I purchased this adapter after fighting with the PL-2303 based adapters which cause BSOD in Windows 7 64-bit. While it was a bit more expensive, it's a well made unit with a nice long cord with a TX/RX led embedded in the housing. Windows and linux work great out of the box due to the ftdi chipset which is the best usb to serial chip available.

When I got a new computer the OS was Windows 7 (64 bit machine). My USB to RS232 Serial Port adapter that I had previously purchased elsewhere that had the Prolific driver failed to work. After numerous downloads of drivers that were supposed to work on a 64 bit machine I gave up. I use my serial port adapter to connect my Yaseu FT-950 Amateur Radio to my computer. After about six months I tried the drivers again and the original serial port adapter still didn't work. I then searched Amazon and found this one with the FTDI Chipset and drivers. I replaced the other one with this and it works perfectly. I am able to control my radio via my computer and read the frequency information directly into to radio logs. I highly recommend this to all.

I bought this cable to connect my laptop to network equipment via the Cisco console connector. My previous experience with a cable based on the Prolific PL2303HX chipset has not been good (hard to find Windows 7 drivers, frequent BSOD, etc.) so I opted for this somewhat more expensive cable that uses the FTDI chipset and have not been disappointed. Upon plugging the cable in the first time, Windows 7 automatically located and loaded drivers and then updated them to the latest version without any intervention. The cable works as expected and I have yet to experience a BSOD since switching from the old cable. Shipping was free and immediate. What more could I ask?

I upgraded my computer to Windows 8.1, I have a Kenwood TS-480SAT and a TM-V71A, the serial/usb cable I had been using with XP would not work with 8.1, Prolific drivers, wouldn't recognize the comport no matter what drivers I installed.
Got this cable, downloaded the drivers from the site they direct you from and I can now access the 480 with the Kenwood control program and N1MM and I can program the V71A, just a matter of selecting the right comport.
Read up on the difference between the Prolific chip and it's problems and then look at the info for the FTDI.

This cable works really nice, I plugged it to my Win7 x64 and the Serial port was detected right away, I didn't have to download 3rd party drivers or anything. I don't get BSOD, no crashes, the cable just works. Totally worth the money.

I purchased this cable to tether my TS-60 Morningstar Solar Controller to my laptop. This needed to be done so I could upgrade the firmware, get live stats on my battery and PV relay state and make fine-tune adjusts if need be. I received the package promptly and was directed to go to a website to install the proper drivers for operation. All went almost flawlessly and I am now able to connect to my laptop without a hitch. I say 'almost flawlessly' because I did have to alter the cable minutely. The RS232 port is internal on the TS-60, with very little wasted space. This being the case, I was forced to remove the outer casing from the Serial side in order to make it fit. I rate the cable five stars because I do not consider this a fault on the part of the manufacturer, and even without the security casing the cable worked fine.

I've tried the Cables Unlimited USB-2920 and the Trendnet TU-S9 USB to RS232 DB9 serial convertors and neither one of them will transmit the full data stream from my Oregon Scientific WMR-968 weather station to any of my computers with Vista, Win7x32 or Win7x64 installed. This FTDI cable adapter transmits the data perfectly to them all, including Win7x64. Installation is quick and simple; download the executable driver file from the manufacturer to suit your OS and install it. Everything else is automatic, it will use com 3 if it's available on your system. The Cables Unlimited and the Trendnet convertors have many highly rated reviews here and lots of happy owners; I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with either one of them, they both installed easily on all my computers, just that they don't work with my particular equipment; this FTDI cable adapter does. If you're searching for a USB to RS232 convertor you should try it.

After moving to a 64-bit Windows computer running Windows 7, I no longer had serial ports to communicate with older equipment. Based on reviews of this and other cables, I decided to try this one. I'm also familiar with the FTDI driver set as we use them in some of our products. This serial to USB cable uses the well-known FTDI VCP driver set to make a USB port look just like a serial port. Although the cable looks simple, the head of the 9-pin connector end has a bunch of circuitry in it with some LED's you can't see unless they are lit.

Plugging in the cable to an available USB port, Win7 64-bit immediately recognized the device and automatically downloaded and installed the drivers. After that, it was a matter of plugging in my Garmin GPS III Plus to the serial port end of the cable. I fired up Garmin MapSource and did a download from the GPS; the program found the GPS without a hitch and off-loaded all my recent tracks.

It should be noted Garmin does supply a serial to USB cable but they specifically state its drivers do NOT work with 64-bit operating systems. This cable made my older serial comm GPS III Plus work just fine on a 64-bit operating system. So this cable is not only a good deal, it's a good way to keep using older serial equipment through a USB port. This is probably the best thing I've purchased for my new computer since I got it.
