I was not aware of the selling price when I received this speaker and began listening to it. As I later learned, it is selling for 129 at the time of my review. Compared to many other speakers that I've heard over the last couple years, this rates up near the top for sound quality, build quality, features and appearance. It is my opinion that this speaker can compare quite easily to more expensive speakers such as the Bose Soundlink Mini and Creative Soundblaster Roar.
Consider the following...
- This speaker has 2 forward facing tweeters
- This speaker has a forward facing 10 Watt dedicated subwoofer
- This speaker has 2 rearward facing passive bass radiators
- This speaker includes NFC pairing
- This speaker includes aptX
- This speaker has a decent handsfree feature for your smartphone
- This speaker has great battery life and can be used to charge another device.
- This speaker has EQ with three settings: standard, party and surround.
Talking about the sound I was not expecting a speaker at this price to sound as good as this one does. It had solid bass and clear mids and highs in the "Standard" EQ mode. A very good balance of sound. When certain music is played in the "Party" EQ mode, the bass is more pronounced and very punchy. Not all music will sound better in the party mode... in fact, some bass-heavy-to-begin-with music will sound worse in party mode simply because the sound will become too bass heavy and muddled. The Surround EQ mode is magical when certain types of music are played. If you sit a few feet away from the speaker you will be immersed in sound that seems to be coming from all directions. It's like being in a concert hall.
I like the design and look of this speaker. A full wrap around metal grill with all the controls on the top. The buttons are flush with the top and sculpted. Your finger goes "into" the button a little bit and there is no doubt that you are pressing a button as opposed to some speakers that either have "touch" surfaces or rubberized membranes over the actual buttons that feel indistinct when pressed.
On the back of the speaker is the port bay. It includes a 3.5mm AUX In, 1A USB output (power only), micro USB charging port and AC adapter port.
Accessories included with this are an AC charger (100-240V, 50/60Hz), microUSB cable, and AUX cable.
Battery life is excellent and you can also charge a smartphone or other device using the 1A USB output.
There are a ton of bluetooth speakers to choose from. In my experience you can do much worse than with this one. It's a pleasure to listen to, is great looking and seems to be well built.
Between the packaging and overall feel of the speaker, it really is an exciting piece of electronics to unpackage. The speaker is substantial in weight and has a feel of quality.
I plugged it in, paired it with my Mac, turned on Spotify, and had another definitive holy-moly moment. Between the clarity of sound and my ego patting me on the back for taking the leap and buying it, I found myself jiggling about. (Note: I suspect for the buyers first impression of the speaker, the set volume of the unit is shipped at is about 3/4 max loudness - that really is optimal sound quality volume for this speaker and no doubt why they set it there).
* SECOND IMPRESSION *
Next, I tested how far I could roam with the speaker and see how it faired in the 2 spots I intended to use it most. Kitchen table & nightstand. This is where my endorphins started to come back down to earth.
Kitchen table is 15 ft. from my Mac (I did measure) but I could not establish anything remotely considered to be a musical connection. The line the bluetooth signal has to take from those two spots is through a brick wall and over/through my fridge (Bluetooth is not fond of concrete or metal - no fault of speaker). The only other spot I have room for it and could get a respectable bluetooth connection (in the kitchen) was on top of the fridge - which turns out to be more than acceptable since the height of the speaker now fills the kitchen acoustically far better than at a lower table height (sound bounces off back wall and from under the top cabinet). I do get drop-outs, especially when I move near the speaker.
Next spot was on my nightstand. I laid in bed to test my ability to reach buttons as well as test the lower sound volumes that I would be listening to prior to sleep. This is when I first contemplated returning the speaker.
Being so close to the speaker (literally just inches) I noticed a constant airy hissing sound. Also at the lower volumes it was as if the speaker wasn’t receiving enough sound to process - the speakers were attempting to ‘push’ the lower sounds through but it was if there wasn’t enough of it to do so, and so it pushed air instead and it created a muddled in & out mix of sound and airy hiss. It was clear that this wasn’t going to be the bedtime Bluetooth speaker I was hoping it would be.
* A CONCERN *
There were enough full reviews at the time I was noticing these issues (about 200) that gave a good detailed sense of many of the speakers features and qualities and that’s certainly how I assessed making this purchase myself. I thought 200 reviews would be an accurate assessment. At the time, I could only find one customer question and one other reviewer mention the airy hiss. I was confused that no one else seemed to have noticed it or had bothered to mention it in their reviews. So I did other searches regarding reviews on this speaker in an attempt to get the low-down on the airy hissing sound and determine if my unit was defective or if it was simply characteristic of its design. Here is a reference to a review I found from the website examiner.com that VaVa Voom links to directly on their own website:
“The Bluetooth speaker is able to output clear, crisp, and loud audio. One thing to note is that there seems to be some kind of static noise in the background when audio is playing. This can be a nuisance for many, but for myself, it did not bother me much, especially since the audio tended to overshadow the static noise at medium to high volume levels.”
I fully agree with that review. Albiet, one of my intended uses for this speaker was to play soft music at low volumes at bedtime, and this was not the speaker for that.
* REGARDING CUSTOMER SUPPORT from Sunvalleytek *
I did reach out to Sunvalleytek with an email asking about the airy hiss. I was also concerned with the bluetooth connection being so weak and jumbled (especially when I held the speaker in my hand or was next to it) as well not being able to get the play/pause button to work (regardless what source I was streaming). I needed to assess whether I had a defective unit since (at the time) none of the reviews mentioned the airy hiss or other issues. I will say that I am convinced Sunvalleytek is very interested in having its customers happy with their purchase, and they will reply to questions and concerns and offer replacement when necessary, which they did with me.
I had concluded the speaker is built to be a loud, well-balanced Bluetooth speaker - to which the designers have most definitely succeeded at accomplishing.
I thought Sunvalleytek would acknowledge (as I had discovered) that at lower volumes (especially certain musical genre’s like atmospheric or some meditative music where water sounds are present) that it’s not going to perform as well because it's simply not designed to play at lower volumes. Kind of like my Cerwin Vega AT-15’s, which can easily handle a block party but have absolutely no desire whatsoever to put me softly to sleep at night because they weren’t designed for that. I have determined that this speaker plainly and simply ‘wants’ to be played at the medium to higher volumes. And as for its ability to do that, it has gained my utmost respect. The sound really is clearer at the higher volumes where the background hiss is negligible, if not entirely absent.
I had put this speaker through it’s numerous tests to see if it’s working as it is intended and whether or not it’s a keeper. After corresponding with customer service, it was determined that my original unit was not functioning properly and not up to standards. I have since received a replacement unit (2 day delivery, wow). Sunvalleytek has been very attentive with their customer service regarding my concerns. The replacement has performed far better than the original one I received. It still has a slight airy-ness to the sound but it is far less than the first speaker, and the bluetooth connection is much more stable (even when I am holding it in my hand). Oh, and the play/pause works! yay! The speaker has a permanent home on top of my fridge where it acoustically fills my kitchen very nicely.
* A BRIEF OFF-TOPIC THOUGHT *
When I'm standing in the aisle of a major department store holding something in my hand, I don’t have the option of turning around and asking hundreds of people what they think about the thing. I appreciate being able to research a product here on Amazon. I do wish that ALL reviewers (whether paying customers or those receiving items for free) would actually spend time with the product and review its actual day to day usage RATHER than just after opening the box and reiterating all the features the manufacturer has already advertised. (I just had to say that).
* CONCLUSION *
Even with the mentioned caveats of lower volumes and listening only a few inches away, all in all, it’s a 4.5 star Bluetooth Speaker for its size and price range. And Sunnvalleytek is a responsive company to do business with here on Amazon, and that, in my book, is priceless.
In the meantime, I have found a suitable bluetooth speaker for my nightstand that clearly and cleanly plays at all volume levels (although I had not intended on buying two). It was a little more money than this speaker but a very worthy purchase.
Nonetheless, this VaVa Voom speaker has won my heart and ears with its good looks and sound quality... and I admit I love hanging out in the kitchen allot more lately.
If you got this far in my review I hope it will help in your decision… thanks for reading.
The Good - It's durable! Solid construction. Seems sand and water proof as far as what I've put it through.
It's got very good bass.
It's easy to set up.
It's pretty loud.
Now the bad.
There is constant radio "noise" if a song is played quite or one is not playing but you may be using your phone for something else. (I have a galaxy s7 edge) I hate this because I use the speaker at night when I sleep and it makes classical music or sleep music sound bad. It can be hard to pick up the quite notes in a concerto. Or if you are like me when you are listening to a thunderstorm to fall asleep.
I looked for an update of any kind for this speaker and to date have found none. This is my biggest problem with this speaker. I can only imagine they used a cheap bluetooth radio in the speaker and this is the cause. This single handedly ruined my opinion of this speaker.
SVT reached out to me after my review. They offered to replace it. I decided to give it another try because I love the overall sound and design, it was seemingly a bad Bluetooth radio in the device causing the odd distortion in the signal and sound.
Needless to say, I am very happy they reached out to me and swapped it out. It came in 3 days and the sound is way better with no distortion! I really love the versatility of this device. I can use it to quietly listen to a thunderstorm to sleep to and is great for around the house.
But what sets this apart in my mind even more is that I can use it outside while playing basketball or volleyball and it sounds awesome. Again, with the price and the value of what you get in this speaker, and obviously the customer service from SVT, it doesn't get better.
