I use my VK-162 for Amateur Astronomy and it eliminates the hassle of having to manually enter in my GPS coordinates whenever I'm in a new location. Furthermore, it works flawlessly with Windows, Linux, and Rasperry PI's. Now, whenever I use my telescope for astrophotography, I simply plug this GPS dongle into the USB port of whatever computer I'm using at the time and magnetically attach the dongle directly to my telescope. Then, both my telescope mount and control software are automatically updated with my current gps coordinates. Best $20 I've ever spent.

Good accuracy, but ipad mini 6 gets a bit better

I bought one for use on a Stratux ADS-B receiver for general aviation (private pilot). I used a Raspberry Pi 3B connected to an ipad mini 6 with built in GPS. Bench testing at home with the G-Mouse near a window I was receiving a 10m accuracy through the Stratux. Disconnecting it and using my ipad mini 6's internal GPS I was receiving a 4m accuracy from the same location. While the accuracy seems to be lower than the ipad at home, a plane is a tin can (especially a Cessna with the wings above) and having the ability to locate the GPS unit up on top of the glare-shield or elsewhere with more direct sky visibility might invert the results.

I found it functional and sufficiently sturdy. I liked it enough to buy a second one.

The magnetic base is both nice, and worrisome around my computer. (and it showed me just how little iron I've got.)

It appears to be able to read and use a signal with an SNR of 15dB, and I've seen it read one at 7dB.

It needs no particular drivers for any computer, as it shows up as a USB serial device.

They aren't consistent about seeing and reporting WAAS satellites. This may be a result of how far north I am.

One thing I haven't been able to get from this is DOP values I suspect these are dropped as low value.

The only downsides: no obvious way to do a PPS; and the marine interface all GPS units are stuck with.

Handy for time synchronization

I bought this so that I could synchronize my computer time while not connected to the internet. I have portable amateur radio and a small laptop and operate FT8 digital mode, which needs very close time synchronization.
I used the BktTimeSync application, and while it sometimes has a few hiccups at first, it usually works after the second or third try.
I bought this model specifically because it has a long wire because GPS needs line of sight, so I can sit under a canopy or something and put the receiver outside.
I think maybe the only thing that would make it a bit better was if the base was magnetic so I could stick it to things.

Sensitive and quick to acquire a lock

I have been looking for a GPS receiver that will work on my Raspberry Pi network time server, and I found it! My other GPS was a dongle and it worked ok, but it took several minutes to acquire a minimum of 3 satellites required by the software on the Raspberry Pi. Additionally, it would not remain locked and required me to fuss with it.

This GPS, after plugging it in and starting the GPS server, would acquire and lock onto several satellites within seconds and it remains locked to those satellites.

Using U-Center windows software, I monitored its operation for several days and found the GPS to be fast and sensitive picking up and locking onto over 4 satellites within seconds.

I forgot to mention that the GPS is indoors and about 5ft from a window. Outside it is even faster. Its default output is NMEA0183 and it keeps my NTP server up and running.

An accurate NTP server is needed for my Ham Radio equipment as my computer time needs to be accurate to milliseconds, and this GPS does it.

Works well, but a bit fragile

I've purchased 2 of these over a period of 2 years. I use them for my Stratux GPS while flying in different planes. The GPS is great. I often get <10m position accuracy and it quickly locks onto a GPS position. However, on the end of the wire near the plastic GPS housing both developed issues such that the wire would no longer provide a signal (serial port not communicating). I eventually had to open the units and randomly bend the wire (on the end near the housing) to find a wire position that would cause the internal GPS light to illuminate and allow the serial port to communicate again. I then wrapped the wire into that bent position with electrical tape on the wire and the housing. The have both continued to work since then. I'm going to try a VK-172 VK 172 Gmouse G-Mouse USB GPS along with a braided USB cable for my Stratux to see if I can get something that will last longer.

You have to put gpsd in a special mode for buggy gps dongles to prevent it from hanging during trips constantly. Even so, the gps dongle will stop working if you key up your radio or just use it for any length up time.
