Its not rocket science and its not going to play magic with old VHS tapes. Its just a capture device. If youw ant a quality restoration then you will need someone to do the magic in Final cut for you. This will get from point a to point b and then your on your own after that.
I would spend way more for it and it has done 3 days now of videos with little pauses in between. Unless this thing breaks in a month then it will have served its purpose well. Will update if something changes.
Set up is simple: plug one end of the included composite cables to the outputs on the VCR and the other into the Vidbox. Then just connect the Vidbox to the Mac via the included USB cable, install the software, and you're off and running. There really isn't much to configure: the software will guide you through a step-by-step process and at the end will present a file that you can have transferred to iTunes, iMovie, or iDVD. The recorded file will also remain in a directory off your home directory so you can copy it off to an external hard drive or some other device.
My only gripe is that it may not offer enough flexibility for more advanced users. I couldn't find any options for changing the default storage directory nor could I adjust the brightness or contrast of the video signal prior to recording.
Those issues aside this is a simple and inexpensive way to preserve some of those old videotapes before it's too late.
Guess what? Works perfectly! Did a test drive with an old Dallas Cowboys VHS tape and the results were as good as one can expect with a 22 year old tape. I would like to find an "S" Cable in my bags of cables instead of a composite RCA version but other than that it worked exactly as it was supposed to. Consider me a happy customer! And thanks to the folks at VIDBOX for their quick responses. That earned the 5 stars as mush as anything.
