of the Summit Lighthouse retired. He prints several of the decrees in the book that he hopes will be good starts for the reader to experiment with.
"An Upraised Chalice" is a very inspirational story by an individual who, in attunement with the God-Flame in his own heart, takes responsibility for his challenges and doesn't settle for anything less than God Himself would want for his beloved sons and daughters in embodiment, (which includes us all, of course) and it will assure the reader that God and the angels and Ascended Masters are more available for practical interventions in the lives of those who connect with them than you may have thought possible. The key seems to be that ongoing connection that he maintains with daily meditation and verbal calls. I was inspired to begin a program of regular meditation after reading this book!
The author takes us on a tour de force of self-discovery, physical stamina, and a spiritual quest culminating in some extraordinary experiences in his later years. On the way we stop and share with him some of the sacredness of many of the holy sites and shrines he visits. He shares with us the fruit of this path of self discovery and some encouragement and signposts we too can benefit from on our own.
Hurrah for a remarkable story of one man's quest for spiritual enlightenment and for sharing it.

It is a wonderfully exciting account of the author's own spiritual (and physical) experiences, with the most useful links and practical information for anyone who is inspired to investigate further the amazing methods and manifestations and that he describes.
Here is a person who is no longer a seeker, a spiritual theorist - but one who has found the means to living the blessed life intended for all.
