Great for hand tapping. This guide makes sure your hand tap goes in straight. The "V" notch is very handy for tapping in round stock (if the hole is straight).

For flat work you can make your own version by drilling and tapping flat stock on your drill press, but for the cost of this thing, why bother.

My Dad used something similar from Stanley. Stanley quit selling it.! It is the next best thing to having a drill press. It keeps the drill square with whatever you are drilling. Being portable makes it better in some cases than using a drill press. You don't have the restrictions of space either so you can use it anywhere.
I bought all three that were available.

Great tapping block - This is a great tapping block for the price. Its american made and very precise.
It is essential when tapping metals. Making sure your tap goes in straight is very important to reduce the chances of breaking a tap inside a part (which honestly can cost you a lot more than this block)

What's also nice is that the block also comes in a little box that's great for storing in the tool box.

It'd be nice if it was made of stainless, but i'd assume it would be a lot of expensive if that was the case.

I do a lot of metalwork by hand. When tapping threads, especially small ones, there is always a risk of misalignment and breakage. This usually ruins not only the tap, but the piece you're tapping as well. This device paid for itself the first day I had it. Good job!

Handy for starting taps assuming the right kind of tap. Some of my taps are have a narrow shank long enough that they are loose in the hole. In that case, the guide acts more as a visual cue rather than a physical guide. With roll forming taps, I find that good technique with the tap handle is usually good enough that the guide is not very useful. I have not used the guide on a round surface, but I imagine this could be very helpful.

This little block fits the bill for drilling straight holes, it's hefty and very clearly labeled. The V groove on the underside is nice for eyeballing straight down, but also useful for round stock or edges.

Just be forewarned, one review says it comes with a case - mine came in one of those plastic things that you need scissors to cut open, but no case. I don't mind though, but just something to consider.

I actually use this a lot more than I thought I would. It works pretty well if you don't have a drill press to get straight holes. I just wish there were some smaller holes on it. It's very durable.
