Van Helsing Mass Market Paperback – May 7, 2004

4.5 out of 5 stars 97 ratings

Deep in the mountains of nineteenth-century Carpathia lies the mysterious and mythic land of Transylvania, a world where evil is ever-present, where danger rises as the sun sets, and where monsters such as Count Dracula, the Wolf Man, and Frankenstein's Monster take form and inhabit man's deepest nightmares -- terrifying legends who outlive generations, defying repeated attacks from the doomed brave souls that challenge them in their never-ending war upon the human race.

On order of a secret society, only a lone force of good stands against them -- the legendary monster hunter Van Helsing, a man revered by some and feared by many. In his ongoing battle to rid the earth of these fiendish beings, Van Helsing must now travel to Transylvania to bring down the lethally seductive, enigmatically powerful Count Dracula, and joins forces with the fearless Anna Valerious, a woman out to rid her family of a generations-old curse by defeating the vampire. But unknown to all, the immortal Dracula will stop at nothing to unleash his master plan of subverting human civilization and ruling over a world of havoc, fear, and darkness...

I bought this book on Kindle almost two years back, and it never failed to amaze me. Unlike the movie, which, I'm not going to lie is wonderful and full of action and thrills, it kept in the moments of who Dr. Frankenstein was and how he and Dracula met, how the vampire basically tricked him into coming to Transylvania to create the creature for him to use as a way to bring his children to life. What I like about is how it adds depth of character development of the characters themselves as well as explains how they became the people they are now. However, I'd wish they added some more details about who Gabriel is and how he came to be, how Dracula knew him thousands of years ago.

All in all, while I love the movie, the novel itself won my heart.

Vampire stories sometimes mesmerize people, and I am one of them. I once tried one of the children's book which is about vampire series, and I enjoyed it. I found Van Helsing after I watched the movie, which I enjoyed very rmuch. When I purchased this book, I found it was based on the movie, so I thought there's not much difference from the movie. But I enjoyed the book anyway, with detailed descriptions of battles against Van Helsing and vampires. If you are looking another book about vampire, I can recommend this book.

Enjoying the book a lot. Follows the movie well and even adds additional detail to the character’s backgrounds. Was a bit shorter than expected however for the price paid, and had some shelf damage. I can forgive that due to how rare the book seems to be as I had trouble finding it elsewhere for cheaper.

I chose this rating because of how the author kept me on my toes during the entire time I was reading getting me anxious to find out what would happen in the next chapter. I especially liked this book because it talked a lot about how God chose to make our world and how he lets things happen for a reason. It also had a lot of action and excitement in it, but the main reason why I liked this book is because of the entire thing with how a man who has no memory of his past and who thinks that he has to fight or kill demons to regain his memory thanks to a priest, goes to Transylvania to protect a woman and help her kill Count Dracula to try to regain his memory and falls in love with her. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good romance, thriller, werewolf and vampire story.

Well, I'll have to agree with most people; the book was better than the movie over all. The storyline was far improved compared to the movie, but that's to be expected simply because it's a book.

My main dislike for the book came from some of the technical errors in the details and the writing of the book. Such as, I counted a few typos and being as this is a book based on the movie, the details should stick to the movie. Granted, I can understand if you want to change some details about the character for the purpose of extending the plot, but this was not the case. In the book there are small alterations that don't do anything for the story except to annoy and confuse the fans of the movie. An example of this would be that in the book, Dracula has a finger missing, however it's quite clear in the movie that he definately has all of his fingers.

I did however like some things about the book such as how the author wrote flashbacks which made you futher understand the complex feelings of the characters later in the story. The character development was definately improved compared to the movie as well as the character backround. I enjoyed how the characters of Victor Frankinstein and his "monster" were played out far more so in the book than in the movie as well.

Overall, I liked the book, but it could have been much better had all of the details and technical aspects lined up correctly.

Van Helsing is one of my favorite movies. Reading through it is just as nice. I like how it goes into detail about the character's actions and motivations.

I've never been much of a book worm but am gradually getting through more books as I go. Being a serious fan of the movie this book was a must have for myself - very pleased I picked it up! Carrying all the epic moments from the movie and adding a good amount of backstory that the movie almost lacked in places.
