Twelve years later Xavier is working a landscaping job and going to nursing school. Trent has come back to Ashe to work in the urgent care clinic. Their re-encounter is sizzling hot and their attraction is as strong as ever.
Xavier and Trent are great characters with multiple layers. Xavier has been hurt by Trent’s decision and Trent has some serious groveling to do. He has to proof that he has changed and that he is here for the long haul. The death of his good friend had put everything in perspective for Trent. It made him rethink petty things like pride and fear of rejection. I liked it that Xavier doesn’t give in easily. Not that he is a bad guy and doing it out of spite. On the contrary, he is a good guy, but he has to protect his heart. He also acknowledges the fact that Trent is not the only one to blame for their breakup.
DJ has written a lovely slow-burn story about two guys who never have forgotten each other, but are at different stages in life. The first chapter sets the stage for the rest of the book. The writing is captivating and keeps you reading. She captures the emotions perfectly. It takes some time before Xavier and Trent are really together, but there are quite some hurdles to overcome. You keep rooting for the guys, because they are so perfect for each other.
I was honoured with an advanced reader copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this book.

I fell into DJ Jamison's world and I can't see myself letting go. Slowing I am making my way into her vision, but the medical world is my field IRL and I gravitate toward it no matter what.
What can I say about Urgent Care? It is so far my favorite in the Hearts and Health books and oh my gawd, that cover is fabulous. Who doesn't enjoy a feminine dressing hottie who is just as masculine when he wants to be? I had been waiting on Xavier's (X) story and it was not what I had expected.
From previous reads, I knew he was sassy and a good friend. What came out was a hard working nurse, a family-loving, "when I love I give my all" kinda man. Forget that he had a side that came out now and again that teased and tested. Here was a man who caved when his first love reentered his life. But he had to be strong enough not to fall again for someone who may just walk away again.
Trent understood loving and losing. He had thought X had given up on him years prior and had left, never looking back. When he lost his best friend and colleague, it shifted his perception and forced him to focus on the one thing that he barely thought about. What if... What if he had never left X? What if they had made a life together? What if he ended up like his friend? Abandoning his career as a surgical doctor, he found himself back home, in the same hospital as X. But would he ever find his way back to both his loves?
When they met it was awkward and trying. But spending weeks together made it impossible to ignore each other. And if neither were willing to listen to the other, then a host of secondary characters were right there to force their hand. Another good story about forgiveness and acceptance.
I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from the author.
