Excellent book for those who love the stories of the north spiced with thrilling romance that brings tears to once eyes. I read this book about 25 years ago in college in Europe (in my native language). Since I've immigrated to U.S 20 years ago I tried to find this book without any results (even major bookstors didn't know who James Oliver Curwood was). Thanks to Amazon search train i was able to find it. I received this book 2 weeks ago and read it over Christmas and then my wife. I was glad I forgot most of it from the college days and could enjoy it again. My wife was overwhelmed and finished the book with tears in Her eyes.

I have copies of all of James Oliver Curwood's novels and all biographies. He is my favorite novelist, and "The Valley of Silent Men" is the greatest adventure/love story I have ever read, and I have lost count of how many times I have reread the novel. In 1963, I visited his home and writing studio in Owosso, Michigan. In 1970, I undertook a trip to try and find the Valley of Silent Men in the Yukon, as identified by the author in the novel. Of course, I could not find it, even though I hiked in the Campbell Range, where RNWMP sergeant James Kent thought he was after canoeing up the South Nahanni. In order to create outstanding stories in the northern wilderness of Canada, which Curwood referred to as "God's Country, he found it necessary to be quite generous with poetic license. He obviously had never been up the South Nahanni. He also rarely mentioned the mosquito and black fly problem, which might cause one to pause regarding whether, at least in the summer, the Northland that was the setting of so many of his novels, qualifies as "God's Country."

Curwood blows me away, a valuable piece of North American history is vanishing. In this book, as in many of his others, Nature, Love, Courage, and the absolutes of Human Law dance across a stage larger than most of us will ever see. Few of might want to face the problems Jim Kent faced, but most of us men would be happy enough to win his prize...:-)

I've read this book over quite a few times! This is the first book by this author that I read and I liked it so much I've been continuing on with more of his books. This author is one of my favorite and I like his books! I enjoy it when he writes about the far north and the RCMP.
