Although I travel a bit I'm not a back packer, preferring an ensuite, but saying that I'm also not rich so I found this book useful for someone like me, but a back packer would like the bit about a back back at the end especially.
( and hostels etc which I've done twice in my life for a night each. But again, wasn't a dorm room )
Also men might not find the book as useful as a woman .
And I use a hard wheeled case, but might buy a soft sided bag with wheels as they are lighter...I digress..
I don't understand why writers don't get proof readers...small grammar errors drive me nuts. Why can't you add an ' a' to make the sentence work...or take away the two 'and and' you added and use one etc .
Her website is the same. So apart from that the writing was good. But it could be great if she just had someone re read through it .
I have researched one bag travel for a while now and do it about 50% of the time. I'm hoping to maybe do it all the time one day..bar cruising, when you need ball gowns , two outfits a day, three if you go to the gym, and snorkel gear. A carry on wont work!
A few things I learnt....have two different credit cards from two different banks in case one freezes, or is lost. Also tell said banks you are overseas.
Photograph on your camera and email to yourself important documents and front page of your passport
I take paper copies but this is better so when the water bottle leaks, we are ok !
Write the technical language for any prescriptions so the pharmacy can understand what you want ..not just ' I need insulin' etc
That was a good tip as I have a type one insulin dependant son .
I assumed Ild show the doctor a box of his insulin if we needed more with the technical name on, ..but what if that all went missing ...!?? Again photograph it and keep it with the passport pages .
One part only ozzies would understand ( I'm a kiwi but they wouldn't get it either ) she said about getting clothes and shoes made in Asia..." I had to go to the big and tall mens shop in Bangkok once to find thongs to fit and I'm only a 44 wide "
What I think she meant was she is 44 us wide foot and needed flip flops / jandals.
Women's shops there wouldn't stock that bigger rubber foot wear
What the rest of the world read was she needed a g string from a man's shop cos she has a 44 inch bottom .
She mentions Walmart later so she is writing for an American audience, maybe change that whole sentence as she can...its on a kindle. Make it more understandable for people other than Australians ( she isn't even Australian !)
On the kindle it says it takes an hour and a half to read, which was probably about right.
She takes 3 tops 3 bottoms, I agree 3 bottoms, but I take 5-7 tops as I hate photos in the same top day after day! I'm not a dress girl.
Yes you need to wash your clothes but who cares, throw them in the bath, use the hotel shampoo , go for dinner, come back, place between a towel to wring them and hang them up . If it means your luggage doesn't get lost travelling and you always have clothes, and you save $50 on every airline and €2 for each bag in a cab ...its a no brainer !
Jeans hang on the verandah.
Or take not much and buy overseas and enjoy your new clothes in your photos !
There are some things she does without that I could never (such as makeup & conditioner -- it's not like this is a list for hiking the AT where you won't be around people) but for the most part she gave a really good overview of how much you actually need and how to make items work in multiple ways.
By the end, I just really wanted to pack a bag and go somewhere, not only to test out her suggestions but just because I miss travelling -- its been too long!
