With a blend of interesting characters simmering with an undercurrent of young adult hormones and motivations, The Vampires Next Door takes off like a thrill-a-minute Halloween night. Evil-appearing characters with glowing eyes and an unquenchable thirst for blood seem to over populate the historic city of St. Augustine.
More than one person has been surprised when rummaging through a dusty attic or an old chest filled with artifacts or relics from another time, another place. And so it is with the characters, Alison and Rodham, as their curiosity pulls them deeper into the unseen and un-talked-about realm of St. Augustine. Now that buried secrets of St. Augustine are out, readers can look forward to the promise of author Klass that there is more to come in this series.
In the meantime readers will probably wonder about their own “neighbors next door.” Sleep well after reading The Vampires Next Door.
Alison is bookish and shy having just moved to St. Augustine from cooler climes up north in Virginia and is not thrilled in the least at her new circumstances. She's hot. She's bored, and she's convinced that she will be forced to suffer through the next two years of high school in friendless misery. Her only sources of comfort are texting her BFF back home and ogling the hunky neighbor boy next door from her apartment window.
All that changes when she notices seriously suspicious goings on at her new, party animal neighbors' apartment and the cute boy next door takes a sudden, unexpected interest in her. Alison realizes that St. Augustine might be a lot more exciting and dangerous than she originally suspected as she is inexorably pulled into calamitous events beyond her control and experiences a secret underworld that she never knew existed.
This is a pretty light read and the story is straight forward, but with plenty of excitement to keep a young reader's attention all taking place in the historically rich setting of St. Augustine, America's oldest town. The language is not complex or overly flowery and the narrative cuts straight to the action. I think the pacing and quality of expression appropriate for the genre and audience. The depiction of the main character, Alison, as a normal, slightly pudgy, majorly insecure teenager who unexpectedly discovers a secret, vampire-slaying family legacy definitely helps the work connect with its target readers as does the romantic subplot. Along with the more mundane descriptions of Alison's life like school, tests, football games, boyfriends, and bullies, it's a depiction that rings solidly true. So if you have a teenage girl in your life who likes to read and is into vampires or you are one yourself (a girl that is, not a vampire :) ), I'd recommend The Vampires Next Door.
Since her parent's divorce, Alison's mother decided to "dust off her nursing degree" to rejoin the workforce, and her first interesting job offer was in St. Augustine, FL.Despite the Ancient City's undeniable charm, Alison is NOT impressed. Especially since she was uprooted from a more "ginger-friendly" climate and her only friend in Virginia with only two years left in high school! As a self-conscious, introverted teenage girl, only two things are interesting enough to pry Alison's eyes from her reading... The mysterious new neighbors whose nightly parties disrupt Alison's solitude, and Rodham, the heartthrob across the hall that awakens Alison's budding libido.
The story is told from both Alison's and Rodham's perspectives as they are both intrigued by and suspicious of the neighbors. They're drawn drawn together by their mutual fascination which is more than they bargained for! I love how the characters grow, learning as much about themselves as they do each other while battling perils even older than the Ancient City.
I loved this story and strongly recommend it for others who enjoy mystery, and vampires...or for just a lovely read to refresh the butterflies and excitement of your first crush. The Vampires Next Door is rich with descriptives so visualizing the setting is effortless, even for someone who *doesn't* spends every possible moment in St. Augustine (no one could accuse me of that...). Also, the main characters are very warm and relatable, making it easy to be swept up in the adventure!
