When compared to the other two mentioned above, the V-Moda Vibe earbuds come in third place. While they are easily an upgrade most stock earbuds (if your mp3 manufacture doesn't sell your earbuds apart from the mp3 player), they don't quite match the other two. It is pretty close with the Creative EP830's, but I have to give the nod to the 830's in a narrow victory. In addition to the slightly lower sound quality, I have to have my Clipper at a notch higher volume setting to get a comparable sound level. This implies a faster battery drain on your device.
The other considerations for the V-Moda Vibe are comfort and construction quality. While comfort is not a big problem, I found these slightly less comfortable than the others I have used. I had to go with the largest size of ear fittings in order to get a good seal. I also find the metal vs. plastic casing a bit odd. Also if you notice in the picture there is a bit of a gap between the end of the ear filling and the larger portion of the speaker. This causes somewhat of an odd shape that allows for rubbing on your ear. Fit and comfort vary a lot from one person to the next, but I found that these had more comfort issues than any other earbuds I have used. The one area where I have to praise the V-Moda Vibes is on construction quality. The plug is angled to avoid crimping (which leads to breaking). They also come with a cable manager wrap that lets you manage the extra length of cord thereby avoiding tangles. The carry pouch is also a nice extra at this price point. The cord also has a fabric cover rather than rubber or plastic. This may be of interest to active users as I found a slight transfer of noise when the cord rubs against my clothing.
Overall, I would recommend the V-Moda Vibe headphones if you can get a good price on them. If you can get either of the other earbuds I mention for a similar price, I would go with the other options.
It's important to compare what you're listening to as well as where and for what purpose. When I'm walking on a city street, I don't want noise canceling, so Fontopia's open design is best. Oddly, though, Fontopia gives the best bass of the three.
If I'm listening to classical music - say Itzhak Perleman - then I'll give the J-Buds the higher rating. (I also like the J-Buds because it has the longest cord, but not too long.)
However, and this is very important, the differences between the three are not readily apparent under any circumstances. There's no way to listen to all three at the same time, so everything become relevant. The V-Moda are initially the most comfortable. After 4 hours, they're all a pain in the ear.
There is one thing that I really don't like about the V-Moda: the R and L for right and left channel is hidden under the rubber bud, and it does make a difference. What doesn't make a difference is how good they look, and that I'll never understand. Paying more for red than black seems downright silly. And once they're in your ears, you can't see them anyway. You want something that disappears, get hearing aids.
The V-Modas do seem "brighter" with pop music from the computer. They also "cancel" ambient noise slightly better than the J-Buds. Sooooo, I might go V-Moda on a plane and J-Buds for all other situations. BUT the Sony's still have the best bass and it's noticeable. Btw, on the Sony Walkman, the "Custom setting" is best because you can diddle with your own preferences, but "Pop" gives a better overall range than "Heavy." As for the iPod, I no longer care after having two of them wear out the batteries faster than even an i-River. (Besides, who wants to convert all that music and deal with such proprietary nonsense?)
