This thing does what you want it to do. I really dont know what all the bad reviews are. It captures the analog signal and can capture the S video out also. Its not going to make your home movies 1080p. They end up on Mac at 720 which is nothing to sneeze at. I watch mine on plex and it works out great. If the VHS is older the quality will be lower even tho the rendering is 720p.

Its not rocket science and its not going to play magic with old VHS tapes. Its just a capture device. If youw ant a quality restoration then you will need someone to do the magic in Final cut for you. This will get from point a to point b and then your on your own after that.

I would spend way more for it and it has done 3 days now of videos with little pauses in between. Unless this thing breaks in a month then it will have served its purpose well. Will update if something changes.

A very good and affordable video capture device

I am very impressed with this little box. I haven't heard of Honestech before but they've put together a very affordable and very easy to use capture device that will convert your old video tapes to a standard digital format.

Set up is simple: plug one end of the included composite cables to the outputs on the VCR and the other into the Vidbox. Then just connect the Vidbox to the Mac via the included USB cable, install the software, and you're off and running. There really isn't much to configure: the software will guide you through a step-by-step process and at the end will present a file that you can have transferred to iTunes, iMovie, or iDVD. The recorded file will also remain in a directory off your home directory so you can copy it off to an external hard drive or some other device.

My only gripe is that it may not offer enough flexibility for more advanced users. I couldn't find any options for changing the default storage directory nor could I adjust the brightness or contrast of the video signal prior to recording.

Those issues aside this is a simple and inexpensive way to preserve some of those old videotapes before it's too late.

This is amazing. I was a little skeptical that this would work, but wasn't comfortable sending away my irreplaceable VHS tapes to be converted to digital files. This is incredibly easy to use and produces perfect reproductions of my VHS tapes. You simply use the included red/white/yellow cord to connect it to your VCR's output jacks, and use the other included USB cord to connect it from the device to you computer's USB port, click to select that you are using the red/white/yellow cord (or your other choice is the "S jack" cord), select how long your VCR tape is (I just set it to 2 hours and then it is easy to stop it sooner if your recording ends earlier), choose what folder you'd like to save the digital file on your computer, then push play on your VCR, and record on your computer screen. You can watch the tape on your computer as it records. You can also watch tapes this way without recording. It is a great little device! I then open the file in iMovie, edit out the blank spaces, enhance the quality and save.

Finally! I am using this to transfer dozens of my mom's old VHS tapes to my computer and then to an external hard drive. I don't have a disc drive for the software CD, but the website has a link for the software download, then you just type in your registration number printed on the disc envelop once you receive the product. Download was a snap. It's super easy to use and works exactly how it is described. I can see and hear the playback, select the amount of time for which I wish to record, and throw it into iMovie if I want to edit it at all. So far, I have been able to transfer 20+ videos with ease. It's been a really fun project! I'm so glad Vidbox exists and works so well. I've already recommended it to others. This VHS conversion is an awesome gift idea, by the way!

The VIDBOX Video Conversion for Mac is a simple device that assists your conversion of old VHS/mini DV/etc tapes into a digital file. Bottom line, it does work, it is simple and I do recommend it. After opening the box and figuring out the cables it was simple to install and get going. My initial issue was my video camera no longer wanted to work (Canon ZR45MC). After fixing it and getting it working (all for free) I proceeded to try out the VIDBOX. The problem was it no longer worked. I followed all the directions and than reached out for advice from Honesttech. They were fantastic in their help and quick to respond. Turns out their cable went bad, I had an old one I dug up, and it was up and running. The only reason for a 4 star, is because of the cable that went bad out of the box. If I did not have an old cable laying around I wouldn't have been able to get this working as quickly.
