SUMMARY
We were looking for a litter box that was easy to clean and helped contain odors at a good price. This product works well and for the price would recommend it.

PROS
* Door is sized well to support larger cats (this was a big concern/consideration for us)
* Easy to open and close the litter box
* Comes with a cleanable filter to help control odor
* Container is smooth making it usually easy to clean

CONS
* Door easy falls off and as such we do not even use it
* Bottom is not square and not completely flat making it sometimes difficult to clean
* Where the bottom and top of the litter box meets a small gap remains. The cats sometimes urinate between it requiring more cleaning. In addition, it is possible for urine to escape between the gap.

This Extra Giant litter box is fantastic. I have used it, along with the Van Ness Liners Van Ness Extra Giant Drawstring Cat Pan Liners 6-pack and Nature's Logic Ponderosa Pine Cat Litter for 5 cats.

I use one litter box and this is the one. The box dimensions are high enough for our largest cat (22 lbs tabby -- just a really big boy and very long) and our littlest girl (8 lbs). I have always removed the plastic swing door as I have found this to be more of an annoyance for the cats and me (the scooper). The enclosed design of this tall box really lends itself to less tracking and more comfort for all different sizes of cats. It isn't so high that a smaller cat (or even a kitten) can't hop into the box.

The Van Ness liners makes for easy litter box changes and I recommend them as an adjunct product. This box is also very durable and will last years with cleaning and care.

Update 5/2013: I have since switched to the Booda Dome Cleanstep Cat Box, Brushed Nickel which I find a better box. A comment was made about my 5-star rating and the fact that I did not like the door (a feature of this box I never really found a use for) meant it should not be a perfect rating. I must agree with this comment. Used these boxes for years but have found the Booda Dome Cleanstep does a better job for all my kitties and for less trailing. Downgraded to 4 stars.

I've used Van Ness Extra Giant litter pans for years (I have four cats) and they are indeed the very best you can buy! I've tried others, but they can't compare. This extra giant keeps the litter from scattering when the cats dig. The best part is you can buy these at Wal-Mart for just under $15.00.

On first use, I found that urine leaked under the back rim of the top. Then I realized that what I thought was the front of the box (bottom half) is really the backside. To match the lid correctly, look for the end of the box-bottom that has a niche jutting outward. That end is the back. If you look at the underside of the lid, you'll see that it is scored to match the niche. When aligned this way, urine sprayed into the back stays inside the container. The other end of the box has a wider lip-- it's the front of the container & makes a wider rim at the front entrance.

I bought this model because one of my female cats decided it's best to stand while urinating. This box keeps everything inside and looks better in an apartment where there's nowhere to put the box but right out in public. FWIW, I took the doors off both of my 2 boxes

This litter box has one especially important (and very rare) feature: the opening is high up. Thus, litter does not easily spill out as the cat exits the box. I only realized how exceptional this feature was when, after 10 years of owning a Van Ness extra large box, I bought a new but different type of litter box ("Catit"). This new box received wonderful recommendations on Amazon, and cost over twice what the Van Ness one does, but I hated it. Litter was all over the floor from day 1. Also, it was actually too large--required so much fresh litter to fill it to a sufficient depth, that sifting through all that was a lot of work (an issue not usually considered when buying extremely large boxes). I went back to the Van Ness. Simple but elegant design with its high door and smooth surface. Very large in size (although not as horribly enormous as the one I rejected). Handle makes it easy to lift off top and clean. Fantastic price. Really, the simple but smart one is the best! Don't let the inexpensive price fool you!

This is an awesome litter box. The litter box allows for plenty of room for my big kitty. Does not produce much dust from the litter.

It does it's job if your cat squats to pee. Since the lip does not raise in the back, a "high peeing" kitty can shoot urine into the seam. That urine can get out (trust me it happened and had to replace carpet). Also, the door breaks off, I've had a few of these boxes and every one easily snapped off.

I have the older Van Ness Model CP7 that I purchased locally over 10 years ago - in fact, I bought two of them the summer of 2001 from a local pet store and they were $25 then. One of them is still in use, although missing a handle - who needs a handle anyhow, I don't carry the litter boxes around.

The other one I recently tossed out due to a latch breaking - not a big deal considering these latches held up being unlatched every day, sometimes twice a day for 11 years. I was so happy with my older CP7's that I wanted the same model.

There are a few differences and only time will tell if the new CP7 is built as well as the old. The plastic used for the new seems more bendable, the latches a little more flimsy, but more bendable plastic isn't always a negative. The latches are now on the sides. The finish is more slick on the new CP7 and that makes fresh P-clumps easier to scoop.

One thing I didn't care for on the new one is the swinging door. Sure, it may keep the smell inside the box, but do you really think your cat will enjoy being in there with no fresh air? The door easily snaps off to be tossed in the trash.

I don't understand the complaints other reviewers have about their cats that pee standing up - with the pee getting into the edge of the box where the top meets the bottom. Every enclosed box I've come across has the same edge, and, yes, I have one cat that stands up to pee and it doesn't flow out all over the floor - it's contained in the ledge area of the litter box and so easy to use a wet paper towel to clean it up while scooping. I'd venture a guess if the pee is running out of the lip all over the floor, you aren't cleaning the box often enough.
