An Invaluable Tool for Travelers

I'm still reading this book (about 3/4 of the way through) but am geting caught up writing reviews. It's not a mystery - I doubt there will be surprises in the last quarter of the book.
This book is a MUST for anyone contemplating a long period of time away from home base. My husband and I will be traveling for 18 months or so with only a quick stop off at home once or twice to catch up with family and friends. We often take off for a month or six weeks and were planning our 18 months in the same kind of way. After reading Vagabonding, we've changed our outlook altogether and are feeling even more excited (if that's possible) about getting started.
The book is full of helpful websites and anecdotal examples to better explain and back up the author's tips.
Even experienced travelers such as ourselves benefit immensely from reading this book.

Inspiring and Actionable Book: Must Read!

Truly inspiring book! Rolf gets to the point by decoding one of the most fascinating aspects of life: exploring new cultures and places. He does in such a humbling and sincere fashion that has impacted my life since I first read it, a handful years ago. Although I have always enjoyed immersive and simple travel experiences, after reading this book I saw myself traveling in a more reflective manner. I was actually motivated to go on 4-month bicycle tour across the country, as well as on a handful mountain climbing expeditions in different continents. That all said, traveling doesn't have to be expensive—it's all about how we feel the world around us. After all, I genuinely believe we all can leave our comfort zones to explore the unknown.

A wonderful book written with humility. The author offers ideas and suggestions and talks about his own choices, but makes it clear that everyone’s adventure is unique and just because he did things one way, that is not the only way. So, if you’re the youngest in a big family where it seems like everyone has already “done everything”, this is the book for you. It’s about your adventure, not about the adventures others have already had.

This book did an amazing job distinguishing the difference between people who take vacations and people who travel instead. A few of the websites are dated, but I still believe this book is a great place to start exploring the differences between vacationers and travelers, especially if you’re bored with the traditional vacation options and want a more meaningful vacation.

For me, vacations are not so much time to get away and relax, but more of a time to explore and have memorable and meaningful experiences in life.

This book does a fine job pointing out many do’s and don’ts when it comes to traveling, and it also introduces us to different attitudes to enhance our holiday experience. It’s one of those, “you don’t know what you don’t know.”

This book is one of those books, that you’ll say, wow I wish I would have read this years ago, but beware it might spoil your traditional vacation spots forever.

A good primer for those interested in long-term travel

This is a pretty simple book, designed for those who have never traveled but always wanted to. By "travel" I'm referring to long-term, low-budget travel. This is definitely not intended for the independently wealthy or those who don't know how to function without all of the conveniences of home. Nor is meant for the person who has a couple of weeks off of work and just wants to get out of town. There are plenty of other books for people interested in those types of travel.

The author describes several different approaches to travel and refrains from passing judgment on any of them. He lays out the pros and cons of each style and lets you decide what's right for you. He provides dozens of resources and is continually adding to them on his website. Somehow, he passes on all of this information without making the book feel like a typical travel book.

I took six months off after college and traveled around the U.S. with my then-toddler son. Sustained travel can be difficult even in this country. When my son graduates high school, I plan to try long-term international travel. This book was a great jumping off point for me. I was surprisingly impressed.

If you're interested in how to take trips longer than two weeks in an affordable way, this book is for you. It's a really interesting read on how to make traveling part of your lifestyle instead of just trying to fit it in whenever you have some vacation available. This book opened my eyes up to the many resources available for cheap travel and how to make long term travel a reality not just materially and financially, but also mentally. All around great book and is still just about as relevant in 2014 as it was in 2004. The sites and things like that of course will change, but the general principles and mindset is timeless.

A couple of banal blog posts

Each chapter consists of what amounts to a blog post, some hyperlinks, a profile of some famous vagabond cribbed from a wikipedia entry (Thoreau, Whitman), quotations from literature and vapid travel writers. Basically the amount of author written content here is about 80 pages of a 240 page book. The rest is filler. This is a trick of Tim Ferris disciples; you get a bunch of other people to more or less write the book for you. Then the people you quote or tout write glowing reviews. Ferris books actually contain useful information; this one, well, maybe it is useful to someone. Not to me.

And what content. Banal "be humble while traveling" advice. Egg noodle fortune cookie hokum. Weird "you can do it" wowzerism. Useless "avoid getting Montezumas revenge" and "try not to be a crime victim" advice.
I'm a fairly seasoned traveler, contemplating doing a several month nomad jag. This book is not helpful to me. I am assuming there is some population somewhere; 20 year old backpackers who don't read their Lonely Planet guides maybe. I'm not that guy.
