In this story we meet up again with Mattie and Alyson (Allie). Mattie was attacked and turned just days before his eighteenth birthday and if it wasn't for Cain and his girlfriend Allie he would have been lost. It was Cain who taught him how to survive and it was Allie who gave him unconditional love in spite of his being a vampire.
Mattie has been begging Allie for the last year to allow him to turn her so that they will always be together and even though Allie who is always impulsive and quick on the trigger decided she couldn't do it yet; she had to be there for their friend Ben. Little by little being around Allie became harder and harder and Mattie managed to just come around on weekends, then the weekends turned into longer periods apart. The last time they were apart it was six months and when he returned it was with hope that she had decided to join him and become a vampire.
Allie finally agreed to be turned and Mattie was all ready to do it. He had learned all he could about turning someone from Cain and he was sure he could do it right. Allie became a vampire but that is only the beginning of her story and to find out more you will have to begin the new series starting with this one. As I mentioned before, each novella picks up where the other one ended and it follows the life of each character. You could start ALMOST HUMAN - The Second Series with this book, but I strongly recommend beginning with ALMOST HUMAN - The First Series, which introduces all the main characters.

This is the first novella in book 2 of the Almost Human series by author Melanie Nowak and unlike the previous novella installments new readers could jump in here if they so desired.
I was THRILLED to get an ARC of this installment. With the start of book 2 the characters are still the same but the focus has shifted so new readers I feel would be able to pick this series up here and enjoy without reading the previous book (set of novellas) in the series. That being said I personally would recommend starting from the beginning just because the series is so excellent!
There is a fair amount of new world building in this installment, which is completely necessary for the story, but just took the edge off the 5 stars of the previous installment for me. S o to be fair (and so my review fans know that I do rate each and every book in their own rights) I dropped half a star. Don't let that discourage you though as it still round up to a five and is by far my favorite vampires series this year. My advice- start out with book 1 while you wait for this release ;)
4/12 out of 5 stars - and I can't wait for part 2 of which I am excited to see there are 12 ..... TWELVE installments!!! *Grabby hands**
