From the beginning of the book, Abigail's weight is negatively discussed. There was no need for there to be such derogatory commentary on Abigail's appearance. I should've known to stop reading when one of the first descriptions of the main character was that she had recently lost fifteen pounds and was in a size sixteen... That doesn't qualify as someone who is "huge" or "double wide" or disgustingly "big" in my opinion... I took great offense in the descriptions of Abigail and it took away from the story.
Enter the vampire hero, Val, who is disgusted by how big Abigail is and wants nothing to do with her. She's so fat and unworthy to him that he doesn't hesitate to cause her great fear and harm when she agrees to save his life. But once he tastes her blood, he softens toward her and calls her "little dove" affectionately. Yeah, I had a hard time with that as well... Even though Val suddenly found Abigail irresistible and extremely desirable, it was too little too late because I knew he was mainly attracted to blood...
I enjoyed the parts of the story that weren't focused on Abigail's weight. I enjoyed reading about the humans who were trying to find a safe haven in the other world. I wanted to know more about the interactions between humans and other creatures. I wanted to know more about Abigail and the other characters...
Abigail could have been described as an overweight girl and that would've been the end of it. I just don't understand why the author had to go to such great lengths to explain how repulsive overweight females are to others, especially men. I worry about teens/young adults reading this and having more body issues. I'm almost 40, am slightly overweight, and now feel ashamed of my body for the first time in a very long time because of Ramona Gray's harsh descriptions...
Yes, I realize Gray is the author and can write whatever she wants. I applaud her for having the courage to write and publish her books. I truly did like the story behind the weight, and it's unfortunate that Gray made how gross and disgusting being overweight is the primary focus. It's a shame that the author took away from her own writing like that. I will not read anything else she writes, nor will I recommend her to any of my fellow book lovers.
The author also needs an editor/proofreader who understands grammar and punctuation rules as there were many errors that also took away from the story.
Update:2/5/2015 After some serious thought and in the interest of fairness, I finally broke down and read the rest of this book. While my opinion of the hero improved slightly, I stand by my original review. I simply could not get into the story after his original treatment of the love interest. I hope the writer will keep writing, though. She is very talented; I just didn't like this story.
Val needs her blood but once he bites her he knows she will become taken with him. He does not want her following him around trying to get into his pants. Abigail cant stand him but wants to pay her debt so allows him to bite her, only things don't turn out quite how Val expected as Abi is much stronger than he gave her credit for. She does not follow him around like a love sick teenager and to his dismay she blanks him and avoids him whenever she can. Val turns out to be the one following her around and so the story of Val and Abi in this world begins.
I loved this book. Abigail was kick ass in a passive aggressive sort of way and Val was down right sexy as hell when he wasn't being a dick. Val is a good vampire but that doesn't mean he is nice. The names he calls Abi at times I had to wonder how he didn't get a stake in the heart and a large THE END was written in the next stanza. But my goodness when he was was sexy he was good.
The other Characters in the book are great too and you know if your favorite makes it to the end they will probably have a story of their own later on. The author is not afraid to kill people off so it keeps you on your toes.
This book does end on ends on a huge cliffhanger. I hate cliffhangers and would normally try to avoid them but when I got to the end of this book I immediately bought the next one. It was just that good! A great vampire book and a good story. It could easily have gone down the cheesy route with Abi being a plus size girl but it really didn't. The chemistry between Val and Abi is red hot and the humor between them made this work too.
This is a 3 book series and I cant wait to get into the rest of them. Loved it and would recommend it.
I give it 9 out of 10. Excellent! I almost didn't get out of the bath.
