Product Description

It is Matias manufactured by separation type ergonomic keyboard headquartered in Canada. The key switch to be a cornerstone of the keyboard has adopted a Matias original silent click switch that is designed based on the design of the ALPS switch. Because hands and key switches with excellent rich click feeling and quiet without imposing a burden on the finger, it is possible a comfortable typing without having to worry about around in the office. "Page Up", "Page down", "Home" is also sticking to the placement of special keys such as "End", while maintaining the traditional pattern, it was housed in a compact in two rows of the lower that easy to press those keys. Not only the beauty of appearance, it has become the sequences aligned also serves as ease of use. Also, it is possible to equip an adjustable tilt stand, it can be adjusted to the height of the favorite keyboard. So that it is possible to provide a more comfortable environment, it is also equipped with a detachable palm rest. Great keyboard, but only for 3 months

I’ve owned this for > 1 year now and can speak to real use.

This is a relatively expensive keyboard. There aren’t too many ergonomic split keyboards on the market, and with the popular Matias pro and mini I was hoping this model would live up to its predecessors.

I really enjoyed all of the features it has to offer but after 3 months, I started experiencing some weird behavior such as hitting the “j” key once would fire off multiple times on a single stroke. Also the spacebar on one side just stopped working altogether. All of this is less than a year of using. Remember I said this is a pretty expensive keyboard.

While it was still under warranty, the company gave me a replacement free of hassle. However after a few months again, the same issues surfaced. They again sent another replacement but warned that was the end of the support they would give since the warranty expired. :(

As a newbie to mechanical keyboards, I thought I could DIY and replace the switches (taking a guess that it would solve the problem), however I learned that the keys are soldered on! A do-able but much bigger task that would involve disassembly of the unit, a soldering job, and who knows if that would fix it. Not a simple pop and replace. Not only was this an expensive keyboard, it is expensive to maintain.

I really wanted to like this keyboard but the value is not there given the problems I had only a few months after using. I spent a lot of money on this already, and now I have to spend more foe another keyboard that will actually last.

FINAL UPDATE (2019-01-22):

The key chatter has gotten worse to the point that the keyboard is now basically unusable. I've now spent another $350 on an Ergodox EZ, which is probably what I should have ordered in the first place.

The wrist rest is falling apart, keys repeat randomly when least expected, or don't fire. It's impossible to complete a single sentence without having to tap the backspace key several times. This product is not worth the price, after sales support for non-US buyers is non-existent, and it is just very poorly made and apparently not tested for longer than one week.

I really wanted to like this keyboard. It had everything I needed, but it just doesn't work. I will soldier on for the next week or two while I wait for my Ergodox to arrive. At least I've remapped backspace to the right thumb key, so it's faster to hit. By the time the other keyboard arrives, I suspect my thumb will have grown half an inch wider from exercise though.

This not acceptable. To demonstrate, I will type the last paragraph of this update at moderate speed, and not make any corrections. For posterity:

The Matias Ergo Pro is simply nott reliable in any way. The key chatter and occasional failure to trigger mean it is almost unusable for serious typing like writing or coding. I wish I'd known about other options before I ordered this. When accounting for the customs fees I had to paay to import it, this is basically a $300 paperweight.

UPDATE TO MY PREVIOUS UPDATE:

The key chatter problem has sadly not gone away. I still have some keys repeating at random, and performing the procedure to realign the keys only solves it for a while. Because I still prefer this layout, I have decided to just learn to live with the inevitable key chatter, at least until I find something else which will work better.

The keyboard is now two months old, and the material from one of the wrist rests has started to detach. I contacted Matias, who offered to replace the wrist rests for me under warranty, but then backtracked when they realised I was not in the U.S. The best they could offer was a PayPal rebate with which I could basically do nothing, and having me attempt a repair on the existing wrist rest using super glue.

I will attempt that repair, but regardless of that, it's evident that the build quality of this keyboard is not up to standard. It has amazing potential, but poor quality control just ruins it. I could forgive something like the wrist rest niggle, but the key chatter isn't going away, and to be frank, neither of these should be an issue at the premium price point Matias demand for this device.

So I've revised my review from the original five stars (later four) to two. This is simply not good enough, and on the whole, quite disappointing.

UPDATE: My original review is posted below, but requires some updates:

My keyboard is now working properly.

While waiting for a response from Matias technical support, I tried some troubleshooting of my own. A blast of compressed air over the keyboard, and especially over the problematic A key, didn't make much of a difference, except causing even more repeats. I also tried cleaning the contacts for the USB port, as well as the TRRS ports, with switch cleaner, and swapped out the USB and TRRS cables to eliminate them as the problem.

They were not the cause. I then decided to pull the off the key cap and inspect the switch. After removing the keycap and giving the switch another blast of compressed air, I did some test typing before replacing the cap, and everything worked absolutely fine. I could not reproduce the key repeating problem at all during about 10 minutes of test typing.

I then replaced the cap, and the problem has still not returned, which lead me to suspect that either the keycap or the switch were misaligned.

I got a reply from Matias' technical support several hours later (though I should note they did reply within about 8 hours of my original request). Their response seems to corroborate what I already thought, that the key switch became misaligned somehow. They say that this is usually caused by the unit getting bumped during shipping, which is definitely possible, as one side of the box was actually quite crumpled and crushed on arrival (thanks for that, UPS)

They offered some more instructions for how to realign the key cap and switch, without having to remove the cap. For the sake of completeness, in case anyone else stumbles upon this, I will reproduce their instructions below.

In conclusion, I really really want to give this keyboard five stars. Its performance, now that it's fixed, is worthy of a five star review, but I still feel like having an item arrive somewhat defective at this price point is not good enough. The key switches themselves might not be the problem, but seeing as this is apparently a very common problem, I think Matias should at least make some effort to improve their packaging such that misalignment couldn't occur, or, if that's not possible or prohibitively expensive, at least include some documentation in the packaging to warn users that misalignment during shipping could happen, and instruct them on how to check for and resolve that problem.

So, four stars it us, up from the original three. A shame really, as this might still be the best keyboard I've ever owned, as long as this kind of thing doesn't happen again.

For completeness, Matias' response to my request, and below that, my original review:

If the problem seems to be an isolated case of one or two keys, we suggest
the following standard quick fix sticking key techniques:

First, try blowing compressed air around the key. This may remove any
dust or particle obstructing the keyswitch motion.

Second, put a business card on the left side of the key, pushing the key
to the right while you tap firmly multiple times on the top of the key.
This may realign the key. If this doesn't work, try again with the
business card on the right side of the key, pressing to the left, then try
from the top, and finally try from the bottom, as the key may be out of
alignment from any of the four sides.

Overall, this is a great keyboard. I received mine a week ago, and very much enjoy using it. The switches provide just enough tactile feedback, and the split configuration means I can set it very wide, which is very comfortable for someone with broad shoulders.

There is one major problem though, which has already been mentioned by many other reviewers here. The quality control on Matias' key switches is certainly not sufficient. While doing normal typing, the "a" key almost consistently repeats. I do occasionally get a clean keypress on it, but more often than not, I get "aa" when I wanted "a". (In fact, the "aa" shown is as typed, while for the second "a" I had to use backspace.

This is very distracting and costing me enough time while coding that I'm seriously considering going back to a very unsatisfactory scissor action Apple keyboard which happens to be at hand, at least until I get some feedback from Matias' support desk.

At this price point, this kind of lax quality control is simply not good enough, and the chatter really ruins what would otherwise be easily the best keyboard I've yet used.

Don't buy this until Matias address the problem. It's a great keyboard, but simply doesn't work as it should.

As a parting demonstration, I will leave a few standard typing test sentences below, without correction, as the keyboard sends it to my system:
