First, getting the zipper started and zipping it up, which I feared might be difficult in either case, is actually pretty easy. The zipper starts easily if you just line it up, as with any zipper really. And then zipping it shut while cables are not wanting to be constrained inside is very easy anyway. So, that’s nice!
My rating was reduced from a full 5 for a couple reasons, though.
First, the seam is not attractive, and it’s fairly large. It’s not as easy to hide as I’d expect, and it requires more adjustment to hide it than I expected or am happy with now. It’s possible, but if it gets kicked or moved by tension from a cable, it’ll easily move so that the unattractive seam is visible again. It would be better if the seam part wasn’t so prominent, so it was easier to hide.
The other down-side for me relates to the plastic clips used to connect two (or as many as you want) in a chain. It’s nice to be able to do that, by the way, but for one thing, the place where they’re connected doesn’t look so great since there’s a bit of a gap, which will be more obvious the more the thing isn’t running perfectly the straight. I have a couple attached in a place, for example, where it bends a little, and that makes the seam obvious. I’m using these basically for a couple reasons: (1) to make it safer by binding up cables that I used to stumble over now and then, and (2) to make the area more attractive where I have cables impossible to hide completely.
The first function is fulfilled wonderfully! The second is partially fulfilled, but given the “hiding the seam” issue mentioned above, and then the visible seam between multiple pieces in a chain issue, limit the degree to which it makes the area more attractive to some extent.
I love how you can easily cut into it to make a hole wherever you want on it so one cable can exit before the end. I have one device that requires that, actually, and it really tidies everything up as well as allowing that taught cable to be inserted for most of the length of this rather than having to be separate, reducing the purpose of making the area look nice. Now, all the cables in a very visible area fit within one chain of these, and I’m surprised just how much It improves the look and overall “feel” of the area. For whatever reason, it makes a huge difference to have all the cables running there inside these. I would expect most people would feel the same after getting your cables out of view (mostly) as well as out of the way.
A last thing worth mentioning (although I could mention at least a couple more “pros”) is the wonderful feature of being able to connect multiple pieces not only in a chain, but also in a manner so as to basically double the space available for your cables. While it can hold a few fairly thick cables (such as typical computer power cords, or 16 gauge), you might need to put many more cables, in which case you can accomplish that with these simply by connecting 2 or more along the long edge.
Anyway, overall I’m pleased with these (I bought eight, or two 4-packs, btw). But I just felt it wasn’t great enough to get a full 5-star review for the reasons given above. Still, I wouldn’t say not to get them for this reason. It is, however, hopefully a message the manufacturer will get somehow (possibly by becoming aware of constructive criticism from reviews here?). The seam could be made to be easier to hide, and not so large in the first place (or maybe laying flat more or closing up more when zipped?). And perhaps there’s a way to make the place where they connect in a serial chain more continuous, such as an extending flap or something (I don’t know how exactly, but I bet a clever designer/engineer could figure it out).
An afterthought worth mentioning: The clips that connect 2 that are in a chain are plastic. I’ve broken LOTS of these on other objects, such as a backpack and fannypack, due to accidentally stepping on them. While I haven’t had these things under review here long enough to find out what’ll happen, I do fear that someday I or someone else will accidentally step on the plastic connectors, breaking them such that they couldn’t be repaired. A great thing is that they aren’t very visible being black on a black background (looks good for that reason), but that also means they aren’t visible enough for someone to know to avoid stepping down right on one. I fully expect that ot happen one day, which is another reason I forgot to include above that caused me to give this a 4 instead of 5 star rating. The plastic is not super strong, so it’d gain points if it was a harder/stronger and thus more durable plastic (although this type of connector relies on being able to be flexible, so that’s probably not even possible), by it being some other material that won’t break when stepped upon, or by it being another type of connector entirely. Note that it’s likely that you’d have these on your floor, so it seems inevitable to me that they’ll be getting broken due to shoe/boot attack at some point. They’ll still be usable, but then using them in a chain will reveal even more of the cables you’re trying to hide than can already be a minor problem even when clasped together with the single clip available to do so.
Oh yeah, and lastly, I find the price to be great, making some “not perfect” aspects of it easy to excuse!
I applied the whole lot of them to my somewhat crazy cable network that connects my PC to a three-monitor array and host of peripherals. They came through in a big way, tightening up large numbers of cords, including multiple thick power cables. The zippers were a bit tricky to start, but as soon as they bit the sleeves pulled everything together and they look amazing.
A feature that I really like, but admittedly am not using, is that you can use the clips on each end to tether the sleeves together if you're covering a single long section of cabling to create a long super-sleeve.
I'm a huge fan of these. I picked up this set at a discount, but I'm ordering another at full price because I love them and need a few more to finish off the rest of my media room. They look great, they fit great and they work perfectly. Leaps and bounds beyond zip ties!
