While keeping up a gruelingly intense plot-pace that's identical to TVD, Hazen also allows the characters quiet times for emotions. Rather than merely reacting (or acting erratically or out-of-character) to the series of bombshells that are constantly blowing up (because this IS a convincingly written portrayal of Mystic Falls), she lets the characters think and consider and make choices. They can cry and feel badly and be playful.
Hazen's dialogue is dead-on, and I love nothing more than listening to these people speak to each other because it sounds JUST LIKE THEM and it's nice to know that in some universe, in this version of events, they're allowed to organically grow and change and learn from their mistakes.
She manages to stay in-character while doing something completely different than the show. I can see it, all of it, in its painful (and hilarious and sexy and sweet and brutal) clarity.
Michelle also demonstrates a maturity in her writing by having her characters grow outside what is expected of them. Even network writers can't keep track of their characters well enough to truly have them learn from things that have passed before. Fewer still allow them to be flawed/human enough to see themselves making the same mistakes and not learning the first time though.
I really enjoyed some of the moments between Damon and Stefan, and Caroline and Stefan in this story. The development of the close and loving relationship between Elena and Damon goes without saying but it's written with passion and insight. Even when our favorites are making an epic mess the scene is written with sympathy, but doesn't avoid the hard consequences that life sometimes doesn't allow you to take back. Even in Mystic Falls.
Enough rambling from me, do not miss this chapter of the arc. Buy this story and get to reading, you won't regret it. :)
LOOK NO FREAKIN' FURTHER.
This is hands-down my most favoritest piece by my most favoritest author of fan fiction EVER and I read ALOT of fan fiction. I have read this entire Trilogy probably upwards of 7 times. No joke. There are passages in this book that will crawl under your skin and burrow into your soul and will make you want to cry and laugh and rock in the corner and suck your thumb because your fragile heart doesn't know how to contain the FEELINGS. F the writers of TVD. This is what was SUPPOSED to happen. Michelle has the ability to write these characters even better than the freakin' people that DO IT FOR A LIVING. Why is there no justice in the world? WHY????
Just...Just...Download all three now...PLEASE...and avoid the sad, miserable, grave mistake of depriving yourself of experiencing the beautiful sweeping masterpiece that is the Desperate Love Trilogy.
You are only cheating yourself by not reading it. Seriously. Love yourself and JUST FREAKIN' DO IT, MY FRIEND.
I love how I can just submerge myself into this new version of events and it still feels exactly like the TV show playing out in my mind as I read. It's very true to character which is awesome. It even adds the little bits that they don't do in the show but are very realistic. :) great read! I hope she comes out with many more books. :)
