I was wary at first because I did not want to sand my brand new Spyder taillights. Tried Plasti-Dip Smoke but it ended up milky may be my skills either way I gave it two weeks and it had to go. I have to say all of the Plasti-Dip paint I've used is great and best of all it's tough but will easily peel off with no damage. That being said, I used some 400 grit sandpaper and water on the lenses. I put two coats of VHT Night-Shades on and that was dark enough for me. Added three coats of clear and these lights look like factory smoked lenses! Go light on the coats and the flash time will let you decide how dark you want to go. I highly recommend this product.

Update: Sorry I never noticed until I got a comment / question about the amount of VHT Nite-Shades I used. That brought up my review and I noticed that I'd attached a picture of the Plasti-Dip coated tail lights. I've now deleted that image and added two which actually show the Nite-Shades painted tail lights. Sorry for the bad shots but it was still daylight enough to have reflections everywhere. These are brighter than they look here with just the lights on and much brighter with the brake lights on.

I have wanted to do this ever since I got the car.
I think it is the most dramatic and cheapest modification anyone can do.
It only took me a few hours and I'm quite pleased with the results!
If you look at the pictures for this product, my car is the Black 4dr Infinti G35...

Seriously one of the easiest and cheapest modifications you can do to your vehicle. No drips, no spotting, and comes out looking evenly coated. Saved me $344, the price of a whole tinted tail light assembly.

Here's how I painted it, no sanding or clear coats needed:

███ 1. REMOVE TAIL LIGHT FROM VEHICLE
Easier than it seems. Youtube it if you have to. For the most part it's just 2-3 nuts securing it, then one main electrical wire you unhook / unclip. Then pull the tail light straight out, with a little force.

███ 2. CLEAN TAIL LIGHT WITH DISH SOAP
First clean with hot water, then dish soap, then hot water again, then towel dry.

███ 3. CLEAN WITH VINEGAR
This helps make sure there is no grease on the light. Towel dry again.

███ 4. MASK OFF REVERSE LIGHT
If you're so inclined. I used standard blue painters tape. Try not to touch the tail light any more than you have to. Clean one more time with vinegar to get rid of any finger prints or tape residue. Towel dry.

███ 5. SPRAY 1 LIGHT EVEN COAT OF PAINT
Start from top to bottom, then go bottom to top. Let dry for 10 minutes.

███ 6. SPRAY MULTIPLE COATS AS DESIRED
For all the coats following, I sprayed from top to bottom, bottom to top, twice. Allowing 10 minutes of dry time between each one. For the smoked effect like pictured on my Ford Edge, I only did 3 coats total. On my Hyundai Elantra (not pictured) I did a blackout look with 4 coats. Any more coats using my method might be too dark.

███ 7. LET DRY FOR AT LEAST 4 HOURS
Before handling and reassembling. According to bottle it fully cures within 24 hours.

VHT Night-Shades paint is an excellent product for those who want to get that expensive blackened tail light look for cheap. This product is also great for those of us who want that look, but can't find any dealers who make tail light covers for our year and make of autos. Using two light coats of this paint gets a nice, full coverage, and lets the maximum amount of light through when applying the brakes. Because you don't have to use a ton of this paint to get coverage, you can easily do 4-5 cars worth of lights per can of paint. Compairing $13 per can to $35 for covers, and even up to $250 for a full tail light assembly, how can you go wrong?

I tried the VHT nightshades over replacing my 99 Tahoe tail lights that were sun faded at the top..This was cheaper and I gave it a shot. I cleaned them really good but I did not sand them. I shot 3 coats of nightshade on them with 20 minutes in between each coat. Then I let that cure for 2 days. Then I cleaned them again and used a gloss clear coat (rattle can) I got from wal mart. I applied 6 coats with a wet sand using 1000 grit sandpaper in between each coat. Thats it. They turned out nice for me and it covered the sun fade I had going on. There are tons of youtube videos out there on HOW TO use this stuff. I took the chance of not sanding my tail lights and they came out fine. Honestly I cleaned mine with soap and warm water, dried them and then used White Vinegar and a soft cloth to finish up and I had no cracking. But that's your call. I hope this video helps you. Happy Shopping & Tinting!!

Stupidly happy with this. I used a 1500 grit wet sand to help with adherence, and taped off the parts I didn't want to smoke out. I can not stress enough, LIGHT EVEN COATS!! Quick passes, don't hold down the trigger the whole time. Take your time with this. I put 3 coats on the side tail lights, and 2 coats on the back end. Finished it up with a 2000 grit wet sand and a buff for a glossy look. It looks so freaking good!
