Finally, a readable book that explains the benefits of Immersive Technologies in Medicine. In his new book, VRx, Dr. Spiegel deftly and entertainingly explains the history, the status, and possible future uses for virtual therapeutics in medicine. As a “Virtualist”, utilizing Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) with my own patients who have been troubled by crippling phobias and anxieties, I can attest to its curative potential. I have had many conversations with my peers who could just not grasp the usefulness of Immersive Technologies such as VRT. I believe Dr. Spiegel’s book could easily sway them to the “light side”. VRx is a compelling book that should be required reading for all clinicians who are interested in keeping up with the latest medical technologies and evidenced based interventions. It is also enlightening for anyone else who wants to understand how Immersive Technologies could help them with their own health needs.

This is a great book if you are interested in the future of medicine. I do believe virtual reality is it for so many different reasons, and this author clearly demonstrates why. Great research and knowledge, written so anyone can read and understand it. I loved reading the book and realizing what the potential is for improving the lives of so many people without pills and traditional medical solutions. It was exciting and enlightening and so well written.

A central theme of this book is that "Reality is in your mind" (think on that, for a second). Dr. Spiegel's well researched and highly readable book walks through the progress that has already been made in the field of Virtual Therapeutics and the bright future that it offers for patients suffering from a wide range of conditions. If you ever wondered about the therapeutic applications of video game technology, this book is for you. If you are looking for hope regarding our current opioid crisis, this book is for you. If you are looking for evidence of the value of empathy based applications, this book is for you. In short, I will be recommending this book to everyone.

Dr. Spiegel makes a very compelling case for VR's role in medicine. His witty style of writing makes the read very enjoyable and accessible. He dives deep and uses both anecdotes and many published studies to elucidate the mechanism in which VR can help people heal. This book should be read by anyone interested in VR's healing potential, developers looking for ideas to create their own applications, and--most importantly--doctors in all fields who want to improve their patients' health.

Great weekend read! Quite amazing how visual and auditory stimulation affects your mind and body.

I now look at those VR goggles sitting on my shelf differently---a powerful tool that can help shape my mind and how I feel physically. Dr. Spiegel makes this medical exploration approachable for everyone by sharing stories of the many people who have benefitted from use of visual and auditory stimulation to heal the brain or even reduce pain. This book takes you on an inspiring journey about what may be possible using visual and auditory experiences for human performance, healing and health. You may even look at your own world differently about what you expose yourself intentionally and what you may choose avoid. If you want to know the leading edge of this work--reading this book would be a great place to start.

I'm UCLA faculty collaborating on mHealth interventions and planning to incorporate VR into behavioral interventions. I found this book to really help in understanding what VR is currently being used for in the medical field, future directions and limitations.
