I had purchased the Leappad 2 last year for her Christmas present and I had not been terribly impressed. The games and format just seemed kind of stale and I found the leapfrog.com site to be very cumbersome to navigate. My daughter was never very interested in the Leappad but I believe it was mainly because she was only 2 1/2 at the time and the motor skills to play some of the games were very different from my iPad which is what she was used to playing with. She actually only just started playing with Leappad 2 again about a month before Christmas. I think all the commercials on TV for Leappad made her remember she had one. I got more batteries, updated the tablet via computer connection and handed it off. Now that she's a bit older, she is having more fun with it and I am enjoying the updated leapfrog website. I'm having a much easier time getting things updated and downloaded. Cost of apps/games and battery life are definite downsides to this particular product.
This year, I decided to try the Innotab and see if what the differences were. It does look and feel very different from the Leappad products. It's a bit lighter and bit more plastic-y feeling. The rubber gel skin does give it a more substantial feel, though. I like that it is a landscape view for most games and books because it's easier for her to hold. In my opinion, (and contrary to other reviewers) our Innotab is much more responsive to both touch and stylus that Leappad. Also contrary to other reviewers, I like the fatter stylus. It's much easier for her little hands to hold. Setting up did take a bit of time and I knew this from setting up the Leappad last year. I ended up installing, uninstalling, and re-installing the software but that was because I was trying to rush the process so it was my fault not the software. I like the Learning Lodge software and find it easy to navigate and find games and apps. I also like that I don't have to connect the Innotab every time I purchase a new game. Thanks to the wifi, I can make a purchase on my computer and then turn on the Innotab and tap the Downloads icon and start the download process. There is a bit of lag when you first turn it on and when you select an app but children (and adults) need to learn the value of patience. The screen is bright and video quality is very good. Some of the things I specifically love over the Leappad is the option to change the wallpaper to a number of different options, you have the option to put your own mp3 music on the tablet, the voice recording option is excellent and allows me to personalize the greeting with my own voice, which is important to children of working mamas. I also love that the apps are much less expensive than Leappad and still offer some very nice educational experiences. The only downside to this product is that you have to have super bright light for the camera to take even a dim photo. But the camera was the reason I purchased it. We've only had it a few days so I can't comment on battery life, but I am planning to purchase rechargeables in the future.
The important thing to bear in mind is that both of the products I own cost under $100. They were not made by Apple or Samsung and do not have blazing fast processors or 4G technology. They are tablets created by educators for children. As an educator, I strongly feel that these items are not a substitute for a good teachers or time spent with family, but they do offer up some fun and educational diversions for younger children.
