Simply connecting power for both units and allow 1-min for the units to link to each other.
Crystal clear sound with DECT 6.0 digital technology. The best reception can be obtained by placing units away from cordless phones or other electronic devices, and make sure the parent unit is 3 feet (1 meter) away from the baby unit.
You can choose to hear sounds from the baby unit all the time, or to hear sounds that exceed a certain VOX level. And set the parent unit to alert you with sound or vibration.
The parent unit is operated with the rechargeable battery or by AC power. A fully charged battery can operate 9 to 16 hours depending on monitor's sensitivity settings. As it takes up to 11 hours for the battery to be fully charged, turn the parent unit off while charging can help shorten the charging time.
The parent unit is preset to plays an audio Safety Reminder when it is connected to a baby unit. You may turn it off by pressing MENU / REMINDER / SELECT / OFF after your initial set up.


A set of five LED lights on the parent unit indicates the level of sound in your baby's room so you can visually monitor noise level with the receiver muted. In vibration mode, the parent unit alerts you with gentle vibrations when your baby is fussing.	Talk from a parent unit to the baby unit (for DM221) and the other parent unit if you have two parent units (for DM221-2). You can use both of the parent unit at the same time to talk to the baby unit.	The loop on the baby unit illuminates as a gentle light night. Both your parent unit and baby unit allow you to turn on or off the nightlight. If no sound is detected for 15 minutes, the light will turn itself off.	Belt clip on the parent unit lets you hands-free and move freely around your home.

The VTech DM221 Digital Audio Monitor with DECT 6.0 digital technology provides crystal clear transmission, eliminating the annoying white noise you hear from analog monitors. The only sounds you hear are coming from your baby. Totally digital transmission eliminates background noise and prevents interference so you can rest assured the only sounds you—and only you—will hear are your baby's. Make sure the Baby Unit is turned on. Move the Parent Unit closer to the Baby Unit, but not closer than 1 meter / 3 feet. If you are using the Parent Unit in cordless mode, the battery may be low and requires recharging. A full charge takes 12 hours. Reset the system by disconnecting power from both units, waiting at least one minute, then reconnecting power. Allow time for the two units to link to each other. Nearby cordless phones or other electronic devices may be interfering with the baby monitor. Separate these devices as far apart as possible. When you turn the nightlight on, if no sound is detected for 15 minutes, the light will turn itself off.

I actually purchased this monitor for my parents. After my dad's second fall outside and my mother not hearing him yell for her while she was inside, I thought this might be a good solution. I read the reviews on several different devices and ultimately went with this one. We are very very pleased with this monitor! They keep one outside on the back porch and one inside. The sound quality is fantastic and very clear! I cannot believe how much and how far away you can hear with this. We did several tests to make sure this would work for their needs and with over an acre of land, while standing as far back on the property as we could, the sounds of yelling for help were loud and clear!!!

We have been using this model with my son for over a year without issue, so when it came time to register for our new baby we asked for the same monitor. Unfortunately it is completely defective. The monitor comes "un-linked" every night without fail. Sometimes it will stay linked for only an hour, sometimes for several hours. Never has it stayed linked through the night and even if we can get it to re-link it becomes un-linked again in short order. We have tried changing the location of the monitors, distance between monitor and receiver, and power cycling the monitor. It is extraordinarily frustrating to be woken in the middle of the night, every night by a defective monitor. We have actually had to switch to a different brand because this one is so consistently unreliable. I would never recommend this. The Graco monitor that we have been using in place of this one has been great.

These are fantastic. Great price, no extra unnecessary bells and whistles. The parent one has a decent battery and range, and I love that it beeps when it's running out of battery or out of range. You can toggle how sensitive or loud you want it to be and there's a cool talk feature that allows you to talk into the parent one so baby can hear you (I have yet to use that but I have no doubt I will as baby gets older, since I know I would have used that with my son when he was smaller.) I don't have a screen to stare at and obsess over, it doesn't connect over our terrible wifi so no worries there, and it lets you know if something is wrong- wrong with its system or wrong with baby. Oh, and as you can probably tell, it's SUPER portable! We take this over to my parents' house all the time and we don't have to reset everything, just plug it in and go. We even brought it to my grandparents' house, where my grandma has the exact same model to monitor my great grandma. The range is great- she can go outside or upstairs and still hear everything, and our two monitors didn't get confused and pick up each others' signals.

I have yet to encounter a single dissatisfying feature of this monitor. I'd buy it again. I'd give it as a baby shower gift. I'd get it in addition to a more sophisticated monitor setup so that I had a backup in case it failed, or in case I needed a portable one. Buy this, I doubt you'll regret it.

I have loved this monitor - 3 people in my family have one now and we all love it. I have had mine for 3 years and it still works like brand new. I am extremely clumsy and have dropped the parent unit countless times. It has dings as a result but it's functions have never been negatively affected by the falls.

The parent unit will stay charged when unplugged for 6-8 hrs and it notifies you with a recurring beep when the charge is running out. I do wish the child unit could be unplugged and work on battery, but it must be plugged in to work. I like that the cords are interchangeable so they work for either the child or parent unit.

The range is excellent- I can go anywhere in my 6000sq foot house and not go out of range. I can even go outside in my front or back yard. Huge bonus! I love that it let's you know when you are out of range (using a beeping sequence) so I'm not constantly wondering if I'll be able to hear my child.

I love that you can change the sensitivity and volume, use it to talk to your child, and use the child unit as a night light. The light is a very dim yellow so don't expect it to give much light, but sometimes the small glow is just what I want. It picks up even the smallest sounds my kids makes if the sensitivity is high.

There are other fancy listening monitors but this one is amazing and affordable.

It says rechargeable battery for power source, so assumed it didn't have cords. I'll be returning the extra cords & hopefully this review will save someone else from making the mistake I did.

We moved into a two story home and realized we needed something to help us hear the baby when downstairs. Its exactly what I needed, and has some cool features I'm impressed by but have no use for. But if I had a use for them I'd be thrilled! One such feature allows you to talk through the parent monitor to baby. My husband and I have used this to talk to each other when we are on different levels of the house. That's been kind of fun- a throwback to my childhood. And it is sweet to hear him talk and sing to the baby through the monitor when it is his turn to change him. I am worried about baby monitors being hacked, because of Facebook rumors, so having it turned on all the time worries me a little, but I have not found any evidence that I should actually be worried with this monitor.

Now that I've had the monitor for a month or so I can attest to its usefulness in new ways. My favorite feature is the night light. Whoever designed it had some real good feedback regarding waking babies at night. My infant often needs to be fed or changed when it is so dark I can't see myself in his room. The night light slowly grows to a soft orange which allows me to see without disturbing baby. The last thing you want is to flash a bright light on baby when you both want to get back to sleep at 2 am. And then the light slowly fades without your having to deal with buttons. Hands free! How helpful!

I bought this monitor because it supposedly has a long range. When I received the product I read that yes it has 1,000 feet range outside, but only 150feet range indoors.
The other problem is that the child unit doesn’t work on battery, only the parent unit does. So the child unit needs to be plugged in to work, limiting its use.
The volume on the parent unit is also very low, even on the highest volume setting one can barely hear.
