I asked my young nephew to set this up (he's 10), and he didn't even need to look at the instruction booklet. The camera and all the parts came well packed in a box that highlights some of the cameras features. The USB cord we almost threw out because it was tucked under one of the flap of the box, and neither of us saw the small writing on the side that said that is where the cord was located. He immediately began shooting short videos and taking pictures with this camera. One of his favorite things about this camera is how he can apply crazy effects to pictures. Though he tried out the three games that come included on the camera, he wasn't nearly as interested in them as he was in taking all the imagery he could. We ended up getting a micro SD card to give him extra memory storage for the videos. The camera software is compatible with Macs and PCs, so it's easy to download images and videos off of the camera and store them. It would be nice to have a way to delete the included video games if your child wasn't interested in playing them as maybe they could use that extra memory for more pics or videos.
The waterproof case lives up to its name, and being able to take the camera into the water with him at the pool made him the center of attention as other kids gathered around him to see what kinds of things this camera could do under water. The case also protects the camera from bumps, drops, dirt, soda, crumbs, pets, being stepped on - pretty much anything that can kill a regular (and a lot more expensive) camera but that happens with younger kids. While the case is on, you can't move the 180 degree lens, but it's a minor inconvenience. The cover removes and reattaches pretty easily and requires no special tools. I would have liked to have seen a cinching clip or something similar on the wrist strap to help keep it from sliding off a small wrist. We added a carabiner to the strap so that our nephew could then clip it to his belt loop. The included clips to attach the camera like a GoPro to bike or scooter handlebars can be used in other ways. While out playing at a skate park, he and his friends attached the camera to one of the railings so they could record themselves skating. He was also able to attach it to quite a few other things like the safety bars on fair ridges, his toy RC truck, various things on the playground, the dog's collar, you name it. He's been having a blast using this while staying with us for his summer vacation.
Though this isn't the most advanced camera out there, it still takes decent pics and videos. If your child is active and/or hard on their belongings, this VTech camera is a great choice for giving them a way to capture their adventures. Unlike a regular digital camera, this little guy (when in the case) can take a pretty good beating or dunking and not break. Until your child is old enough and responsible enough to take care of a more expensive and delicate piece of equipment, this camera is a wonderful way to let them develop their interest.
EDIT: Okay, the above comments were my original feelings about the camera. A couple of months later now, I have to concede that my daughter loves this thing. It has a simple charm that really appeals to kids. She takes hundreds of pictures, makes videos all the time, even does some crazy stop action animation with it that we put together on the computer. Although I originally complained about the low resolution, small image files can be an advantage; with a micro sd card the storage is effectively limitless. The movable lens is also a very clever invention that may be unique to this camera--you can move from a self-portrait to standard camera view within the same video. Since it rotates 180 degrees, you can get any angle in between, even point it at the ceiling for laughs.
So I have been looking for a kid friendly camera. This thing is amazing. My 3 year old can operate it fairly well on her own, and it gives her independence from me helping her take pictures. She takes pictures of her baby brother, our dogs, her toys, her toes, trees, sticks, ants, leaves, he wall, the floor (you can see where I am going with this). Such a great thing to entertain her and help her explore and improve on spatial knowledge, hand-eye coordination, etc.
