At first I was put off by the stilted, awkward, wordy writing that included way too many adjectives and adverbs. It sounded like writing from a past century or more. Here are examples: "Brandy pondered her sudden disappearance of courage, resolve, and stamina which had aided her successful writing career...,""The taste of a sellout lingered in Brandy's pleasingly shaped mouth," and "The intrigued man gave free rein to his perceptive mind." All of the first chapters read this way or worse. They were filled with little but reflections and discriptions.
In addition there were point of view problems with quick switches without indications and some statements during one character's POV she or he couldn't have possibly known. "Brandy didn't catch the worried inflection in his tone." This was from Brandy's point of view, so she couldn't have thought this, if she didn't catch it.
There were a few damns, but no vile profanity. There were several graphic sex scenes, and no protection was ever used. The first was a one night stand which made no sense to me, since Brandy had never been with a man before, and she was unsure of Steve. This went against how she was portrayed. I think the story would have been much stronger without these, because they detracted rather than added. The rainstorm sex scene made even less sense, when Brandy suddenly decides to act differently, and both of them get upset. The ending also seemed rushed. I felt more time should have been spent in working out their problems and discovering how they stood on important issues.
This being said, however, the writing did get much better about half way through. It was almost as if it'd been written by different authors. I found little evidence of stilted writing in the last half. The characterizations were also good. These were real people with faults, short-comings, and mistakes, not a perfect hero and heroine. The plot and misunderstandings seemed feasible and complex enough to make it interesting. I ended up liking the story and wish it could be better edited. Taken as it is presented, however, I couldn't give it more than three stars.
