Editorial Reviews

Growing up in New Jersey, Koch Records recording artist Victoria White began her musical life listening to jazz artists like Sarah Vaughn and Miles Davis. Eventually her interest grew to embrace a wide array of styles and genres to form her own eclectic sonic blend. Fortunately now for fans of jazz, rock, folk and R&B, it was all of these influences that began the rudimentary bedroom recordings of the songs she began writing as a teenager. Years before she began working with famed R&B guitarist Sheldon Reynolds [EWF] -- who produced her highly anticipated debut album The Upside. White recorded her voice on one tape recorder, her guitar on another and mixing them to create coolly primitive tracks of her earliest material.

It is rare to find an artist/cd today that every cut is enjoyable, this is one of those rare finds . . . for old school hand dancers this is a must have set . . .especially "Can't buy Love" . . .reminds me of Cleveland Ohio in the early 70's :-) . . . you had to be there . . . Victoria has a true gift and in this, what appears as her second cd (looks like she released one called "Home" in 2005 which I will have to check out after listening to this one) she totally exposes that gift . . . reminiscent of Vivian Green but has a feel of all of the great ones, Kashif(check out "Paper Doll"), Angie Stone,Erykah,Jill . . .with a little Tracey and Corrine thrown in for free . . . an excellent mix of stories and rythyms set off by a magnificent voice . . . I am already looking forward to her next move . . . .

This is what I said about her first CD "Home":

If I had to choose one word to put "Home" in context, it may be "Addictive". The grooves lay back there putting it all together for some great vocal performances, vocals with the most thought provoking lyrics I have heard in a while. As an artist too, I really want to have something to listen to that is really new and fresh. This is often achieved when you are creative outside and beyond the box, not just a talent that can play really great. When you can take your imagination and transform it into a physical force, that is sound, and do so without any restrictions induced by your natural confluence with the rest of society, you have something new and fresh........And that is what this work represents.

My feelings are the same for "Upside", with a little extra "wham"! If you want compositions that can transport your mind and emotions to that special place true forms of art are known to do, Victoria White's music is that form of art. "Upside" is just that, it is the upside of creative excellence and innovation. This CD is a collectible. Can't wait for the 3rd.

I am so glad I purchased this CD because there are only a few performers whose music stopped me dead in my tracks as if a diamond materialized from nowhere. From whence she came, Victoria White is a siren with a hypnotic voice singing emotional stories one has to follow. Joined by layered guitar arrangements and artsy harmonic background vocals that create a subtle dynamic pulse, Ms. White's expressions within her fluid music reservoir are present with each cut from The Upside. While my favorites are the love-torn "Exodus," "Girl of Your Dreams," and the progressive "Something," I'm captivated with the entire production. I play this CD frequently without becoming bored. I'm a bit surprised that she may actually be talent undiscovered by the masses. Here's hoping the rest will catch up to her unique talent. It's wonderful.
