I had the Honestech 8.0 version for years until the driver crashed on me otherwise it worked nice but there were some things that bother me. I mainly use this to transfer records to disc. 1. The start but had a 2 to 3 second lag once you clicked it, so timing was everything! It was okay for records made in the 60's but some records in the 80's didn't have the 3 second lag and I had to put the needle on the record and release when the start button on the Vidbox was about to come up. On this newer version once you click start, it starts recording, GREAT! 2. On the 8.0 version it had what I can best describe as a static pop when you listen to it on the CD, which I guess was cause by the janky start button! Now that it starts recording right after you click it you don't here that static pop noise at the end of the recording which is GREAT! 3. This newer version doesn't create WMP files even though the instructions say it does. It creates MP3 files even though I still use Windows Media Player! I had to go into WMP to get it to recognize the MP3 file name in order for my recording to go into WMP. No big deal but maybe it would have been nice to me to have an option in Vidbox to choose either one. 4. It would have been great it they had created a number scale for the volume control! Say for instance I have a low volume recording I can raise the volume up to 6, for a high volume recording I can lower it down to 4 instead of fiddling with it! As it is you just raise the sound bar up and down and try to remember where you had it. Overall, this version is better than the Honestech 8.0 version!!

This was super easy to set up and use. I use "Easy mode" since i'm not really interested in converting to DVD. I just convert directly to MP4. I do wish the preview screen was bigger in easy mode though.

This made VHS to digital VERY easy! Quality is nice, and software is not a lot of finessing. I tried a few others that rely on a free software but found issues. This just worked, gave a maximum VHS resolution (most are lower than VHS). And didn't have any issues with Macrovision on old VHS movies I own, that never make it to DVD.

I purchased the Vidbox video conversion package to digitize family home movies that were originally recorded on a VHS camcorder. The setup and use of this package is simple, and that's both the good and the bad. Setup takes a matter of minutes, and the software needs no explanation. Unfortunately, the capture and encoding process is automated by the software, and while you can choose a general encoding method (e.g., DVD structure, MPEG-1, MPEG-2), there are no options within these methods to fine tune the encoding process. Most troubling is the fact that the software incorporates its own de-interlacing algorithm, which isn't that good. Visual evidence of poor de-interlacing is present. It would be much better if the de-interlacing algorithm can be turned on or off within the software. This would allow for use of an independent (and better) de-interlacing scheme. In my opinion, this is the greatest factor affecting video quality in this package.

This gets the job done most of the time, but as some other reviews state there are times when it just fails. That sucks because you have wasted the time waiting for that video to play through. I have found that it seems to work best when I exit and restart after each video I transfer. A bit of a pain, but gets the job done.

I'm impressed with this little device. I worked in broadcast television back when tape was still king, which left me very familiar with the peculiarities of videotape, both broadcast quality and VHS.

Most of my VHS home movies are now over 25 years old, which is well past their prime. I've taken care of them, but I didn't know how much deterioration they've suffered (if any). I figured I had one shot at converting them, so I wanted to make it count: I wanted the highest quality conversion at the best price.

The Vidbox was over twice the cost of the nearest device I considered, but I bought it with cautious optimism and I have to say I'm happy with the purchase.

The Vidbox hardware is dead simple: the tiny box has an S-video input, composite video input, stereo audio RCA inputs, and a USB output. The S-video standard produces a slightly higher quality image than composite. My VCR doesn't support S-video output, so I was unable to test it at this level of quality.

My tapes turned out to be in remarkably good condition and the Vidbox pretty much maintained this quality. The sharpness, color, saturation and audio levels of the encoded movies were good, especially considering I was limited to the composite video signal. Scenes with a lot of fast movement, such as quick camera pans or zooms, exhibit considerable blurring, but this is more an issue with the MPEG-2 codec than the device itself.

I previously paid a professional video conversion service to convert two VHS tapes to DVD, and the difference in quality between those conversions and the movies produced by Vidbox is honestly negligible.

The included video conversion software is also good and it's positively dummy-proof. I didn't bother using the installation disc and instead downloaded the software from the Vidbox website to ensure I had the most recent version. Install the application, authorize it with the key printed on the CD sleeve, then follow the simple 3-step process to start recording. Grandmothers could do this, seriously.

That said, the software has room for improvement. The application window is not resizable, and the region which displays the video is tiny, roughly half the resolution of the source signal (I estimate 320 x 240 pixels). This is undesirable not only because it's inconveniently small, but it also produces a subtle psychological effect: my live VHS signal looked razor sharp in this tiny window, but noticeably less sharp when I played back the converted movies full-screen. It's just an illusion -- there's not actually any perceivable change in quality -- but it's jarring. Doubling the size of this region, or allowing the app to be maximized, would fix the problem.

The software also doesn't support any degree of fine tuning. I'd like to be able to at least set the bit rate in order to improve quality, or choose a preferred codec. These options could easily be tucked away in an "Advanced Settings" menu.

The application does support conversion to MP4, but it comes at a cost: Videos are always first encoded as MPEG-2, so converting to MP4 means a second round of encoding, which is a one-generation loss of quality (two generations from the original tape).

I haven't used the burn-to-DVD functionality so I can't speak to its performance. DVDs are always encoded as MPEG-2, so there should be no additional generational loss there.

PROS
Good quality conversion; my new videos are basically as good as the source material.
Incredibly easy to use, and the composite and USB cables are included.

CONS
Software is great for basic conversion, but lacks advanced settings for power users.

TIP
Be sure to adjust the tracking on your VCR for the best possible picture. Some later model VCRs do this automatically. This can help get rid of static that hovers near the top or bottom of the screen.

Ultimately, I'm happy with the Vidbox. It does what it promises and I'm satisfied with the quality of my movies.

It gives a good quality reproduction of the videos.
Once set up it’s easy to use.
I also used it to convert a lot of old audio cassettes to digital format. You have to set how long the conversion will be and ensure you set the conversion for longer than what you think the audio or video actually is, or it will cut off the last part. If you set it for longer than what you need, you just need to be there when the audio/video you are converting ends, so you can stop the vidbox at the same time (and avoid a larger digitized file than necessary).
The audio formats you can convert to are limited, so I had to use third party software later, to convert the audio files to the format that I wanted (which turned out to be quite easy).
It does the conversions in real time so if you have 50 hours of video or audio to convert it takes 50 hours to do it.
Would be nice if you could edit the movies after you convert them but this package doesn’t allow you to do that.
