Matthew Carter comes to the violent boomtown of Darwin just one job away from leaving his troubled past behind. When his mentor is murdered, he must choose between running into the desert and staying on to find the stash of gold that could mean his redemption. Caught in a firestorm between the competing wills of a legendary lawman, a corrupt rail baron, and a vengeful Colonel, Matthew rides hard with the fear that his last job may turn out to be just that.
This is the first episode of a western saga presented in serial format. Matthew’s flight from danger introduces some of the players in this suspense filled version of the Old West and sets the train moving through what will become a six volume story-arc of grand conspiracy and twisted allegiance.

About the author

I am that rare creature known locally as a "Native San Diegan". I graduated from San Diego State University in 1997 with a B.A. in something not writing related and tacked on a minor in something also not writing related.
My requisite list of amusing work experience includes such gems as reservation agent, landscape maintenance specialist, gymnastics coach, computer repair tech, restaurant manager, game designer, technical writer, web designer and marketing director. My true day job for the past 21 years has been in telecommunications where, yes, your awful cell phone reception is my fault.
A new fantasy title CRAFTLINGS will be released during 2020 and book 3 in the Valley of the Damned series is plotted out and waiting for more attention. A science-fiction satire and zombie-detective story are written and waiting their turn through the editing barrel.
I am also burning midnight oil with DARK PRODUCTIONS: A joint venture with artists Leen Isabel and Nguyen Dong and also fellow author Selena Jones.
Supporting my creative endeavors are my amazing wife and two wonderful kids that are finally old enough to camp out in my writing room and write their own stories.

Gunslingers roamed the streets, sharpshooters keep a close eye, and no one man dares to be sheriff. There's a little of everything in this spellbound. The roughest-of-the-rough meet head on.
There's another side to Falk: his mastery of character development. We meet a Frenchman, who is no fool and ready for any man's challenge. We meet a Colonel, who at first seems villainous. The characters literally come out of the western woodwork. We even get to meet a small Chinese woman, who is nobody to mess with.
It's hard to say where the action begins and where it ends. A page-turner defines this novel.
Our eye immediately finds the young Matthew Clark setting out to discover life and its mysteries. We learn that he has endeared himself to one man, a man who shows him the ways of the world. This man dies, leaving Matthew with the notion that a booty will be waiting for him.
We quickly learn that Matthew must endure the shortcomings of his partner Jeb, who gets them in one pickle after another. The action hardly lets up for a second, giving you mere seconds to catch your breath.
As these two gunslingers make their way into Darwin, where they must intercept a telegram, they hear news of a Colonel that may or may not have his hands in the cookie jar. We see several types of sub-plot going on. We see an intricate web in the making.
Valley of the Damned is a thriller in the true sense of the word. Of course, in the end the players must meet a deadline, or the booty may be lost forever. However, I didn't see the twist that Falk threw in at the last minute, leaving me in awe. I hated that the book had to end, it was that good. It begs for a reread. At least I hope to see its sequel in the near future. I give this novel the highest regard. I give it five stars!
Now being a first time author and a native San Diego resident (big plus there) I'll give a little break for his genre attempt on his first book. The story kicked off well and picked up some more steam a quarter way through. Near the end though the story wavered as if it's trying to end too quickly and resolve loose plot lines. I would've liked to see some more character development as well. In the beginning it was a bit unclear who the main character was and the protagonists were.
Overall I would give this a 3 star rating but for what I mentioned to begin with I'll give him 4 for the courage to buck the odds and hope for future episodes.
Matthew Carter struggles with stepping over the line and becoming the hardened outlaw. While his partner Jeb has no problem being a dirty scoundrel. This is not a romantic western with petticoats and frills...THANK GOODNESS! This is a gritty story that puts you smack in the middle of Darwin, with your hand on your pistol, waiting for the next shootout.
