Does the engine need to be running to operate the compressor?
The compressor needs a constant 13.8 Volts for optimal performance, and that is only possible with the engine running.
What is duty-cycle?
It’s the maximum continuous run time of the compressor, expressed in % of 1 hour.
Is a direct-drive motor better than a gear-drive motor?
Direct-drive motors deliver power straight to the piston rod, it is quiet and reliable. Gear-driven motors have an extra layer of friction, creating a louder system that’s prone to rapid performance decline due to deteriorating gear teeth.

Choosing Between 12V Battery Clamps and Cigarette Lighter Plug: The Pros & Cons
The choice between the 88P (with alligator clips) and 85P and 84P models (with cigarette plug) comes down to preference. The 88P's motor draws more current, so it had to be equipped with alligator clips that connect to your vehicle's battery. The cigarette lighter plug models draw less current and can be accessed from your car's interior.

The ViAir 85P inflates tires FAST! It is a 12 VDC compressor (with max 15A to 20A draw), or about 240 Watts (~1/3 HP) max. It's not a 220 VAC 8 HP shop compressor, so it won't inflate you tire in 5 seconds. But compared to all the other 12 V compressors, this thing is KING! The more powerful ViAir compressors pull too much current for a cigarette lighter (they must use alligator clips direct to battery). For convenience (i.e. cigarette lighter power), the 85P things cannot be beat!
We've all tried the $15 el-cheapo compressors. Those things are actually WORSE than NOTHING at ALL! They give you a false sense of security.
The el-cheapo compressors are not only sooo sloooow when inflating a tire (take FOREVER), but they degrade over time (seals go bad, hose rots, etc.). So just when you need them most, on a cold dark road in the middle of no where, they let you down. When your tire goes flat, you foolishly think, "No problem; I've got my awesome $15 compressor I purchased at Harbor Fraud". Then you find out you should have spent a few more bucks and got the ViAir 85P. Couple this little compressor with a $5 tire repair/plug kit, at you are covered for 95 % of all tire problems in an emergency.
I paid around $45 for this a couple of years ago and was tickled with it. I just bought a 2nd one for my other car and two additional units for Christmas gifts. On my recommendation, a co-worker and several friends also purchased these compressors and couldn't be happier. Now, you can often find this on Amazon considerably discounted from that price. It also now comes with a great little zipper bag to keep it in! This is a nice quality bag that you'll actually use, not just some afterthought that will disintegrate with a few months. The bag has an interior pouch for small items (tire plugs, etc.). The built-in pressure gauge is a nice touch and seems pretty accurate (agrees with some of my other gauges to within a few psi). The high-quality brass screw-on hose end is one of the best features of the 85P. It works flawlessly and is super easy to use, even for soccer-moms and the non-mechanically inclined. No more crappy "clamp on" plastic hose connectors like cheap 1970's bicycle pumps that just won't seal. The ViAir hose has a nice feel to it and is braided-cloth covered for durability. The 12V power cable is long enough to plug into the cigarette lighter and still reach all four tires, even on relatively large vehicles. ViAir does sell an extension hose if you need it for some reason. The body of the compressor holds an inflation needle for sports balls, etc. This compressor has some heft to it and feels heavy enough to impress you. I don't know that there's a single thing I would change about this compressor. You are buying perfection!
These also makes AWESOME gifts for people that are hard to buy for. From college/high-school students, to the business executive, house-wife, pro-mechanic, to Grandpa Jones, anyone would be pleased to receive this as a gift. And they will think of you next time it saves their butt and they don't have to ride home in the cab of a tow truck at night with a 300 lb gorilla they just met. I should also mention this (for those who think, "just put the spare tire on"). Up here in the north, spare tires are often mounted underneath vehicles. This means the retaining mechanism is exposed to salt roads in the winter and inevitably seizes up. I've seen two vehicles now where no amount of prying and praying would get the spare tire loose.
With the ViAir 85P and a cheap tire plug kit, you'll be on your way in 5 min (even on a cold winter road) without laying on your back on a snow/ice covered road in -15 F weather, trying to wrestle a spare tire loose. When putting a spare on, you also have the fun of breaking lug nuts loose, etc. Avoid the pain and buy this ViAir 85P compressor!

I had 2 concerns purchasing this compressor. First, I did not think I would like the screw on tire chuck, especially for my motorcycle tires where the valve stems are more difficult to get at and in fact I purchased an angled chuck for that anticipated problem. Well, the angled chuck I bought was unnecessary. This screw on chuck is easier, works better and is more secure than the typical clamp type chuck. My next concern was that the unit is powered by an auto 12 v aux outlet requiring a minimum of 15 amps/180 volts. I was not able to figure out how many amps and volts go to my aux outlet and figured that an a/c plug in unit would have more power. Bottom line....no problem. Have used the unit plugged in to 2 different vehicles w engine on and have not blown any fuses. I think just about any modern vehicle would be able to handle the power reqmts. If I had found a good, low cost ac model I would have gone with that. I put air in the tires at home in my garage 95%, portability was not a reqmt. Anyway this one is very portable.
PROS:
1. Well built quality unit, not a piece of junk that won't last.
2. Inflates tires fast and is not excessively loud and can inflate up to 60 psi.
3. Built in pressure gauge surprisingly accurate....reads 3-5 psi high...in the ballpark (to get accurate reading of gauge switch power off. I overinflate about 5 psi and then use a more accurate gauge to bleed air to accurate pressures).
4. I'm sold on the screw on chuck.
5. Comes with a carrying case (cheap and small).....bonus!!
CONS:
1. 12 v plug is too short. Barely able to fill right rear camper van tire plugged in to dash aux outlet. (So....that's why they offer a 12' extension package for $8 more....)
2. Running the car while using the compressor is more annoying that if the car was not running....to me.
Best air compressor I've ever owned. IMPORTANT: You MUST have the car running for this compressor to get enough power and not drain your battery. I believe this is true of all portable 12v compressors, so if your not getting enough power to your compressor, definitely start the engine and run the vehicle while using it.
The compressor isn't too loud, and the gauge on it seems accurate, which is a relief because I'm never quite sure with these things. It feels sturdy, not like it's going to fall apart after a few uses, and it’s small enough to keep in the trunk without taking up much space. I’ve used it on my SUV and my husband's truck, and it worked like a charm for both.
It's not perfect though. If you’re doing more than one tire, you might have to give it a break to cool down, as it's not meant for heavy-duty, continuous use. That’s not a huge deal for me, but something to keep in mind if you think you'll need it for more intensive tasks. Overall, I'd say the Viair 85P is a great buy for the average driver. It’s convenient, reliable, and gives you a bit of extra peace of mind when you're out on the road.

The 84P is well built, doesn’t look or feel cheap and works as expected without blowing the electronic fuse on the Tesla.
Pros:
1. Quick to fill. It took 18 seconds to pump a tire up from 38 psi to 42 psi.
2. The press on chuck works. It is somewhat hard to press the lever but it never felt like it was going to break off. Once locked down it is very secure.
3. The unit doesn’t dance around the floor when running.
4. The needle on gauge doesn’t bounce around when the compressor is on like some reviews state. The pressure gauge is relatively accurate – showing about 2 psi over actual. Not a big deal.
5. Not too noisy for a portable air compressor. It’s not ultra quiet, but also not deafening like some 12V compressors.
Cons:
1. The included bag fits the air compressor perfectly but it is a little frustrating to coil the electrical cable and air hose nicely into the bag.
Overall, the Viair 84P works for the Tesla Model 3 and is great value for a quality unit at half the price of the Tesla 12V air compressor, and is not much more than budget 12V air compressors. I don’t know if it will blow the fuse in other cars with 15A fuses on their accessory port/cigarette lighter. However, since most passenger car tires require about 30psi and the 84P is rated as requiring a maximum of 14A at 30psi, it likely will be okay.
