There is no way to begin this review without addressing the name of the main character.

Tingly.

What parent names a kid TINGLY? Apparently this girl's, and those parents are, as the book indicates, wretched individuals, the naming of their only child notwithstanding.

Given that Mr. and Mrs. Simmons are the creations of novelist Rachel Blaufeld, the next question you may have is why a writer would name a character Tingly, a character we are meant to empathize with, like, and believe.

Tingly.

The definition of tingly is "causing or experiencing a slight prickling or stinging sensation." So perhaps the naming of our heroine is symbolic. For Tingly Simmons, you see, experiences - and causes - considerable prickling and stinging.

When you meet her, Tingly is preparing for her junior year of college. She's a distance runner on the track team, having red-shirted her sophomore year after she was found in a state of naked post-coital bliss with her French professor. Voulez vous coucher avec moi, indeed.
Disgraced and dumped, Tingly finds herself deeply depressed as well. It was a dark year, and now, after a year of therapy and healing, she's ready for a fresh start. Or as fresh a start as you can have, given that most of the campus thinks of her as the tart who nailed her professor.

As Tingly tries to avoid most personal interactions, save that with her roommate, she does not respond well to Tiberius when the two first meet. He's tall, dark, and dangerously handsome, and she can't deny her attraction to him. But sex has long been a weapon for Tingly, something she tends to use as a means of power, and she's desperate to feel a sense of strength.

This book was just perfect. Rachel Blaufeld has outdone herself in verite and it quickly became one of favorite reads in 2015. This story swallowed me up and transported me to a college town that I’m pretty sure I was a part of. Rachel has a way with words, and this book being different than her others, pulled at my heart and made me feel for these characters like I hadn’t in a long time. The details and emotions were so real that I forgot about the world around me and just let this story take over in my mind.
Not only do we meet challenges with stereotypes, but we are faced with internal battles and ways of coping with the past that are just so true and raw. I love the honesty in this book.

Tingly {I want to be friends with her} is facing the consequences of her actions from the year before and trying to restart college where she left off, both with her track team and peers. Speaking of peers, I loved the role the secondary characters played and it all flowed so perfectly.
Tiberius is just perfect. He’s the sweet baller with intimidating size and heart of gold. He hasn’t had it easy in life either but his outlook in life is admirable. I want his positivity! Tiberius’ patience, persistence and understanding for Tingly tugged at my heart.

I don’t want to give anything away, so I will say that the way these two come together as friends first is wonderful to read. I loved to watch them bloom and the twists and turns Rachel puts us through are fabulous (in a seriously?! kind of way). So perfect.
I’m not sure my review can do it justice. I just loved everything about this book. I found myself sighing, smiling, highlighting sentences and making sure this story stayed somewhere deep in my heart for a long time. Amazing book, Rachel. Congrats!

Tingly hasn't made the best choices in life. Just last year, she got caught having sex with her French professor in his office. A year later, after therapy and some time to recover, she's back on the track team and ready to get her life back together. She's not looking for a relationship, she doesn't do relationships anyways. Tiberius is a freshman basketball player. He's not like the other guys on the team, he doesn't do hookups. He's kind, sweet and thoughtful. He's exactly what Tingly needs, even though she doesn't know it.

I really enjoyed this story and the main reason why is Tiberius. He was perfect! Tingly and Ty were opposites and kind of a role reversal from typical books in the genre. Tingly is the more experienced sexually and has used it to her advantage over the years. Ty is a one-woman type guy and sex needs to mean something to him. There is instant chemistry between these characters. Tingly was not my favorite heroine, she ran away too much and I didn't like the way she treated Ty in the beginning but as the book progresses and you get to know her, it makes sense why she is the way she is. Ty is incredibly patient, more so than she deserves at times and he really brings out the best in Tingly. I also really liked the supporting characters. I look forward to reading more by this author.

What an absolutely wonderful way to close out 2015. Verite is one of those books that you fall into seamlessly and completely enjoy the ride.

This college-age tale of two very different people who want to move beyond their pasts and try to forge a future together against all odds was just beautiful. I loved the feisty yet vulnerable Tingly and the way she faced up to her transgressions as best she could. I felt for her and the constant need to run, worrying that her mistakes would hurt those around her and it would be best to just stay to herself. But there was no way she could resist the quiet, yet mesmerizing man in Tiberius. Oh my goodness...that man. The man with the uneasy past, who worshipped the mother who wanted more for him than just to be one of the lazy gang who roamed the streets of his native Jersey. His calming nature, his prowess on the basketball court, even the color of his skin, all the complete opposite to Tingly, yet they somehow fit.

Theirs is a difficult fit, though, and with all the miscommunication and all the silly decisions to not be together, mostly on Tingly's part, these two were meant to be.

Just wow. A truly feelgood kind of book that made me smile. And often. I loved Tingly's reactions to Tiberius's teammates and the ways she fought to not be a part of his life. But he wasn't having any of that and to watch him do whatever he could for the girl who held his heart took my breath away. Some might say she didn't deserve his love. But I say he was a man on a mission and saw beneath all the rumors and all the self-doubt and found the woman who would make him whole. There's no rhyme or reason for matters of the heart and for that I'm glad!

Highly recommended and well worth your time.

A huge 5 stars!
