When you are poor and you aren’t used to owning much then you can be very happy with little things. Like being able to pay your bill or buying second hand clothes or having a healthy meal. You’re grateful to survive and you just wish for a quiet and peaceful life. That’s how Dahlia lives her life. It may seem boring but Dahlia likes it that way. But then one day a handsome stranger walks into the coffee shop where she works and her life will never be the same again.
The last thing that Theo Amato wanted when he walked into that coffee shop was drinking bad coffee but one look from outside the window had him convinced to go inside and meet the beautiful barista working there. But one time wasn’t enough. Soon they were spending more and more time together but both were hiding things from the other. But things that could end this romance before it even started. Could Dahlia forgive Theo for the secrets he hides for her and can Theo convince Dahlia that love is worth the risk of opening your heart to someone?
I loved the fact that although Theo was an alpha man, his alpha ‘vibe’ wasn’t over the top. Yes, he was used to having his way but it was never hard or forceful. One thing that I really adore about this story is the fact that the writer left the reader (or at least me) guessing about who Theo really was. Although I suspected some things about Theo, I was never really sure until a certain moment in the story and I just LOVED that! The main characters Theo and Dahlia really had my attention but I also liked the side characters very much. Theo’s family and friends. The way they connected with Dahlia. Their loyalty. This story has a little of everything. It’s emotional, fun, excited. And the sex scenes… one word…HOT.
Layla Frost is now on top of my favourite writer’s list!
The brass tacks
Safe romance, violence, talk of violence, open door and frequent love scenes, adult language and content,
With Us sucked me in from the beginning and was an absolute thrill to read. The story is broken into two sections surrounding a catalytic event, a before and after so to speak. This was a very smart and conscious way for Frost to lay out the story, as it served to set up the entire experience for the reader. I loved that she sectioned it off in this manner because it really served to bring the pieces of the story together while intentionally intensifying the various threads of the plot. This was a very richly layered love story, and Frost brilliantly peeled those layers back, slowly exposing more of the tale, carefully doling out bits and pieces until they all come together. The attention to detail and the plot and character development in With Us was incredible and very methodical.
This book was just so exciting to read. Completely engrossed, I found myself elated, engaged and interested from cover-to-cover. The love Theo had for Dahlia, while definitely encroaching upon obsession, was beautiful and just what this woman needed in her otherwise lonely existence. Their love was true, deep and scorchingly sexy. This story was about more than love, though. It was about family and making the most of the one you’ve been given. It was about recognizing your partner’s imperfections, coming to terms with them and accepting them. There were a few suspenseful arcs to this story that ramped anticipation, keeping me fully riveted to the story. Frost punctuated all of this with her fabulously timed, dry sense of humor.
I often found myself struggling between wanting to devour this book and forcing myself to slow down and savor it. I’ll be honest, I don’t always feel this way when I’m reading and I haven’t felt it quite so intensely or acutely in a while. It’s an amazing feeling to get so lost in a favorite author’s words and world that you lose time, but that’s exactly what I did here. I absolutely loved everything about this book. I think Layla Frost is a rare and special talent. I believe she’s someone to watch and an author to be excited about. Each of her books are amazing in their own right. But this one was a bit different, a bit more from her than we’ve seen in her previous works, and it all came together spectacularly. I highly recommend all of her work, but if you want something a bit out of the ordinary, With Us is what I'd suggest.
