In this installment of the ValueTales series, Spencer Johnson draws some lessons from the life of Ben Franklin (1706-1790).

The book tells of Ben Franklin's childhood interest in saving time and money. This value is personified by a talking penny named "Benny" who interacts with Ben throughout his life. Readers learn of a number of Ben's inventions and personal habits with an emphasis on the time and money saved by each one. The book follows his life as he works in his brother's printing business, strikes out on his own, and then starts his own printing business and family. Ben's lifelong love of reading and writing is presented as his desire to "save" ideas for use by himself and others.

Like other books in the ValueTales series, this book uses a real-life person to exemplify an important value. It is suitable for reading by children in the later elementary school grades. A "Historical Facts" section at the book's end summarizes Franklin's life in a single-page bio form suitable for adults.

Closing quote: "Because of Ben Franklin, many people today know the value of saving, so much so that many institutions like banks and insurance companies and even colleges are named after him. Perhaps now you may want to think about what would make you happy. You may want to start saving things that are important to you. Just like our good friend, Ben Franklin." (pp. 61-62)
