More like a king than an emperor

I do love to collect books about tableware, so this book was a little dissapointing. Not that the collection or the photography were dissapointing, but when I buy this type of book I also like to hear the stories of how the collection was formed, which pieces are loved, how or when they are used, the research. Instead I got a long introduction by Leon Talley, ex editor of Vogue about the ¨friends¨ that have dined with Mr. Valentino (shallow may I describe). Then a few recipes (some with complicated ingredients and all in metric measures), really don't do it for me. My conclusion is that the collection was made by a private buyer or curator and Mr. Valentino did not have any involvement in it's development except providing the funds. The ultimate sin was to mention that a Meissen black swan was part of the Collection (rarer than hen's teeth) and no photo was provided. So my final judgment, buy only for the eye candy and/or your an accomplished chef.

"Valentino: At the Emperor's Table" is a visually spectacular book but one that nonetheless disappoints. On the one hand, its size, weight, and price make it difficult to handle and acquire. On the other, the fabulous photos of Valentino's superb possessions and sense of style are by no means matched by the text that opens the book. Andre Leon Talley's introduction is at best a pleasant piece of fluff that provides no background explanation of how Valentino rose from obscurity to the heights of haute couture, developed his exquisite taste, and acquired his stunning collection of tableware and interior decor. In sum, it seems that Assouline, normally a top-drawer publisher, failed to invest adequate time and editorial resources into underwriting a more probing examination of Valentino's lifestyle, which is indeed an ode to beauty.

Not for aspiring tabletop decorators

If you are looking for tabletop ideas this is not the book for you. A vanity publication, an ode to a life of luxury and excess, the tabletops shown in the book are not to be replicated by any but billionaires. The tables are loaded with antiques, and are not particularly creative, nor are they intended to inspire in my view. The recipes are more inspiring than the table decor in my view but this book is not marketed as a cookbook.

What a disappointment. I should have sent it back. Not much content, and large photos only to take up space. I can only assume Andre Leon Tally thought they could throw this together, put a huge price tag on it, and it would sell because of both men's association with Vogue. My advice--buy this when it's in the remainder section.
