Editorial Reviews

Review

Ms Cole did not write just a sequel to an already brilliant storyline. No. She wrote a perfectly executed mind game to keep us glued to our seats, breathless, baffled, frustrated, intrigued, and utterly addicted to a story like no other...
                 ---Natasha is a Book Junkie

From the Author

Dear Reader,

Dante Alighieri said, in his Inferno:
"Do not be afraid; our fate
cannot be taken from us; it is a gift."

Dante lied.

Our fate must be worked for.
It must be paid for.
With tears.
With blood.
With everything we have.

And it is not until the end,
the very end,
that we will know if it was worth it.

This has to be the most twisted storyline I've ever read. I literally don't even know what to say. What is real?...what is made up?...what can I believe?

I hate how this book ends. I'm so frustrated and confused. I thought the end of the first book was really good and dramatic but this is almost too much. I feel like the reader needs to be able to trust something...anything the author is writing, and I just can't. If u only read the last 5 pages of this book you would b reading a completely different story than what you've know to be "true" for 2 books.

I can't say that I don't enjoy these books, I do. I'm just confused and frustrated. I don't really trust this author to tell me the truth. I'm left with another cliffhanger, but I'm not really worried or scared about the outcome in the next book because it feels like any secret that is revealed will just be disproved somewhere along the line. Hmm...I was a really into this trilogy until the end of this second book. Now I don't known what to think.

WOW! Courtney has done it again with this insanity inducing read. Just when you think like you have a grasp on the what’s happening, BOOM it changes. I can't tell you how many theories I had going into this book, it's anything but predictable.

We continue the journey to figure out what secrets Dare may be hiding. What memories Calla is refusing to remember. We learned that Finn was dead at the end of NOCTE. But is he? He is just as present in VERUM, as he was in NOCTE. Cala and Dare head to Whitley; Calla's mother home in England. They are hoping that this will help Calla recover all of her missing memories. Remember that Calla's mother left Whitley and moved to the U.S, and she hadn't spoken to her Mother in years. Calla and Finn never knew that side of the family. While at Whitley, Calla has a chance to connect with others from her mother childhood; mainly her Grandmother, Eleanor. Everyone wants something from Calla, we don't know what that is yet, but I have to agree with her assumptions.
Dare is kind, but our relationship is complicated. Eleanor is severe, Sabine is mysterious, Jones is perfunctory. They all want something from me. This man, this priest, is kind simply to be kind.

Calla is very conflicted in the book. She is slowly learning Dare's secrets. She wants to keep him at a distance. She's not sure if he is good for her. She keeps remembering Finn journal and all the warning that were written in there. Dare himself has admitted to "doing terrible things". In her heart she knows Dare, she loves him. There's tension here, but not the bad kind. It's the kind that ignites you, the kind that intoxicates you, the kind that once you taste it, you'll crave for the rest of your life. Calla needs the truth. She needs to figure that out on her own.

"You’re not safe, Calla. You have to come with me now. There’s something you need to know."

Verum, like Nocte, is a tenuous journey between sanity and lunacy, between deciphering reality from the chaotic depths of a lost mind. What is real and what isn't? And can a person who deems themselves crazy ever really see the truth when they don't trust their own mind to know the difference?

"My mind is a hollow reed and the breeze is blowing through it, blowing all of the pieces away. I want to chase them, but I can’t."

Courtney Cole creates another mind boggling house of illusion of sorts in Verum, where the reader is right along for the ride with Calla, questioning what is real. As the reader, I was completely immersed in this character's confusion, her paranoia, her distrust of her own mind. I could imagine what that would be like, to see things with my own eyes, to touch them, hear them, see them, but doubt my own senses. It's another mind-tripping maze Courtney Cole delivers in Verum, and I knew, just as in Nocte, that nothing would make sense until it does, to take in every detail but not commit to any of it because Cole would ultimately flip everything I thought on it's head.

"The end is the beginning."

Calla is lost. After the events of Nocte, her loss, her grief, her realization that everything she believed was wrong, Verum begins with her final question to Dare... A question Dare insists Calla already holds the answer to, but must remember on her own. This is her journey back to the beginning, back to the place it all began. But Calla is on a precarious cliff and there's no telling whether the truth will save her.

"I’m floating in an ocean of insanity. It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it.

Verum...

A book that not only turned me inside out, it did it over and over again.
I knew this book was going to be twisted, it came as no surprise. But did I realize how many turns it would take. No. This series has left me sliced open. This series is not your gushy love story, its not candy kisses and roses. Its harrowing story of a girl in search of some sort of truth. Even if its soul-crushing.

Verum is a story of truth....

The story of Calla's truth, and her journey to find it. I have to say that I found Calla's story so poignant. She was tormented by not being able to remember what had happened to her but terrified of figuring it out. I have to say this is the 2nd book in this series, and the first book was just as twisted. But not in the way that you don't want to read it. Its hard to call is a physiological thriller even those it fits in that category but this series can't be pushed into one category. Its an epic love story, even when she isn't sure of it, it a thriller, its a mind -- well you know the word. This is a book, no its a series that you do NOT wanna miss out on. Verum picks up with Calla going to Whitley, England, and trying to find the pieces she is missing. She pushes Dare away, and she tries so desperately to keep him away, afraid of the monster he claims to be. But yet wanting so much to have anything she remembers.

Verum is a book, a book you need to add to your kindle NOW! I want so badly to tell you every detail about his story, but its a story thats best told by the author! So stop and buy this book. If you haven't read Nocte, start there but if you have this is a book you won't put down. Well I couldn't put down either one of them, they will suck you in 110%
