Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Valley, like most of Meikle's work. He's a talented writer and his work is a must for horror readers and writers alike.
The Valley is not a story about a lost world a la Michael Crichton which was a Jurassic dinosaur tale. The Valley's creature characters are more reminiscent of the movie 10,000 BC than the dinosaur dominated Lost World. I felt disappointed about this. One of the reasons I purchased The Valley to read was because I thought it would be a dinosaur tale, but it was not. The story plot can be succinctly summed up in the title of this review.
There is an allegorical lesson in the Valley--don't be greedy. It can be summed up in the idiom: All that glitters is not gold.
If you liked the movie Cowboys VS Aliens, or are a rabid fan of the genre, you will like The Valley. If you are not a rabid fan of this genre, keep looking, however at $2.99, the price is right.
In search of the mother lode, a cliched group of greed-stricken men release into the world something that was best left buried and open a world that might have been Montana 10,000 years ago.
