This bulb was a snap to setup and lik to HomeKit, much like all the other VOCOlinc devices in my growing collection. There's one little touch that I noticed when comparing it to the L1 that I really like a lot. When I turn either the L1 or the L3 on, they take about a second and ramp up the brightness. Pretty much all the bulbs I have do this, not a big deal. But when you turn them off, the L1 just shuts off instantly, while the L3 takes another second and dims down until it's fully off. Subtle, but pleasant.
I love using these colored bulbs in frosted glass light fixtures from IKEA. The VOCOlinc bulbs give my living room and front windows a splash of color at night. I never would have used the L1's for normal white light to actually light up my room as they are not quite as bright as I prefer, so I keep them on accent lighting duty at night. However, I can definitely see the L3 being a much more multipurpose bulb in my house moving forward.

Initially, there’s a bit of setup - download the app, connect to your internet, etc. Once you have the app and are all registered and whatnot, the installation is super easy. I activated my seventh bulb today in exactly 40 seconds, 30 of which I didn’t even pay attention.
One tip with the bulb - save the box top or insert with the HomeKit connector on it. There’s also one on the bulb, but it’s hard to scan that on your phone with the bulb on. I have all the inserts saved and labeled so if I need to reprogram the bulb I don’t need to fuss with the code on the bulb.
The bulb itself is great. Lots of color options and dimming or brightening. Pretty much any hue or level of light you need is there. I use sort of basic yellow-white mostly, so I wish VOCOlinc would again produce a bulb with just basic bulb colors (they used to - my original bulbs, which still work great, are just yellow-white. They’re still adjustable in that range).
So two years and I’m definitely sold. Basically, if you’re a HomeKit user, this is the bulb.
Note that this was only used with iPhone and Homekit successfully
One thing to beware of with this is if you have a dimmable light and install this it will not work very well. I found that mine would lose connection often and sometimes get stuck.
HOWEVER
If you use this in a standard on off socket, it works exceptionally well!! I have a few of Voco’s lights and they all work amazing and this one is no different. We mainly use these for getting into bed because we can shut the lights off without having to get up!
The Linkwise app works very well with this light too and gives some features that are unavailable in the homekit app as of right now such as wakeup mode that will turn the light on gradually in the room to wake you up (I have mine blast on if I’m not up by a certain time!)
Overall, this light bulb does exactly what is says it does with a fast and easy pairing process and quick response, I can’t imagine buying anything else!!

The bulbs themselves give a good light - not bright like a lightbox, but bright for artificial light. I have eleven set up in four rooms, and am undecided as to whether or not it is worth having more. They have mostly been ok to set up - homekit prompts the scanning of a QR code - though I did have to factory reset one when my ipad wouldn't find it. (Turn on and off at the wall four times).
They are large and do stick out of smaller lamps.
Telling Siri to turn lights on and off, or opening homekit, is much less convenient than a lightswitch - and this is worth factoring in - but I was installing the bulbs on a tight budget for practical reasons, so I haven't looked into not strictly necessary items such as smart lightswitches.
They stay on when the internet goes down: they just stop being adjustable, and they can be turned off at the wall - when turned back on they come on at the same setting as they had when they were turned off.
I can't detect any flicker with my iPad camera.
The worst disadvantage of these is that the electronics make a slight ne-nor noise. It is not loud and it is very high pitched, but it isn't nice. However, I am medically noise sensitive and live in an area with very low ambient background noise, and though I notice it hasn't been bad enough to stop me using the bulbs, so it's reasonable to assume it wouldn't worry most people. I suffer here from my low ceilings, as I can't hear it a few metres from the lights: in a light fitting on a higher ceiling, it would probably be far enough away not to hear it at all. As the noise is very high pitched and may not be audible to a lot of adults, it's worth being aware that if children or pets are bothered it is by a real noise and it does come from the bulbs.
These were the most economical full colour bulbs I could find which worked with Apple homekit - I use an Apple iPad as a home organizer, so I didn't need a separate hub. They aren't exactly cheap but they feel fairly good quality and they are LEDs: if they have the expected life expectancy they shouldn't be that much more expensive than an ordinary bulb.
VOCOlinc isn't responsible for the vagaries of Apple homekit - I haven't tried using its own app for anything but updating, as it demands details and login and I'm bothered about privacy. The difficulties of using Apple homekit with these bulbs haven't affected my star rating, but I gave four stars not five due to the vocolinc app login requirement and the noise.
However, the practicality of use with Apple homekit does matter for user experience. And trying to set up complex automation sequences in homekit is a nightmare. There is only a colour wheel and a colour temperature ring, and no capacity (that I can find) to give a colour a name, nor do they start with standard names (the only ways I can request warm white is to ask Siri directly - not sure if you can transfer that to an automation but certainly not easily - or to find it on the colour ring. Only six colours save and then only as coloured blobs. The wheel looks as if you should be able to put the colour to any shade, but in practice it jumps to a standard colour, often quite a long way from where I tried to put it. And the colours on the screen are nothing like the colours on the bulbs (i.e. the colour on the screen will be red, while the light is purple), which adds to the frustration, particularly when trying to set the sunset, where I wanted to avoid blue light as much as possible. It seems to be practically impossible for me to set up my second room at a later date with the same sunrise amination to the first, unless I'm prepared to completely sacrifice individual control of the bulbs to it. I don't feel that really works as I don't want the lighting in study and living room the same the rest of the day. As the sunrise amination involves five bulbs, generally set to three different colours, and shifting every few minutes, it was a lot of work to set it up, and I'm a bit daunted by trying to do it again from scratch.
Having said which, I do have a nice sunrise and sunset amination set up, and of course, for simpler automations, I doubt much of this would matter.
The VOVOlinc app looked like it has more features to control lights but I only use it with HomeKit to change colours and switch them!
VOCOlinc have been doing reliable HomeKit compatible bulbs for ages, they are now my default choice/recommendation
