What is Rhodiola?
Rhodiola Rosea, or Rhodiola as it is commonly known is a hardy perennial flowering plant that grows naturally in high altitude arctic climates of Eastern Europe and central Asia. A member of the Crassulaceae family, it has many other names including; golden root, Aaron’s rod, rose root, kings crown, arctic root and orpin rose.
Rhodiola is part of a broad family of plants and herbs known as adaptogens - so called because they help the body better adapt to a variety of physical and environmental stressors. Other herbs in this group include Ginseng, Holy basil, Cordyceps and Ashwagandha. Adaptogens like Rhodiola Rosea can help boost energy, fight fatigue, improve mood, boost sexual performance, and enhance cognitive function.
Historically Rhodiola has been used as medicine for centuries by many cultures in the regions where it can be found including British, Scandinavian, Mongolian and Chinese cultures. The Vikings used it to enhance physical strength and stamina, believing it gave them enhanced power and sexual prowess. Tibetan and Mongolian tribes have used it to help adjust to high altitudes and improve oxygen concentration in the blood. Many studies have been conducted by Russian scientists who’ve determined that like many adaptogens Rhodiola Rosea can improve work performance, reduce stress symptoms, boost stamina and reduce fatigue, as well as combat depression and anxiety. Rhodiola has as many uses today as it did centuries ago.
Rhodiola contains many bioactive organic compounds including flavonoids, alkaloids, salidroside, rosin, rosavin, and rosarin. Of these, Rosavin and salidroside have been shown in studies to be primarily responsible for the measurable effects of the herb in humans, with Rosavin found in higher concentrations than salidroside, with approximately a 3:1 ratio within R. rosea.
Like many adaptogens Rhodiola has a wide variety of uses and its effects are highly touted anecdotally though the exact physiological mechanisms by which it works are still unknown.
Rhodiola can be used as a natural anxiety and depression remedy. Rhodiola improves neurotransmitter response towards two powerful mood regulating hormones - Dopamine and Serotonin. By increasing sensitivity to these hormones Rhodiola can help regulate hormone balance and boost overall mood. In some cases, this same effect can be seen in curbing cravings for food or other addictions in those who struggle with weight loss. Those suffering from stress can also find symptom relief while using Rhodiola Rosea.
Over use of stimulants like coffee as well as consistent daily stress can boost your bodies repair hormone Cortisol. In normal amounts Cortisol is good because it is a signal to your brain and body to heal itself - however when your adrenal glands are overworked from stimulants or chronic stress your body releases a continuous amount of Cortisol to balance the equation. This can result in increases insulin levels in the blood, thyroid problems, abdominal fat deposition, compromised immunity and decreases in memory and cognitive function. By combating these symptoms Rhodiola Rosea helps the body to get out of "fight or flight" mode and into a more balanced hormonal state. Chronic elevated cortisol levels are also associated with premature aging - making Rhodiola a helpful anti-aging compound as well.
Fatigue is a major problem today – most of which is caused by overwork, poor diet and consuming stimulants in excess. Rhodiola can help users overcome these obstacles by increasing mental elasticity, increasing cognitive response and helping to re-balance hormones responsible for metabolic activity like those produced by the thyroid. Rhodiola can increase workplace performance factors by decreasing fatigue as well as helping to restore natural sleep cycles for better productivity. Better sleep can mean better performance whether it pertains to your job or you are just trying to enjoy your free time. Rhodiola is a proven fatigue fighter.
Rhodiola can be a natural way to kickstart metabolic activity and boost strength and stamina during exercise or intense activity. Research has shown that Rhodiola can help lower oxidative damage by increasing red blood cell count, which can delay fatigue and improve athletic performance. The feeling of energy increase may be due to Rhodiola's ability to increase ATP synthesis which is important for daily cellular energy demands. Being able to train for longer periods and create increases in training volume is a proven to way to build muscle and strength. Whether you are plying a sport of just trying to get in shape Rhodiola can help you achieve your fitness goals.
Rhodiola may help you access fat stores during training and regular metabolic activities to accelerate fat loss. Some animal studies have shown a reduction in visceral or “white Fat” during rhodiola supplementation along with a caloric deficit and exercise. Rhodiola’s active ingredient Rosavin can stimulate the body’s production of a fat burning enzyme called Hormone Sensitive Lipase, which helps the body break down fat stored in the midsection. When you eat excess amounts of sugar and processed foods your body puts those extra calories away for a rainy day in and around your belly. Unfortunately, most folks don’t ever get around to using those calories and they hang around as ever-increasing pant or dress sizes. Combing regular exercise with Rhodiola supplementation can have a synergistic effect on fat burning as well as weight loss. If you want to lose weight and decrease body fat using Rhodiola can help maximize your body’s ability to mobilize and burn off that stubborn fat.
Rhodiola is most commonly taken as a dietary supplement in either an encapsulated powdered extract form or in a tincture. A tincture is an alcohol or glycerin-based solution containing the extract and is usually taken sublingually from a dropper several times a day. Most people find that taking capsules is a far more convenient method.
Typical Dosing for adults is between 200 and 700mg per day, although studies have been conducted with subjects taking up to 3000mg a day to combat stress without negative side effects. Always consult a doctor before taking any supplement if you are unsure of its dosing or interaction possibilities. Also, there is some evidence that there can be a synergistic effect when Rhodiola is combined with the Aryveduic herb Ashwagandha for increased athletic performance as well as sexual benefits. Both Ashwagandha and Rhodiola are in the adaptogen family of herbs and can have similar effects on hormone balance and stress management.
Rhodiola in capsule form is often taken with food or 15 minutes before a meal. Some users of encapsulated herbal powders report stomach irritation when taken without food, but this is individual to the user. Many herbs are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach to help increase absorption rates without the dilution of food in the stomach but again this is specific to the individual. If your digestive system can tolerate the capsules with no food, then take it that way. If you get an upset stomach, then just take your capsules with food. The key to any supplement regimen – Rhodiola included is consistency. Most herbs are to be taken either once or twice daily depending on dosage instructions. Positive effects from Rhodiola supplementation can be seen in as little as 2-3 days, but often 2-3 weeks is a correct window for noticeable results.
There a few potential yet uncommon side effects of taking Rhodiola, which are dry mouth and dizziness. Always check with your doctor about possible interactions with medication you may be taking. Herbal extracts are not as potent as drugs by any means, but unwanted interactions can still occur depending on the types of medications you may be taking and the number of herbs you supplement with.
If you don’t want to take capsules or tinctures and don’t mind a little extra work, then you can try making some Rhodiola Tea. First procure some dried and ground Rhodiola Root. Then steep the Roots in hot water for about 4 hours – though make sure the water is not boiling. You are trying to extract the active ingredients form the roots in a controlled manner. This can be mixed with Chamomile or other traditional tea flavors for taste. Enjoy!
