Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

Graphic for determining the right size HDTV for your room

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I bought this TV at Costco right when it came out and have been using it in my bedroom for a few weeks. The TV is great in terms of size and picture quality and especially inputs which is why I bought it.

That said there are three problems for me.

The first is minor and that is that the bezel lights up to show the vizio logo and touch buttons. The light is quite bright and does not dim while you are watching the TV so it is pretty distracting, especially the logo which is large.

The second is my main problem and that is that the TV is just too loud. I use it in my bedroom and, when it is quiet, a volume of 1 is bordering on too loud. If you kick it up to 2 or 3 it is REALLY loud. A volume of 10 or more is ear-shattering even when not in a quiet room. This is very strange and seems almost like some sort of software bug where the entire volume range is shifted to the left. HDMI inputs having basically no signal loss are even louder than the A/V and Component inputs.

The third problem is that this TV doesn't seem to have a zoom function to allow letter-boxed 4:3 shows to fill the screen. This is a problem if you are using any video sources where this can occur (I have it hooked up to a TiVo series2 for instance)

So I really want to like this TV but the volume problem is becoming a deal-breaker for me. I tried contacting customer support by email and got no response as well so if that sort of thing matters to you take that into consideration.

The reception on antenna is very fuzzy. Even with local station. And I set it up properly. I replaced my old analog tube TV with it in a BR. So unless you have cable connect in the spot u are wanting to use it , be wary

I bought this TV refurbished and had nothing but problems with it. When ever it works, it works wonderfully, but now it doesn't. A few days after it was delivered, the LEDs started flickering on and off and eventually crapping out when I was playing Xbox. I thought that the outlet it was plugged into was at fault for being too unstable and eventually the TV began working fine when I plugged it into another one. Fast foward to college a month later, after coming back from home over the weekend, when I turned it on, the LEDs wouldn't work. I tried turning it on and off, unplugging it and replugging it, and switching outlets, but still there was a black screen even though it was on. When I decided to bang it a little on the drawer it was on, the LEDs flickered on for like a second. I kept banging it until it was completely on, but it would always shutoff over any small vibrations made or on its own. This TV was refurbished and was promised to work fine, but apparently that was untrue. This TV is trash. Do not under any circumstances by this TV, especially refurbished.

For the price and picture, this TV is fantastic. I've tried Blu Rays, HD cable, DVDs, and everything looks great. The picture quality is fantastic. The only reason that it lost a star from me is the sound. It is very tinny. This can be fixed, though, with some computer speakers which are easily attached.

I bought this and another model Vizio after doing much research on a 22" LCD with a good picture and decent on-board sound. I was not disappointed. The picture quality is a good as I could have asked for right out of the box. In addition, there are plenty of adjustments to play with.

The sound had plenty of volume, as most people pointed out. It was, as some said, a bit "tinny", but tolerable. However, after a brief foray into the menu, I found there were base and treble adjustments. I turned the treble down a bit, and cranked the base up to the max. NOT BAD! Perfectly adequate for my ears.

This is a very nice set, especially for the money. It replaced a very expensive (albeit "old")Luce TV, and kicked butt.

Purchased it as a kitchen TV in early 2011. Now with months of experience with it. Easy set up. Bright, vivid picture. Remote range and angle seem fussy at times and have eaten batteries a bit fast then I would like. Looks great on the few HD channels we have. A nice value choice. Very pleased with picture and functions. Looking to upgrade to another Vizio LCD TV as a result of experience with this one.

Purchased this tv from Costco about 1 month ago for $197. Its used in our bedroom, maybe 5-10 hours per week. It has been terrific! I'm not electronics savvy and it was easy for me to set up with the instructions. It sits on an angle in the corner, on a table a little taller than our mattress level. We haven't had ANY problems with the viewing angle. If we are standing across the room or on the bed, the picture is great. I agree with some others that the volume on 1 is a little louder than expected. Still, its fine for us. We only crank it up if we're listening to a music channel and it still sounds fine. The remote is slim and light. The tv is slim and expensive looking. Our daughters CONSTANTLY want to watch their shows in our room because "this is the best tv in the house!". I know there are many consumers that demand a lot from the performance of their electronics. Just reading some of the other reviews is mind-numbing to me with all the technical jargon. However, this is a superb tv for the $$$ and would buy another without hesitation. We may have to do so to keep the kids out of our bedroom. We plan on upgrading the other 2 sets in our house and will definitely buy larger models of this. Very happy with this purchase!
