Urnex Dezcal Home Activated Descaler
Urnex Dezcal Descaling Powder
The build-up of mineral scale is a threat to the performance and durability of coffee and espresso machines. Mineral scale build-up can impact your machine’s boiler, preventing water from reaching its optimal brewing temperature. At insufficient temperatures, it is impossible to extract the full flavor from your coffee beans. Mineral scale build-up can also clog water flow, and if not removed, can cause a machine to stop working.
Descaling removes the mineral scale build-up that forms on the heating element of all coffee equipment. Dezcal Descaling Powder is odor free and rinses away thoroughly, unlike vinegar which can be difficult to rinse, takes longer to be effective and leaves behind an unpleasant odor and aftertaste that affects the aroma and taste of your coffee.
How often should I use Dezcal?
Descale your coffee or espresso machine every 3 months; more frequently if you live in an area with hard water.
- Dissolve 1 packet (28g) of Dezcal Descaling Powder into 32oz (1 liter) of lukewarm water.
- Pour the descaling solution into the machine's water reservoir.
- Brew a full tank of the descaling solution and discard.
- Refill the water tank with fresh water and brew a full tank. Repeat this step 2 more times to clear the machine of any descaling solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Cleaning vs Descaling
Cleaning is the process of removing the coffee oils that will affect the taste that you want from your carefully selected coffee beans. Descaling is the process of removing the mineral build-up from the heating elements in the machine. Regular descaling will help extend the life of the machine and maintain consistent temperature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why shouldn't I just use vinegar?
Vinegar is a relatively weak acid that will not clean away many coffee oils or descale efficiently. It is difficult to rinse, takes longer to be effective and leaves behind an unpleasant odor and aftertaste that can affect future brews.
Why is machine maintenance so important?
Coffee is by nature a very oily substance. Over time, coffee oils accumulate inside of your machine to form a rancid residue. This residue is responsible for the acrid smell you may recognize coming from a poorly maintained machine. Unfortunately, this residue causes more than just bad odor. If allowed to develop, residue inside of your machine will eventually clog the machine and cause it to malfunction. Well before your machine clogs or you even notice the signs of neglect, the stale residue lining the inside of your machine will begin to affect the taste of your coffee.

Dezcal home activated descaler, 4 portion packets per retail carton. Mineral scale in your hot water tank can clog water flow and negatively affect brew temperature - this results in beverage inconsistency. To prevent your machine from clogging and breaking down, your beverage equipment should be descaled regularly. Dezcal is a safe option for removing lime scale build-up in your machine. Dezcal™ can be used on home coffee brewers, espresso machines (traditional and automatic), kettles, and pod and capsule machines. NSF certified for metal compatibility. For best results, use quarterly (water hardness in your area may require more or less frequent descaling).

Again, it's important that U run, until the carafe is clear white, after each use. Try and hurry it and you'll have disaster on your hands the first cup of 'whatever' you call it afterwards. It broke my son from drinking coffee forever...which some have said has been a good thing for him.
Of course, 'everything you eat or drink' is going to kill ya'. We all have a terminal illness: it's called life.
The product is a coarse granulated powder packed in small plastic packets. I emptied the contents into the tank, filled it with water and stirred it a bit to dissolve, pushed s few buttons and voila! Caffeinated again!
If I have any criticism of this product it is the fact that the instructions on the box are silver and printed in white ink with a 3 point font. You can't read it... The text on the packets is the same size but black on white. Irritating but not a game changer.
This is the least expensive rescaling product I found on Amazon and it does the trick without any fuss. Easy peasy and I'm back to being fully caffeinated!
I gave it some good cleaning of the contact surfaces and rubber o-rings, put it back together and the machine was working fine again.
However, there was still a slow leak from the group head (enough to make the pump kick in every 10-15 seconds) and the machine would leek steam when I would pre heat it for steam wand use.
I ordered this product to try descaling first before ordering replacement seals, and after running a liter of water with one packet of the descaling powder, and flushing it 3 times, the machine works as new! No dripping, no leaking steam, i can leave it on for an hour without the pump turning on even once.
I'm impressed at how well this has worked to restore a neglected espresso machine into like new condition! I will use this regularly from now on!
I will be using Dezcal once a month from here on out.
NOTE: 2 weeks ago I left vinegar in it over night and it was a waste of time, vinegar and money!
