These books have similar concepts and attitudes but reflect different hierarchies, worldviews, and writing styles. King relates one of the many traditions of Hawaiian shamanism, distinguishing between mystics and shamans and between warrior shamans and adventurer shamans. Shamans use their skills for the benefit of the world, and King offers insights on such skills as divination, meditation, and healing. Accessibly written, this is full of intriguing concepts and possibilities. Markides, who introduced the teachings of a Greek Cypriot healer in The Magus of Strovolos (1985. o.p.) and Homage to the Sun (Methuen, 1985), here considers a number of healers attuned to higher levels of consciousness. They argue that human beings are multidimensional and that the higher we ascend to superconscious self-awareness, the greater the love and compassion we feel for others. Their teachings also incorporate the teachings of Christ. Recommended for large collections on spiritual subjects.

About the Author

Serge Kahili King, Ph.D. is the author of many works on Huna and Hawaiian shamanism, including Urban Shaman and Instant Healing. He has a doctorate in psychology and was trained in shamanism by the Kahili family of Kauai as well as by African and Mongolian shamans. Dr. King is the Executive Director of Aloha International, a non-profit, worldwide network of individuals who have dedicated themselves to making the world a better place.

As an author, Dr. King has published the world's largest selection of books and digital media on Huna, the Polynesian philosophy and practice of effective living, and on the spirit of Aloha, the attitude of love and peace for which the Hawaiian Islands are so famous. He also writes extensively on Hawaiian culture.
