There is significant clamp with the headphones even after years of use and they become uncomfortable after a couple of hours of use -- especially with the very shallow stock earpads. The XL earpads are a must unless you have small ears. I will say that the XL earpads I received directly from V-Moda don't appear to be as thick as some of the other photos I've seen of them. It seems mine were somewhat flattened in the shipping process or they were just a bad set. Another reason I find these headphones uncomfortable is that there is no side-to-side swivel in the earcups that you see with a lot of otehr over-the-ear headphones. This rigidity along with the clamping force of the headphones makes it so that my ears touch the drivers. Again, this is with the XL earpads so you can imagine how uncomfortable the stock earpads feel.
A set of headphones is only as strong as its weakest link and in the case of the M-100s, the weakest link is the plastic used to join the headband with the arms and earcups. As you can see in the attached photos, there are cracks in the plastics stemming from the screws. Odd choice to go with plastic here especially since they tout military grade materials and stress testing.
You can also see the leather in the headband fraying. I contacted V-Moda hoping to purchase a replacement headband but unfortunately they do not sell replacement parts or even accept headphones for repair.
I use my headphones solely for at-home listening and I'm pretty careful with handling my equipment so I was a bit let down by the build quality. They seemed high quality when they were brand new. Again, I really like the sound signature of these headphones but as of the date of this review, V-Moda doesn't seem to offer any other set of headphones that might address my issues with the M-100. I think I'll be looking at other brands when it comes time to replace these headphones -- which may be rather soon.

The meh is that the M-100 is good, but not great out of the box. Add the boom pro mic if you are a gamer, and the coilpro cable if you are going to do any serious audio production, mastering, or DJ work, and it's getting closer. But you definitely will need to get the XL pads to truly enjoy the phones for hours on end - the included pads are small, and the padding just ok. Also, the exoskeleton case is great, but the attached carabiner is garbage and will likely break within a month - so don't depend on it to keep the case on a bag or something. I recommend a Nite Ize size 3 s-biner as a replacement - light, dependable, inexpensive, and with a locking option, it's infinitely better. So be ready to go in for another $75 or so to make the product truly awesome.
The bad is the durability - and the really bad, the 'six-star' customer service from the company. Awesome while they last, I've never had a pair of the company's products survive a full year past the warranty period without any issues, which is something pretty dismal at this price point. Tell me you have beautiful, foldable cans with near-audiophile quality sound for $250, and I'm interested. Tell me that in three years, when a screw falls out of the folding mechanism, the company will tell you they 'aren't able' to send out replacement parts, and will instead encourage you to upgrade to a newer model and I would be incredulous. But it's true. Rather than putting a few extra screws in the super-premium packaging in the first place, or dropping a few in an envelope and mailing them to me, they suggested that I check out their 'immortal life program' and trade in the otherwise perfectly-good headphones for a discount on a new pair. Wow. What a business model. And on top of it, they have the gall to market their customer service as providing a 'six-star' experience! FYI, I have received replacement parts in the past from all of the following headphone manufacturers: Fostex, Klipsch, Beyerdynamic, and Sennheiser, none of whom are claiming that their service is so extraordinary that it deserves an extra star! After trading emails with the V-Moda service folks, I did at least get them to send me the spec sheet for the screw, so I could source them myself. When it happens to you, they are a metric socket cap machine screw, size M1.5 x 3mm. If you can find a black oxide finish, it will be a close match.
I've had customer service experiences I consider beyond excellent. When I was young and broke, Charles Schwab once gave me money to cover a minor overdraft, and now, they hold my entire banking and investment portfolio. I once ran over a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers five years after I bought them, and Luxottica fixed them for me for $30 + shipping. Every time I've had to RMA a computer component, another one is shipped to me before I've even returned the broken one. These are 'six-star' experiences to me.
These V-Moda cans are awesome - buy them. Just remember that when they start to fall apart in minor ways a few years down the road, you are on your own. I would avoid their earbuds in general - they also tend to break after a couple years, and unless you are pretty expert at soldering, it will be difficult to repair the nearly microscopic connections or internals yourself. I recently ordered a pair of their Crossfade 2 Wireless cans for my partner, who hates USB-C to 3.5 mm dongles - I'll let you know how they stack up.
The reason I subtracted the 1 star, is the initial ear cushions are god awful, the V-Moda XL Heavy cushions are an absolute must buy for these headphones, I see absolutely no reason why they aren't the default cushions. Truly, the cushions that come with it are horrible, they hurt your ears and they don't facilitate sound as well as the XL cushions in my opinion.
The sound isolation is good, it's easy to enjoy music while walking through the city, though it is nowhere NEAR sound cancelling. Voices come through the cushions clearly.
They have definitely ruined my other earbuds/headphones for me, I exclusively use these. The V-Moda boompro mic is excellent as well, definitely a good peripheral purchase for these hedphones.
TL;DR Get the V-Moda XL Cushions or don't get these headphones. The boompro mic is good. Sound quality amazing for music and games
Top reviews from other countries
So when i first bought these cans i was a bit hesitant, as the price tag was quite hefty and though the reviews were generally very positive there were some that said they lacked in clarity particularly in the mids. Firstly i will back this opinion to an extent (discussed below), however being a tad of a "bass-head" it didn't bother me too much. Previously i had bought sennheiser urbanites which were great sounding especially in the low mids, beautiful control and clarity but lacked the oomph bass in the face for me (excuse the technical language). Then i got some sony mdr xb 950s which were utterly flawed IMO. Bass bleed over everything else, and at the same time whilst being very bass orientated they were still muddy and uncontrolled bass frequencies. So i bit the bullet, I "stepped up" a class and got the crossfade m100s after reading various reviews. I was concerned i was paying for style over substance like many reviews have mentioned, but i was wrong. Very wrong (Like most of the reviews i have read also say). IMPORTANT: Headphones and audio preferences are very subjective. SO, if you are gonna buy some headphones, try a few models out: simply return them if you are not happy. All that said, let us proceed.
Firstly, the Crossfade m100s are incredibly sturdy, and IMO quite comfortable. Pretty much everything is made from metal, bar the actual casing of the cans and the ear pads, but the metal shields that fit onto the side of the cans (which are custom design-able and interchangeable via the V-Moda website no less!) add to the fortification and make for a solid build. Whether they look good is a matter of taste. Personally I'm not massively keen on the look, but being nearly 32, i am not a "young-un" (hence don't want to make a fashion statement..Like buying a pair of Beats). However, I find them acceptably pleasant without being too OTP on the eye. SO, if you are slightly older you will still look ok (if you actually care!) or if you are a fashionista regardless of your age, then the M100s will do you proud in an understated manner.
Lets get to the bare-bones, the sound. I have a very eclectic taste in music and many different genres on my mp3 player. From John Martyn, TIm Buckley, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Pantera, Gustav Holst, Mozart, Talking Heads, Sex Pistols, Primus, Aretha Franklin, Betty Davis, Adam and the Ants, Otis Rediding and so on and Loads of dance, Drum and bass, happy hardcore, hard house, acid house, old skool etc. The M100s deal with all of them well. Yes as many reviews say they are definitely tuned to the more bass driven music such as dance music and funk and soul.Which is very true and they perform exceptionally well with these genres. But they deal with "lighter stuff" very well. If you like folk and classical they will still deliver: giving a detailed and clear audio experience, but you will lose depth on the mid range. So don't expect really up front pulsing guitar riffs on classic rock tracks or a bellowing string section on Ravel's Bolero but you will still hear everything in a beautiful powerful clarity. The detail on vocals for the price range is extraordinary. The top end is exceptional. BUT, this is also a downfall, If you are going for a true audiophile sound, these headphones may not be for you because they do not deliver enough clarity in the mids. They are definitely NOT referencing headphones. TBH, i don't and didn't want that from these: they offer an exciting and particular sound, giving enough bass to suit my needs (just) without a headphone amp. and deal with the on board eq of my sony nwz e585 well enough. But if you really want these headphones to come alive read the following section.
Their performance with a headphone amp is even better. i have a Fiio E07K Andes, which is quite hard to get these days. BUT, whatever you get, as long as it is decent, these headphones come alive! A headphone amp will not cost more than a 100 quid for a decent one, especially if it is a Fiio. At only 32 Ohms these headphones don't need much to power them and if you are just using your phone or mp3 player they will definitely do the job. However, seriously, a good headphone amp WILL SORT THESE OUT EVEN MORE! After 60 hours burn in with my E07K they sound wonderful. I can hear the minutest of detail on my "proper music" tracks and on dance tracks the bass is tremendous, Hope this has been helpful.
I dj open format stuff with it and its pretty comfortable. I don't use it for any extended listening just for quick beat matching, so its goes back and forth between my head and my neck at a regular gig say every 2 to 3 minutes.
1. I'm a headphoneaphile.... that is all.
The VModa M-100 Crossovers have been long coverted by myself but I always opted for different headphones. Senniheisser or Sony or Pioneer or Audiotechnica because of what I needed them for but I saw these at less that £150 for the Matte black pair and I had to have them.
Forgoing all the obvious like their incredible build quality and sound and the amazing, if not slightly confusing packaging they come in. Anyone looking at VModa will have done their research and they are here for a reason.
My BIG problem with them is the clamp on the ears is not tight enough. Brand new out of the box and they felt like they'd been worn for a good year already, not uncomfortable by any means but not they tight grip you want from a really decent headphone. The downside of this lack of clamp is noise leaking, which leads to having to play the music quieter so you don't disturb people, which ultimately means it's hard to enjoy these headphones fully because you can't have them up as loud as they are intended. Music should only, ONLY be played loud but because these headphone leak sound you have to play it less than loud so what's the point??
To give a slight review of sound, I listend to Jhenie Aiko - While We're Young, a sound that I have heard so many and it made me say out loud "WOW"...
Personally, I'd go with the Audiotechnica M50x for a better all round sound, you'll be sacrificing a bit of build quality and a touch of style, but you don't get an ounce of noise leakage which means you can turn them up, Up, UP and never have to worry.
There I said it!!
I dislike how most companies of today (I'm looking at you Apple) design products that aren't built to last for more than a few years, which is what "planned obsolescence" is (read up on it). Knowing that you've bought a product that was engineered to be awesome and usable for a long time makes me one happy camper.
I listen to a LOT of Extreme Metal, Post-Rock, and Ambient Music. I also like a good amount of bass. I personally feel that the bass on the M-100 is clean and an ample. Listening to Bloodshot Dawn's "Demons" album, it's like ear candy. So you thought this was only good for electronic music? Not at all! On more peaceful music, like say Hammock (life changing music), the slight vibrations are reproduced to great detail.
Of course, to listen to these headphones, make sure that you play high-resolution music. At the very least 192k MP3, I personally do not go lower than 320k CBR if it's compressed.
These headphone are also very comfortable. I can easily spend several hours with them, and I have a big head!
I purchased the white version as it was the one one sale, but turns out that it's quite fashionable as well.
Purchasing the item, it comes in a package. The headphones, a case, and two kevlar-stitched wiring, one of which has a remote and microphone.
Overall, this is a fantastic set sold in a fantastic package. V-Moda customer service is top notch too! Asked a few questions about the shields and they really answered as if they cared about your experience first and foremost (this is where Apple wins, and V-Moda are on par with them!).
Considering they are Bass headphones they sound very clean and I would recommend them if you don't want overly exaggerated Bass
You need to buy the XL pads as they are terrible without them..
Sound isolation is decent but I wouldn't expect anything crazy.
Would not recommend these headphones without a headphone amplifier personally and would return them if I didn't have one.
**** I wouldn't suggest anyone spends over £100 on headphones without spending about £100-£200 on an amp anyway *****
GAMERS READ, IF YOU USE A DAC/AMP WITH THESE YOU CAN'T USE THE BOOM MIC WITH YOUR DAC.. YOU WOULD NEED TO BUY THE MOD MIC OR A SEPARATE MIC IN GENERAL SO BEWARE..
LONG REVIEW FOR ANYONE INTERESTED -
I wouldn't class myself as an audiophile but audio quality is very important to me... Also, I ordered the XL pads before I even got the headphone and you really do need them, very uncomfortable headphones with stock pads..
I've used the FIIO E7 + E9 DAC and amp combo with my AKG K702 open back headphones for several years now and I really enjoy them. The problem with the K702's is they leak A LOT of noise into the room (i literally put them on the table and use them as mini speakers sometimes) and they need really high end headphone amps (i know my FIIO is not high end).
Also, many people would feel they lack bass because they are designed to have a flat frequency response and to not alter the sound to be more pleasurable for a human ear to hear. As I used to produce music and couldn't have monitor speakers I really needed that in a headphone and they really do deliver on that front.
I decided that I wanted a 2nd pair of headphones specifically for a stronger hitting bass without going OTT and maintaining a clean and controlled sound at the same time and I found the V-Moda M-100's.
Firstly, I listened to these headphones directly from a Samsung S7 and then a Laptop and I wasn't impressed at all and even my GF who bought them for me for xmas could see I was disappointed (to the point were I would of returned them and got a £100 pound pair instead).
However, I plugged them into my FIIO e7 + e9 combo and they sounded MUCH better. I turned up the volume to 85% and I could literally feel the bass vibrating the XL Pads and the whole sound just came alive (also, the max volume is MUCH higher with an amp)..
The best part is they still maintained a very clean and controlled Bass whilst providing the exact umpf I was looking for in a second set of headphones.
