However, Richard Beach and David O'Brien, in their book Using Apps for Learning Across the Curriculum, provide both practical advice and a literacy-based framework for addressing these critics and their concerns.
Beginning on the very first page, Beach and O'Brien provide vignettes of teaching and learning that demonstrate the ways that dozens of apps can be used for a variety of literacy activities. From reading ebooks to writing collaborative docs, from critically viewing images and video to producing their own visual texts, Beach and O'Brien show how students can learn (and and reflect on their learning) using apps that allow them to take notes, share documents, design images, engage in sophisticated games, and participate as active literacy learners.
Beach and O'Brien include shortened URLs for all the apps, so reading the book and downloading new apps at the same time is a seamless activity. This makes the book user-friendly and, more importantly, immediately usable.
