VIKINGS BLADE ‘The Emperor’ Review

TLDR: Nirvana, maybe.

I really want to make sure everyone here understands that while I’m very partial to this brand by now, and that you’ve seen me heap praise on them, I don’t get one single thing from VIKINGS BLADE. Nada. Nothing. If I ever did, I’d be very up front about that, but as it is, this is a completely honest an off-the-cuff observation of the razor as I know it right now (I’ll be updating this tomorrow).

Okay, now that the official ‘I don’t work for them or get kickbacks’ statement is out of the way, lets get on with the observations.

Close your eyes and take yourself back to your best Christmas; the one you were most excited about. You just knew that you’d be having the greatest day ever, tomorrow. Tomorrow… it seemed so very far away, and you were just giddy with excitement. That’s me. Tonight. But the day didn’t start out that way. But let’s back up almost a month, because that’s where this all begins.

One of my most treasured friends, a big ‘ol Texas boy had a birthday coming up. He’s a good bit younger than I am, but we share a lot of common ground, and he’s recently become a daddy, and I adore his wife, she’s an incredible person. I can only imagine how much I’d dote on his little one if I were nearer. This is a beautiful family. I suppose I am doling out praise to show how much he means to me. He’s a good man. In fact, he’s a member of this group.
Anyway, being that it was the occasion of his birthday, and knowing his overt love of all things masculine I was searching my brain trying to dig up something he might enjoy. That’s when it dawned on me that a razor might be the deal. Very masculine, and very much something that if you like, becomes something you have for ages and continues to be useful and enjoyable.

What razor? I’ve already gotten a couple of different razors by this point though I was still figuring all of this out, but I had some idea about what things to look for. I know what makes an adequate one and what makes a nice one. I have discovered the VIKINGS BLADE and since he’s genuinely a descendant of the Vikings (ethnicity, not football team) I can’t resist landing on that brand. Hmmm… what to get… Awww hell, why not? I go for the Emperor. Why? I dunno, it just seemed like one that’d be worth having; a really nice gift. And in the grand scheme of things, it isn’t really all that expensive. A worthy investment, I think. I pull the trigger.

Secretly, I kept wondering what that one was all about. I bought the Chieftain JR and loved it. Then I bought the Baili Classic Long Handle which is identical to the VIKINGS BLADE Godfather (which sells for more than 3x as much), and I’ve recently purchased their Vulcan, which is, in a word, incredible. On a whim, I succumbed to the curiosity and ordered an Emperor for myself. I really wasn’t overly excited about getting it as I loved my Vulcan so much. To be honest, I almost forgot I’d ordered it and checked on something else, from work, when I noticed that it was supposed to deliver today. “Hmm, well, we’ll see” I thought, and dismissed it.

When I walked through the front door I saw the silicone whiskey ice cube molds that I’d ordered (I’ll be putting that to good use in a bit), a bunch of surprisingly robust metal decanter labels, and the box for the Emperor. There it was. Something in me lurched a bit, you know, when you know you have a treat waiting but you hold off and savor the anticipation. And yes, I fully recognize that I’m a weirdo for getting excited about a razor. Shut up.
I wash out the cube trays and fill them, then walk them out to the garage to the freezer. I unpack my stuff from the day, put my keys in their assigned cubby along with my sunglasses. I give the pups a little love and say hello to the boys, who know full well what that box contains and are completely aware of my recent obsession with razors. They don’t quite get it, but that’s okay. I’m fine with this. They have theirs and they seem happy enough with them.
But there sit I. Now looking at the box. Okay, let’s do this. I walk over and pick the box up. Whoa. This box is *heavy*. Why is it so heavy? What’s in there? I sit down at my little rough-reclaimed wood table, flip on the overhead light, and begin unboxing. The design on the box is different than the Vulcan, and I’m impressed by that. It’s a bit of nice art. It doesn’t really amount to anything except for the experience of opening it for the first time, and I really, truly appreciate when manufacturers do that. It really does make things special for a person like me who’s excited to be doing this.

Sliding the inner box out of the outer jacket finds me greeted with a nicely crafted and finished brown faux leather box with a magnetic flap to keep it shut. A brown ribbon protrudes by which to pull the flap up. I accept the invitation and pull it open and what I reveal is… it’s just beautiful. I am not writing hyperbolically when I tell you this is truly a work of art. The Vulcan is a beautiful razor, but this is in a completely different class. The most striking difference is its frosted finish; it is matte silver. It looks for all the world like a warrior’s weapon which has been crafted by a very skilled smith. I admire it for a moment, in the box, and observe the markings on the butterfly doors as well as the adjustment knob at the top of the handle just under the base.

I read the label affixed to the top of the box, with the handle bright in the dark foam beneath. Again, I’m enjoying the experience of this (though to be honest I think they could have done better with that label; it was an afterthought among the rest of the kit). Once read, I decide to lift this out. I’m fully prepared to be deeply disappointed. There’s no way this razor is as heavy as the box suggests; surely there’s some hidden weight in the box. As I put the box in one hand, and lift the razor free with the other, I’m absolutely floored by the realization that it is, indeed, the weight of the razor which has suddenly shifted from the box hand to the now razor-equipped one. And the handle is very thick. And I can tell straight away that the grip simply won’t be compromised in the slipperiest of situations. My primary criticism of the Chieftain JR is that the chrome plating rounds the edges, which ultimately compromises the grip (though I’ve never dropped it). This has no such compromise. The thickness of the handle coupled with the sharply checked and slightly frosted finish (which is quite similar to my SUPPLY razor) ensures that you won’t be dropping this thing unless you intend to, and you’d never intentionally drop something so handsome.
You’ve heard me go on about razor handle length. It doesn’t mean much at all when you’re shaving, yet the mind does tend to want a longer handle for whatever reason. This is longer than the Chieftain JR but shorter than the Vulcan and the Baili Classic Long Handle. And a good bit shorter than the Vikings Revolution razor. It is dead in the middle of handle length but is far and away the fattest of the bunch. Frankly, this feels like the Goldilocks handle; it’s just right. It’s better than right, but there aren’t adequate words for that and I’d feel a little absurd describing how much I enjoy the fat shaft in my hand. Yeah, I know you’re thinking it. No worries. $10 is $10.

The adjustment runs smoothly, and it is interesting to see how it articulates the head (I’m not helping myself any, am I?). It has a rather large head (seriously, stop) and is quite sturdy. As I fingered the adjustment on the bottom the butterfly opened (see, told you to stop) and I was amazed at the smooth, precise, fluidity. The Vulcan is a very well put-together razor handle, but this… This is completely in its own league. The Vulcan is a top of the line Toyota, but this is well into the top of the line Lexxus. They’re related, to be sure, but the engineering is something completely superior. This was a handle that was truly engineered by people who were talented and really enjoyed this work. It shows. It is art.

So now that I’ve gushed all over this thing, I’ll tell you how it shaves. Tomorrow. I want to let my beard grow in, until I have the normal shave length before writing an actual shaving review on it. But for now, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vikings Blade EMPEROR AUGUSTUS adjustable DE Razor is AWESOME!!!
By John A Rosino Jr on January 8, 2021
The Vikings Blade Emperor AUGUSTUS edition adjustable DE razor, shaves better than it looks! With that said; It looks Awesome!!!

For the record; I’m not an employee of Vikings Blade or any affiliate company of theirs, or related to any person that works there. I’m not being payed $$$ for or endorsed by Vikings Blade. This is not a paid promotional advertisement, or a sponsored advertisement, in anyway, shape, or form. This razor was not gifted to me by Vikings blade or any person. I purchased this razor with my own money. I purchased this razor because I wanted to buy my first adjustable DE safety razor. This is also not a paid promotion, in any way shape or form. These are my own thoughts and opinions based on my own personal experience, with this adjustable DE safety razor.

With that disclosure said, and out-of-the-way; It’s a gorgeous handsome masculine razor. A very manly razor in my opinion. With a lot of weight and hefty with great balance. I prefer heftier or heavier razors. It seems like they do all the work and you need very little pressure while shaving.
I think any man would be proud to own and shave with this razor!
I know I am very proud to own and shave with this razor!
This razor is also a great value for the money.
It’s like owning twelve DE razors all in one. There’s nine adjustment settings that are numbered 1-9. Changing the adjustment settings 1-9 move the safety bar up or down increasing or decreasing the angle of reveal and blade exposure.

A helpful hint, make sure you have the adjustment setting on MAX when loading or remove a DE razor blade. The Twist To Open (TTO) doors move with the adjustable safety bars when the TTO doors are opened.

Adjustment Settings 1,2,3, are mild aggression levels, or blade angle reveal; these settings would be best for beginning DE wet shavers, or people with thin beards, sensitive skin, or for those people that maybe want to shave every day.
Adjustment settings 4, 5, 6, are a medium aggression levels or blade angle reveal; these settings are for more advanced experience DE wet shavers, or for people with less sensitive skin and courser beards, or people who want to shave every other or two or three days between shaves.
Adjustment settings 7, 8, 9, and Max are aggressive aggression levels or blade angle reveal; these settings are for very experienced or very advanced DE wet shavers, or for people with very thick and or course beards, or for people who want to shave once a week. It could also be used for people who want to look for a close to straight razor shave, but without the maintenance, stropping, and honing that goes along with a straight razor shaving or expense ($$$) of the straight razor itself, and the accoutrements, and the cost ($$$) of the accoutrements, that are required for straight razor shaving. Also the learning curve that goes with straight razor shaving. It’s not like a straight razor though, by any means! It could also be, for wet shavers like myself, who don’t want to spend the amount of time, like the time required for stropping the straight razor, on the leather and canvas strop, as well as the pre-shave face prep and added products that goes along with a proper straight razor shave.
But it’s more aggressive than my Muhle R-41 German made, open comb DE razor, on max setting in my opinion. The Muhle R-41 is a very aggressive razor though. But, it cannot be adjusted. Which can be a problem sometimes on a 3 or 4 pass shave. The Vikings Blade Emperor can be adjusted though; being an adjustable razor, lol.

The safety bar also has two sides one smooth, one mildly scalloped not quite an open comb though. This is why I said between the 9 adjustment levels and the two safety bars Sides and the constant flow in between numbers, (There’s a continuous movement of the safety bar between each adjustment number, while adjusting this razor. It’s not like it locks in between each adjustment number) ; it’s like shaving with 12 different razors, in one awesome, handsome, masculine, convenient, well manufactured package!

This is my first adjustable DE razor. I have nothing to compare it to, as far as adjustable DE razors go. Except Straight Razors, Single edge razors SE, and other non-adjustable double edge DE razors.
I have about 11 shave ready straight razors, 2 Single edge SE razors, and this being my fourth DE razor. I’ve been wet shaving with the DE razors since I was 13 years old. I’m 52 now soon to be 53. I’ve used cartridge razors such as the Gillette track 2, the Gillette Mach 3, and Gillette fusion. As well as electric shavers, when I was a teenager and into my early 20s. I would consider myself to be in an advanced or experienced wet shaver.

Vikings Blade Emperor Augustus is definitely a five star razor in many categories.
Build construction. Value for the money. Ease-of-use. Adjustability. Performance. Weight, of the razor, I prefer a heavier heftier razor in my opinion. Balance. And let’s not forget the looks and finish of this razor; it’s stunning!
This Vikings Blade Emperor AUGUSTUS edition DE razor shaved so smooth, and silky! BSS shave, (Baby Smooth Shave).
My first shave with the Emperor Augustus razor; I made four passes, with a relathering after each pass.
I had 7 days of beard growth. I used a brand new Feather hi stainless double edge DE Japanese Blade. Yes, I keep track of how shaves or times I’ve used each blade.
First pass: With the grain (WTG). Inaugural pass. Settings: 7-8-9. Trial run.
Second pass: Cross the grain (XTG). Settings: 6-5-4.
Third pass: Against the grain (ATG). Settings: 3-2-1.
Fourth pass: Touch up (TU).
Setting: 3.
I’ve decided that future shaves with this razor, are going to be: (Depending on how many days of beard growth I have).
First pass (WTG): 9.
Second pass (XTG): 6.
Third pass (ATG): 3.
Fourth pass (TU): 1. These adjustment numbers on the Emperor Augustus razor, would be adjusted down if I were to decide to shave more often.
I highly recommend VIKINGS BLADE Emperor Augustus adjustable DE razor for someone who is looking for the ONE razor that can do it all.
Thank you Vikings Blade for such a fantastic, affordable, adjustable DE razor!
Five stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

EVALUACION RASURADA CON RASTRILLO VIKINGS BLADE THE EMPEROR ADJUSTABLE SAFETY RAZOR
Sábado 3 de Septiembre, 2022: El rastrillo llego dentro de plazo, bien empacado, y sin daños a los empaques. El rastrillo se ve en perfectas condiciones, y con muy buena presentación. No parece tener defecto alguno.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Razor but there a few things to take note!
Reviewed in Singapore 🇸🇬 on November 5, 2020
Its a good razor my first time paying for one this much, to be honest I was ready to be let down by it cause I read all the negative reviews and good ones just to make my final decision before buying it, so I told myself since I liked the colour of this product and its heavy, so I watched a few videos from some youtubers reviewing this product and I told myself it gotta be quality right so I took a chance and buy it.

5 days later, its here, its now I have hope for it to be good and maybe if there is a flaw I could do something about it and not send it back. First when I open saw and held it I was like this is it boys we here we have it, so I tested everything from the razor reset function TTO function the adjustable head to see if it moves properly when adjusting the knobs and I notice something immediately it clicked, this dank thing needs some wd40 3in1 >w> and I know people gone say thats bad but trust me the thing feels klunky and not smooth its obvious you gotta oil it right? So I oiled it tap it dry and then I went to give it a nice soap wash and BAM!!! that thing feels like opening a brand new door that has been oiled to perfection on its hinges creaks and cracks of every opening I could find to sneak a few drip of oil in it. So obviously now everything is working you gotta shave right you still gotta feel da magic, so I had 5 pack of blades I like the Gillette Silver Blues, which I love and a few others I use along from time to time and today happens to be the day I tried voskhod for the first time and my starting shave with it was at settings 7 and following it with settings 4 and 3 on aggressiveness I did the 3 Pass Shave and some touch up clean pass at settings 3.

Boi lemme tell ya this thang gewd man its the first time I shaved so smooth I had no cuts no zinging no stinging on applying Proraso Red Aftershave I was so surprise I told myself I am shaving everyday from now on to make myself happy. This happens to be the best purchase I've made this year and I will never forget it plus I hadn't gone for the Vikings Blade The Crusader I would have definitely bought the Vikings Blade Emperor Augustus Edition. ;)
