If you are completely new to van building (as I am) and want a general discussion of the project, this is a great resource. *BUT* I am also a person who built small homes, rehabilitated basements (wiring, framing, plumbing, drywall, etc.), and been a hobbyist carpenter for over a decade. For me, the book has some value in that it allows me to get a general idea of how to use those prior skills in this context.

So because I can take their general outline and flesh it out using my prior knowledge and experience, I liked the book. But without that background in home refurbishing and carpentry, this book would likely leave me fairly confused. This book does not provide the sort of fine detail and process list that someone without those skills would very much need.

In short, if you are already handy and experienced in the relevant work, this book is a good introduction to applying those skills to the van world. The product recommendations are also valuable.

I've got my money worth out of it.
Loses one star (4 out of 5) because it skips A LOT of "details" that the reader will have to figure out on his/her own by consulting other book, web pages, professionals or hardware store clerks. However, being irritated by the technicalities that this book has skipped over would only indicate that your craftsmanship confidence level is too low and that you probably should not be contemplating converting a van by yourself.

Decent book. I like the tool guides. Probably a good resource. Not a comprehensive book at all on building out a van. Not what I was hoping for. the how to pick your van guide is not as good as most blogs out there on how to pick a van. The authors here just describe why they picked a sprinter van.
Why the heck aren't there any pics of the finished product... Only pics of the step by step build but no finished pics except for 3 highly cropped ones on the back cover.

This book is very thorough in how to build a camper van. There are diagrams, pictures and tool lists. I really liked the 21 day approach to build it. Day 1: Lists what tasks are at hand, what tools (with pictures) are necessary to complete and how to do it. It’s the same with all the remaining days with comprehensive instructions. The end product turned out nicely. They share many like how to keep the cabinet doors closed when on the road as well as listing resources for supplies and inspiration.

Being the most modern book on van conversion I thought this might be a good overview reflecting the current options. But no - it focuses on only one van, the Merc Sprinter; it contains nothing on adding windows; nothing on raised roofs; no discussions on design options for features; toilets are only mentioned in passing and there's little detail on anything really.
BUT the really good news is there's pictures of the tools you need for each job, so there are loads of pictures of, for example, cordless drills. If I didn't know what one looked like this would have been really useful.
Cost was £23. Value is probably about £5.

Enjoyed reading this book and the personal experience the authors bring. Whilst it's very specific to their build it has covered most things you would need when converting a van. More in depth stuff like installing windows, rock n roller beds or gas exhaust holes are not covered. Having never converted one myself, and in the early planning phases I picked up many good ideas.
